Are we thinking about zika here at all?
I know they sprayed or did something in the city to help prevent the virus spreading, but I'm not sure about Long Island. Is anyone nervous about the summer? Has anyone spoken to their ob about it yet? And follow up - is bug spray with DEET safe for us to use?

Are we thinking about zika here at all?
I'm not pregnant, but I personally would be concerned. On GMA they were talking about it, as always, and they said DEET is the best protection and you don't have to spray yourself. You can spray your clothes.
It is concerning bc there are people locally who have it and if they get bit by a mosquito and then the same mosquito bites someone else it could spread. And the mosquitos that can carry zika will be in NY soon with the summer coming.

Cutter backwoods spray has 25% DEET and so does OFF Deep Woods.

I'm starting to get concerned. We spend a lot of time outside by the fire pit at night in the summers and we always get bit up..no matter how much I cover up. I too was wondering what's safe for us to use as far as bug spray.

I heard on the news yesterday that they anticipate the bugs being here in the next month or so  I don't really know HOW they can predict that.
I have to say I'm surprised its not already...think about planes loading up cargo in DR...how have a few of those mosquitos not boarded a plane?
I went to the doctor yesterday and had asked about going to Florida, she had concerns about Zika and told me to keep an eye on the CDC website. So far, there are a bunch of cases in the U.S. but are all travel related. No one has received it here.
I'm seriously  that it doesnt make it here

Yes, I am. I'm very worried. I asked my doctor and he poo poo'ed it, saying zika is not here. It's supposed to be here soon. We are having our property sprayed for mosquitos and setting up a bug zapper. I'm also researching which are safe big sprays.

I'm in the City and there are mosquitoes here already.. DD got bit twice. I have a Citronella and lemongrass scented candles placed all over, and seems to be working. I also spray a diluted Eucalyptus and lavender oil in our hallway, and balcony.

Yes! My friend lost her baby at 19 weeks due to Zika, so I'm super worried about it. My OB said to use DEET. So I just got Repel 100 Insect Repellent, which has something like 98% DEET in it and is EPA-registered.

We don’t know how the virus will affect her or her pregnancy.
We don’t know how likely it is that Zika will pass to her fetus.
We don’t know if the fetus is infected, if the fetus will develop birth defects.
We don’t know when in pregnancy the infection might cause harm to the fetus.
We don’t know whether her baby will have birth defects.
We don’t know if sexual transmission of Zika virus poses a different risk of birth defects than mosquito-borne transmission.
it looks like if contracted, it may/may not affect the baby at any point in the pregnancy

I bought this spray, the smell is strong like a citronella candle...I will be indoors as much as possible which sucks.

On Wednesday, researchers put the risk at between 1 percent and 13 percent when the infection occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy. A previous study, based on data from a Zika epidemic in French Polynesia in 2013 and 2014, concluded that 1 percent of infected pregnant women carried a fetus that developed an abnormally small head, a condition known as microcephaly.
Although those figures may seem low, researchers in both cases were examining only the risk of microcephaly. Zika virus has been tied to a host of birth defects; researchers following the pregnancies of infected women in Rio de Janeiro found that 29 percent had babies with brain-related birth defects, including but not limited to microcephaly.
The authors also tried to make allowances for the fact that not all reported cases of microcephaly turn out to be verified, and not all cases of the potentially devastating birth defect are caused by Zika infection.
Microcephaly can be caused by a number of factors, including a variety of viral infections and alcohol consumption during pregnancy. In the US, between two and 12 babies per 10,000 are born with the condition.
The CDC group’s work suggested the risk was highest in the first trimester of pregnancy and negligible in the second and third. But Johansson said that doesn’t mean infection later in pregnancy doesn’t carry risks.
“I want to be clear that there is risk [of microcephaly], at least in the second trimester,” he told STAT in an interview.
Dr. Christina Chambers, who was not involved in the work, called it a thoughtful analysis, but said more facts are needed to get to firm answers about Zika’s risks during pregnancy.
“These estimates are based on a number of assumptions that can’t yet be verified,” Chambers, codirector of the Center for Promotion of Maternal Health and Infant Development at the University of California, San Diego, said in an email.
She added: “Clearly infection in any trimester seems to be associated with microcephaly so as they conclude, should be avoided. It might make sense that first trimester carries the greatest risk but [that] remains to be seen as we get more individual level data.”

I am very concerned. I bought skin so soft but I think I'm going to use the hard core stuff. I'm sure the risk of Zika far outweighs the use of deet

Where does your friend live? Where did she visit? And how do they know it was a loss of her baby due to ZIKA? Many prayers for your friend. :(

This one was recommended to me by my OB. Also recommended on Consumer Reports, CDC, etc.
Sawyer Products Premium Insect Repellent with 20% Picaridin. It's on Amazon.
My OB said DEET-based repellent is okay too. She said to make sure to shower it off every night so it doesn't sit on your skin overnight.

Does anyone know if it someone previously gets Zika before being pregnant will it always be in their system? Or does it clear eventually and subsequent pregnancies should be okay? Also, has any ob's checked anyone for the virus?
I was in Florida last month and got bit up. I never got sick and I'm not pregnant but we are trying now and I'm hoping my ob can check for it because I have serious anxiety over this. I'm probably a little bit overreacting though.

My doctor told me not to travel to southern florida -- but also said not to worry bc zika is not here in NY. I am still worried and plan to use deet spray.

She was in Aruba on vacation when she conceived. Came back with a mosquito bite on her stomach that turned into a rash. Doctors gave her a cream or something - never diagnosed it as Zika, nor did they check for it. After she lost the baby, the CDC took tissue, bloodwork, etc to investigate.

They "say" it's out of your system in 2 weeks so to wait a cycle or two before TTC. But they also say not enough research has really been done.
The media is giving out a lot of false information as well. Like waiting two years is for women living in infected areas because there is no way to stop reoccurring incidents. You're best bet is to discuss with your OB before TTC, they'll know best and perhaps they can test for it. From my understanding Florida is still safe (not on CDC do not travel list).
