Colorectal Cancer

I have a few questions about this, since I have, thankfully, had very little experience with cancer in my family.

My mom was diagnosed with colorectal cancer today. We don't know the stage, but they found out about it during a colonoscopy on Monday. The next day she did a CT scan and today we found out that it did not spread, thankfully. The biopsy results come in next week, I believe.

Anyway, my mom was a wreck about waiting for the results and when I spoke to her after her doctor's appointment she sounded "happy" that it did not spread and she really liked the doctor, etc. She said they are doing surgery to remove part of her intestines and a nearby lymph node in 2 weeks. She also mentioned that she may not even need chemo.

I've made the mistake of googling this evening and I can't help but worry now. She is almost 70 and I'm just worried.

I've read it's one of the "better" cancers to get. Has anyone had experience with this?

Thanks!

This sounds very similar to the form of colon cancer my dad had. He was 65, had a portion of his intestines removed. No chemo. Knock on wood, everything has been fine since then and it's been almost 16 years! He goes for colonoscopies whenever the dr tells him.

It sounds like your mom caught it very early, which is great. I'm not going to tell you not to worry because of course you will. But I hope I brought you some comfort with my dad's story, which really does sound like what your mom is dealing with.

My grandmother had it in her 60s. She had to have part of her intestines removed and eventually had to use a colostomy bag ( not everyone does ). They gave her the option of having chemo just as a precaution which she did not take. She did have to go for routine colonoscopies, but that's a small price to pay. She lived until she was 91! My thoughts and prayers are with your mother.

Re: Colorectal Cancer

My dad was diagnosed at the end of last year. It was a cancerous polyp that was removed with surgery as well as some of the of the surrounding tissue and lymph nodes. He did not require chemo or radiation. He has checks every 6 months. He is 61.

My mother had colon cancer in her 40s, she had to have a colonoscopy bag for a little over a year. She did have chemo but has now been cancer free for 20+ years. Feel free to PM with any questions

Re: Colorectal Cancer

My Mom was diagnosed 3 yrs ago. She had surgery to remove the small tumor and then chemo/radiation.

One doctor told her the "protocol" was to remove the intestines and get a colosotomy bag" She went and found a dr that did not agree with that and gave her the treatment plan of surgery/chemo.

She is doing well and is cancer free!! She is also 73 yrs old.

Thank you everyone! These stories help a lot with worrying. I guess we will know more after the surgery.

My mom was diagnosed last year around this time. Had the colon resection surgery and did chemo which she just finished. The chemo did not make her lose her hair and had little side effects except some nausea, minor neuropathy which went away and these symptoms for her only lasted a few days each chemo session which was every other week. So far she's looking good from blood tests and will repeat the scans in a few months. Cancer is such a terrible thing but I hope things go well with your mom too.
