What is the gifted and talented program like in your district?

I'm just curious about the type of gifted and talented program your district has. Growing up, I don't think my school had a gifted and talented program so I wasn't sure exactly how it's administered and how different it is across schools.

We're in CT. Our district tests certain students in math at the end of second grade and also evaluates their work. They pick kids (approximately 7%) at the beginning of third grade to participate in the program based on the test and assessments of their work, but it's just math enrichment at that point. Kids are pulled out twice per week for the math enrichment and they're expected to make up any missed work. Kids are tested each year (participation is 3rd through 6th grade plus they may have different programs for older kids). I think there may eventually be a science component as well. I don't think there are any other gifted and talented programs in the district.

Does this sound on par with what other districts do? DS loves math so I'm glad he'll be getting extra enrichment, but I had no idea whether other programs focus on different subjects or skill sets.

Unfortunately, our district in Western Suffolk offers absolutely nothing for the gifted. It stinks. Different states can have different laws and related services.

We have a G&T program for 4 - 6 graders. They are in a self contained class and do a whole slew of advanced academics and enrichment projects. It is very hard to get into too, I want to say 20 kids per grade (that's out of about 350 students).

The program you described is run the same way here at our school in NJ. In addition to that, starting in kindergarten they will test kids for reading. They differentiate reading groups. In first grade they differentiate writing groups. In first grade they also start to differentiate spelling words. So the kids are tested weekly on a different level of words based on their abilities. Some kids will have much much harder word lists than other kids. Writing assignments are grouped according to ability. In addition, our school has small group math. So they have a main teacher, and then a second teacher who will come into the classroom to reinforce math concepts with the class. They also do this for reading as well. The only standard curriculum is science, social studies, and foreign language. This is a public school in NJ.

Thanks. Our school also evaluates reading abilities in K and pulls kids out for small groups with a reading teacher. The kids are also put into different math groups in K or 1st and given different work based on abilities.

Every school and every class should be doing that. They place in small groups by their abilities especially for reading It really has nothing to do with G&T. They do that in special ed classes as well.

Re: What is the gifted and talented program like in your district?

There is a difference between enrichment, acceleration, differentiation vs. true gifted and talented program. Most of what is being described above falls into the first (which is still great) but not the second. It's sad that these days not a lot of schools have a true g+t program. Our school does differentiate and also offers subject area enrichment and acceleration in the older elementary grades and above. It does start later - but when it does start it's the best around. However, this is NOT to be confused with a g+t program which our school district no longer has.

the school district we moved from did not do it, so I don't think every district does it based on past experience.

Re: What is the gifted and talented program like in your district?

G & T program meets once every other week for a full day at our school. It used to meet once a week but I think it became a funding issue and the teacher now travels between more schools. My son is in the program. Even though the kids have to make up their regular class work, I wish it met more often. I'm very impressed with the curriculum and the educational trips they take.

Re: What is the gifted and talented program like in your district?

We have an Advanced Learners Program in our district. It is a class of about 20-25 that stay together 4th-6th grades which basically covers the curriculum at an accelerated pace leaving extra times for STEM and other enrichment programs. They have some changes to the normal grade work as well to allow the work and class to be more advanced. In third grade certain children are selected to test for the program. The children tested are suppose to be based on high Inview assessment/IQ scores as well as teacher recommendation. The testing process is an IQ test given by the school psychologist (in person/oral).
