MSPI +/- Dairy allergy

So my daughter was diagnosed with MSPI @ 6 weeks of age(blood and mucous in stool). She has been breastfed exclusively since birth and I altered my diet to cut out all daily and soy (even soy oil and lecithan because she was super sensitivity). Every once in a while she still gets hives so the GI dr. recommended skin testing her before starting to try to add milk or soy back into her diet. She had skin testing yesterday and came up positive for Casein allergy (dairy). They are now recommending that I don't introduce dairy at all to her unless baked only and want me to get epi-pen. My son had a milk protein intolerance but no allergy and he outgrew his intolerance at 2.5 yrs old.

I am totally freaking out about the Dairy allergy. Has anyone had a child who was not just protein intolerant (GI signs/excema) but actually had an allergy too? They said she will likely still outgrow the allergy at some point but unlike the intolerance where GI signs were the only issue this makes me more scared because of the risk of anaphalaxis. What are your experiences, did they outgrow it? What alternative milk did you wean onto?
I feel lost no one in my family or my husbands have any allergies at all so this is new to us AND to top it off we still have to see if she has outgrown her soy intolerance (who knows about dairy being we can't try to do a dietary test with her at this point)

Just want to say Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon. I'm dealing with different allergies (peanuts and other nuts) and it's really scary and overwhelming at first. But you'll make it work!

MSPI +/- Dairy allergy

Dd1 had a very mild dairy allergy, not casein just whey. She had no issues with nursing but got hives when she tried milk and cheese around a year. We continued to give it to her in cooked foods and she did outgrow the allergy right around age 3. Hopefully it's temporary for your lo but in the meantime I'm sure it's scary.

Thanks for the response. Yeah apparently her "dairy" was negative as was "whey" but Casein was a mild positive reaction. They told me I could try cooked dairy BUT that's assuming she outgrew the intolerance part of it as well (my son took till 2.5 to do that). I feel like we are doubly screwed now and its so frustrating.

My son had a severe MP and soy allergy. He was on Elecare as nothing else worked. I tried everything and 5 different formulas.. He did outgrow the milk allergy by 15 months. However he still has the soy allergy. He is 6.5 years old now.

My daughter was just intolerant but she only drank Almond Milk. Could never tolerate reg milk. We also give her coconut milk based ice cream.
My daughter cannot digest the casein.

ETA: They have coconut based yogurts and cheeses as well.

Re: MSPI +/- Dairy allergy

So for those of you whose children had an allergy (for ex to dairy or soy) as opposed to an intolerance to dairy/soy(GI issues) were they skin tested and had a positive reaction on the skin test?

DS had a dairy allergy. He tested positive on the skin test at a year old. He could tolerate cooked dairy. He outgrew it at 3 years old.

We had a blood test which ended up being mostly useless. She had a very minor reaction response to boiled milk. There was no uncooked milk on the test which is what she had obvious reactions too. They did make sure to test for almonds, coconut, rice, soy so we knew what alternative milks we could offer.

My son is tested every year and the skin test is still positive for soy.... He has a true soy allergy. Can only have soy oil and soy lecithin

DD had a severe milk protein allergy. We had to avoid milk, Casein, and whey. She outgrew it around a year old. She was on Rx formula. Though I never breastfed the doctor said I'd likely wouldn't be able to anyways given the level of restriction.

My daughter is two years old and allergic to milk, egg whites, egg yolks, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, and sesame. I EBF her for 14 months so I cut all of that out my diet. After 14 months, I weaned her to coconut and hemp milk, with some soy for protein. She has reactions just from contact. If someone eats something and gives her a kiss, she gets hives. We have an epi pen and I hope we never have to use it--it's so intimidating to see that big thing that I'd have to jab into her tiny thigh. I hope she outgrows them soon but her numbers have gone up, not down. She's a class V for most of them Chat Icon

Just a little tip. Taking a prebiotic while you breastfeed is huge for kids with allergies and milk pro allergies. It helps repair damage done to the gut from the allergy and strengthens the gut mucosa.
Just thought to share.

U're doing so good mommy Chat Icon !! Changing ur diet so ur lo can still bfeed is no easy task!!!

DS1 had a dairy intolerance (mucuous in his stools and bits of blood). He was formula fed (Alimentum Similc) and he outgrew the intolerance approx by 8 months.

DS2 also has a dairy intolerance with the same symptoms as DS1. He's bfed though. Once we found out about the intolerance (at around 6 weeks or so), I had to cut dairy completely, even the hidden ones! I tried to reintroduced dairy at around 7 months in biscuits form, but he had a little bit of mucuous in a couple of diapers so I stopped, I'll reintroduce again at 9 months and see how he does.

I've heard skin test in infants are not really accurate and pediatricians isually wait til babies are older to do them.

I've heard the same thing!!! I'll def do this for baby#3!

I also read an article that giving probiotics to those babies with dairy issues can be very beneficial thanks to those cool, friendly bacteria Click Me

Also, while there isn't scientific research backing this up, I've heard a mom who bfeeds should also take probiotics since it might pass through bmilk and the baby can benefit from it.
