Ikea Recalls 29 Million Dressers and Chests After 6 Children Crushed to Death

At least six children have been crushed to death by toppling Ikea chests, prompting the voluntary recall of about 29 million chests and dressers sold by the popular retailer, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says.

Ikea and the CPSC tell ABC that at least 36 children have been injured by Ikea chests and dressers, which are prone to tip over when they aren’t anchored to the wall. The deaths -- all children under the age of 4 -- date back to 1989 and are as recent as this February, the CPSC said.

The company is offering a refund or repair kit for affected dressers, including the MALM and other styles, the CPSC said. Further details were not immediately available. Furniture manufactured between 2002 and 2016 will entitle customers to a full refund; consumers can receive a partial store credit for items manufactured before 2002.

Upon request, the company will send a crew to install the wall anchor for customers who don’t want to do it themselves, the CPSC said. In the meantime, the CPSC is encouraging consumers to store the dresser where children won’t have access to it. At least four of the deaths were the result of unanchored chests.

Jaquelyn Collas, of Pennsylvania, found her 2-year-old son pinned between his bed and an Ikea MALM dresser in February 2014, she told ABC News today.

“I couldn't tell if there was a heartbeat, you know I was so afraid,” she recalled.

Despite her attempt at CPR, the toddler was pronounced dead a few hours later, she said.

Collas is suing Ikea, claiming the company failed to warn consumers that the “front-heavy” dressers were potentially dangerous, according to the amended complaint, filed in May 2015.

"I didn't know to anchor my furniture and, in my mind, I feel that we really shouldn't have to,” Collas told ABC News. “Get rid of it, it’s dangerous, it’s a really dangerous product.”

In its answer to the suit, Ikea denied any allegations of manufacturing defect or inadequate warning.

"Defendants expressly deny any alleged negligence and carelessness, failure with regard to inadequate warnings or instructions, and the allegation that the dresser was improperly designed, improperly manufactured, defective, unreasonably dangerous or unsafe."

In a statement regarding the voluntary recall, Ikea said that "a child in the US dies every two weeks from furniture, appliances, or TVs tipping over," stressing that it instituted a repair kit program last year "to communicate the importance of wall attachment, which resulted in the distribution of 300,000 kits to consumers who had not used their original hardware."

"Since then, we have been in close contact with the CPSC to evaluate the success of the repair program and the impact it is having on consumers’ actions. We are announcing this recall today given the recent tragic death of a third child," the statement said, referring to the number of children killed by MALM dressers. Three other children have been killed by other-style IKEA chests.

"It is clear that there are still unsecured products in customers’ homes, and we believe that taking further action is the right thing to do," Ikea continued in the statement. "We will continue to work collaboratively with the CPSC on tip-over prevention, development of the ASTM standard, and innovations that will enhance product safety and further reduce the risk of tip-overs."

Re: Ikea Recalls 29 Million Dressers and Chests After 6 Children Crushed to Death

After reading a story about a little girl being killed by a falling dresser, DH ran out and got anchors for every piece of furniture in the house a few years back.

I think regardless of the brand or type it's a good idea to anchor large pieces to the walls when you have small children

Ugh, so scary

Ikea Recalls 29 Million Dressers and Chests After 6 Children Crushed to Death

When we moved my husband did not anchor the furniture right away and one day we heard a piece fall down. My then 3 year old tied clothing around a knob and pulled it down thinking she was playing with it didn't realize it would fall. For three seconds I thought she was under it and I lost it. I look over and she was crying in the corner because she was scared. We have everything anchored. When you have small children they play and do not think things will fall down but they do. It was the scariest parenting moment I have ever had.

See I think this is a little crazy. Society has become so litigious and take no accountability. Little kids climb. Baby proofing 101, anchor all furniture because they can pull ANYTHING down. My niece pulled a huge TV down on here and was seriously injured. It wasn't even a thought that it was a TV issue but rather a we didn't anchor it down like we should have issue.

Yeah I agree. A tall piece of furniture is top heavy and will fall. Kids like to climb.
I don't see how it's a recall situation.
Then all heavy chests, dressers, and like you said, TVs would have to be recalled.

exactly.
every piece in DS's room is anchored down, as is all of our living room furniture.

i don't see how this is IKEAs fault. This is parental negligence in my opinion.

Agreed- especially since IKEA gave out equipment to anchor all these dressers in recent years. I thought it was common knowledge that once your kids are up and moving you should anchor all furniture.

I agree as well. We have our ikea bookshelf anchored but, my DH didn't anchor our Westwood dresser and my son managed to climb up and tip it (at 5 years old...) trying to get his socks out. Luckily he is fine but, it's not the manufacturers fault - it is ours.

I mean. I don't even have kids but I still have my TV anchored because my cats are effing nuts and I feel like they could probably push it over.

I thought it was just common sense to anchor shit once your kid is up and about?

Yup. We are a horrifically irresponsible society, always blaming someone for our troubles.

When we moved into our house, my DH didn't think anchoring our furniture was a big deal but I harassed him until it was done. My kids have tried to climb my book shelf, just as I always feared they would - even before they started to walk.

Re: Ikea Recalls 29 Million Dressers and Chests After 6 Children Crushed to Death

I feel terrible she lost her child but this lady sounds like a real piece of work. She doesn't feel she should have to anchor the furniture, it's dangerous and just shouldn't be sold. Is she kidding? Then they should just stop selling just about everything, tvs, tv stands, dressers, mirrors, armoires, lamps, chests, bookshelves for the books she obviously doesn't read. Stores should just sell furniture made out of cardboard, pillows, and bubble wrap. Of course she's suing ikea. It was ikea's job to keep an eye on her kids. Moron.

I agree with everyone.
And they eventually included the anchor kits yet people still don't use them.

29 million sold and 6 deaths. I'm not make light of 6 babies losing their lives, but I do not see how this is Ikeas fault.
I think it's very generous of them to offer refunds .

I don't have kids and I anchored my bookshelves in the great room.

W have kids come over a few times a year and I know if they grab the shelves they could be killed.

When I was there they make a big point of handing me anchors at the register. Even though there was one in the box. And they had it posted all over the store. This was in the past few weeks.
