Jobs that don't require a degree
DH has been in construction/carpentry most of his life. He is very good at it. Has a great eye, and basically knows how to do all aspects of the job well. He never got a college degree. He has been talking about it for years (I even posted about it a few years back I believe) but I think he's really at the point where he wants out. It has taken a toll on his body (bad knee, bad back etc.) He would be fine with taking classes to get a certification or something that is less taxing on him but not sure which direction to go. he doesn't want to manage other people either. We were thinking maybe OSHA or something like that. Any ideas of something that he could look into for a decent salary that fits the bill here? Thanks for any advice.

Maybe home inspector or property management?
DH is a hands on contractor and he has considered both of the above options to get him away from the tools. The problem is that each year he gets busier and busier so he keeps saying next year!

Jobs that don't require a degree
In order to stay in construction but have a less physical job his options are limited to positions like project manager which are all about managing people- usually the project manager will hold the OSHA certifications-He can looking site safety licensing or inspector positions- it is probably best to have him consider the type of job he would like to do before investing in specific licenses and certifications--indeed has a bunch of positions listed with the qualifications required: http://www.indeed.com/m/jobs?q=Osha&l=New+York+State
Has he considered any Union positions? Often the union will pay for schooling and help with job placement.

What about getting the license and then becoming a school bus driver?

My friend works in insurance as an inspector and estimator for home owner claims. He too used to work in construction and does not have a degree.

This is what I was going to suggest. Different companies have different requirements (whether or not you need a degree) but he should definitely look into it.

Re: Jobs that don't require a degree
If he has the prerequisites to become a NYC DOB licensed Site Safety Manager that might be a great choice.
There is a shortage of licensed people and they make $150k+ and not very physical.
He would have to take a 40 hour SSM class, OSHA class, pay for application fee, take an exam (another fee) and pass a background check.
That being said, there are legal ramifications to be a licensed person so you have to take your job seriously and do your job or you could go to jail if something happens on the project.
