Anyone cancelling plans to Orlando or anywhere in FL due to zika?

We were planning a trip to Orlando in either October or November. Our school district has 2 random long weekends then where crowds should be low.

I would be about 6m pregnant then. Even before Zika in Miami, DH was most likely going to take our 5yo and 7yo boys alone or with ILs since I have really bad morning sickness.

Would you still let DH go with ILs?

DH and BIL already took days off from work. I was literally about to book everything when the Zika in Miami news broke.

DH thinks it should be fine.

I wouldn't go during my pregnancy & I wouldn't let DH go either. If he is bitten by a mosquito carrying zika, he can transmit it to you. Can you hold off until the baby is born?

I agree with this. It's not worth the risk.

I would definitely not go if pregnant. Not worth that risk. I just had a conversation about Zika with our ped. They aren't completely sure of the consequences of being bitten as a child. Child can get very sick, but it is unknown what possible long term effects might happen, not enough studies. This came from a ped with infectious disease training from Yale. She would not take her young child who is around 3-4 right now. She said it was a judgement call based on your comfort level but to take all mosquito precautions.

I think most of the panic over Zika is overblown, but I would NEVER EVER go anywhere with a high risk while pregnant. Never in a million years.

We are going soon but not pregnant. Are you already expecting? If so, I would cancel. we are bringing our 4 month old, so I'm usually not a worry wart. I don't think your DH should go , either. This really sucks!

Since you are pregnant, I would cancel! I wouldn't feel comfortable with him going alone with the kids, because god forbid he gets it, then you end up with it from him.

DH and I literally had this conversation last night. We are booked for Disney the first week of December. We are going to start trying for #3 soon. DH is pretty laid back about the whole thing but I think it's terrifying if pregnant. I will be seriously devastated if we have to cancel. I'm so excited to take 3 yo DD.

Had this thought/discussion about Aruba (which BTW, has tons of mosquitos that found me).
I didn't get Zika...
We have a trip booked in Nov to Disney/FLL which will have Zika.
We use DEET. I'm fine with spraying the kids down. We treat our lawns at home (don't even know with which chemical).
I would not travel if pregnant... To me, that is too scary.
Hold off another year... You've gone to Disney before, right?

I am curious. I know they say some have no symptoms. So if you were bitten were you tested or are you just assuming no symptoms equals no virus? Because one concern is you can be asymptomatic but still have it.

How did you deal with the issues of using sunscreen with bug spray?

Yes, we've been to Disney several times.

I think DH is going to take the boys to San Diego with BIL. They will probably go to Legoland and the San Diego Zoo. It can be a fun boy trip.

I am going to stay home, not due to zika but I don't feel up for travel.

I have heard the same thing and my husband is also in the medical profession and agrees that there is too much unknown about zica and children (and even zica and adults). I would consider going during colder weather months (Dec-Feb?) maybe as long as you are comfortable spraying the kids down with bug spray

Is it confirmed that it's as far as Orlando yet?
I only heard of it in Miami so far

Not in Orlando yet but just being cautious. DH does not want to risk our kids. He believes that there is not enough research on the effects on brain development in children. If it causes brain damage to unborn babies and adult mice, it could impact child brain development.

That being said, DH has a conference in Miami next month and I am 4m pregnant. He said he will stay mostly indoors and use deet religiously.

DH is also a physician and feels the same way. I don't think we will be going to Florida or the Caribbean for a while.

I believe it was confirmed in a case in Pinellas County today, which is Tampa/Clearwater area. We are cancelling our fall trip to my parent's condo in Clearwater due to this new development.

Same here! Stinks though.... My DH also thinks it will be around for awhile since mosquitos in tropical areas won't die off (weather not cold enough)

Re: Anyone cancelling plans to Orlando or anywhere in FL due to zika?

I wouldn't go.... We are going on a vacation in October and while we considered going to the islands, we are not because it's not worth the risk. Even if the chance of a problem were slim, I'd get bit by a mosquito and freak out. That alone would get in the way of my enjoyment and then what's the point?
