Whatever happened to separation of church and state?
Or is that only a thing when it's meant to prevent OTHER religions that are not your own from influencing politics?
Some people mistakenly believe that freedom of religion is used to impose their will and beliefs on all others.

Whatever happened to separation of church and state?
Great question! Wish people would remember the principles upon which this country was founded.

Re: Whatever happened to separation of church and state?
I often wonder how these people would feel if another religion's beliefs were forced upon them and affected the laws of the country.
I don't get it.
Church and State are 2 very different things.

Interestingly enough they seem to always remember the need for the 2nd amendment (well at least some of them accurately do) but they always seem to have trouble remembering the whole sep of church and state thing. Blatant hypocrisy.

If you have access to Newsday.com, go check out the comments section on the article about Hindu and Muslim people asking for school holidays. Be warned, r=it is not pretty!

Whatever happened to separation of church and state?
Even now, the norm is not a complete separation like I think it should be. We are not a religious family so having dd come home from school reciting the pledge of allegiance referencing God does bother me.

And I am not even saying that to be ass - their beliefs are small government, pro-life, anti-regulation, low taxation, right to bear arms, religious doctrine...they don't have a platform based on policy or action or what is best for the entire American population. They think of what is best for them, everyone else be damned.

I am very much for separation so much that i am not 100 % sure public schools should have off for religious holidays.
But what about when you see extreme cases like parents not seeking medical care for child because it goes against their relgion? Or lpolygyny as a religious belief (why is it illegal here? Is it because out founding "fathers" were of christian faith)?

Eh I kind of look at polygamy like... consenting adults- you want 5 wives- go ahead. I couldn't care less what other people do in their relationships. Have at it.

i see what you're saying about the holidays. i just wouldn't want my kid penalized for taking off for Yom Kippur. It should be a one off, but thats hard to manage.
and yeah...i couldn't care how many wives someone has. they're stupid enough to do it then more power to them lol

Re: Whatever happened to separation of church and state?
This is not a new issue.
The public school example is a great one. If church & state were completely separate, schools should close for religious holidays.
When's the last time you saw your mail carrier on Christmas Day?
So pack those lunches and backpacks on Christmas, or whichever holiday, if this is how you really feel.
We want things to be black & white, except when we want them grey.
Disclaimer: I am not even the slightest bit Republican.

The school thing could be left to a more localized policy. For example Syosset schools will get off for Diwali and NYC schools for Eid. But thats just to be fair obviously no separation

I dont' even read those comments any more because it's wretched. People are so disgusting. And we wonder why there is such an issue with bullying, mean girls, etc. If this is what is raising children, what can you expect from our society. I personally think comments should be disabled on news stories. It only leads to hurtful, evil things being said.

Whatever happened to separation of church and state?
Aside from Donald's myriad issues another big reason not to vote for him is because his running mate wants to legislate completely based on his faith. His Homophobia is truly terrifying and I cannot understand how anyone can be ok with this person being a heartbeat away from the presidency.
I understand why people are pro life, I don't agree but I understand. I do not understand how anyone could be opposed to marriage equality.

Re: Whatever happened to separation of church and state?
I always say this. We are not a christian nation, we have separation of church and state and should not legislate our religious beliefs and impose them on others. What if I was Jewish and wanted to make a national ban on pork products? It's one thing for me not to eat pork (and I am not forced to) but I shouldn't be able to unilaterally deny others that ability because of my religion. And that's just something silly like a food -- when it's applied to more fundamental things like marriage, etc it's even more abhorrent. You should not impose your religious beliefs on others period.

Good point. I think some people interpret upholding the constitution as one that was based on what the people of that time wanted (white christian male).
