Re: SouthWest

Do the Early bird check in! It's not that expensive, and WELL worth it.
They automatically check you in 12 hours before everyone else can check in- so you are pretty much guaranteed an "A" boarding pass.
We did it to go to Florida last year and we had no issue getting 3 seats together.
Well worth it.

Re: SouthWest

If your kids are under 5 they have family pre-boarding. We never had any issues getting seats together.

I would just make sure you check in exactly 24 hours before. Right on the dot, start clicking that button a couple minutes early. I personally wouldn't pay the extra for each person to get the early bird check in. You aren't always guaranteed an A for that anyway depending on how many are doing it. Family boarding is after A, so if you check in and get B, or even C (which is unlikely if you do it on the dot), then just family board.

Re: SouthWest

I haven't been on a plane in way too long . So I do check in online 24 before ( exactly ) then they will tell me online what check in order my family and I will be allowed to board the plane ? Starting with A .... And so on ?

Thank you

Memories of a Nightmare of a trip!
When DS was about 7 he ended up sitting a few rows away from me. No one would switch seats. Another family had the same issue but with a few kids and refused to sit down until people switched seats. It was a packed flight during Feb break. Kids were upset, parents were upset total mess for all.
If your going during a high travel time I would avoid it.

Nope. There is no rhyme or reason and I have checked in exactly to the second and have gotten B's and C's.
I think your best bet would be to see if you can do family boarding if they allow.

If I remember correctly Southwest boards as follows:
Wheelchair assisted
Families with children under 5 (1parent/adult per child)
Active duty personnel
A boarding (which you pay extra per person for)
B boarding
C boarding

Depending on the flight it can be half full by the time they get to A boarding.

That is why i FLUCKING HATEEEEE Southwest.
What would it cost them to label the seats and have assigned seats like every other freaking airline?
Nothing.
It makes no sense- how is it a "cost saving" measure?
It reminds me of trying to board the LIRR and fighting for a seat. Nightmare.
Sadly it's a necessary evil to fly out of Islip.
If not for that i would NEVER fly them

Also if you pay for 'Business class" you board first.
I have gotten A before without paying... I checked in exactly 24 hours before and got it. But it really depends on the flight

It's actually

Preboard (anyone with a disability and that is holding a preboard slip, including wheelchairs)

A (you don't pay extra for A, it's luck of the draw unless you pay for the first 1-10 spots or whatever it is)

Family Board

B

C

We fly Southwest a lot. Family board used to be before A YEARS ago. That has changed though. Also, you can't family board with a whole extended family (i.e. grandparents, etc.)

Also to add, our last trip to Puerto Rico out of ISP over Easter weekend...the flight was oversold by 6 seats. They offered FOUR times your fare price to give up your seat. NO ONE wanted to. So the last 6 people in C were bumped to another flight. I've never seen that happen, but I would definitely check in ON THE DOT and your chances of getting C are pretty nil.

After flying Delta, which has numbered seats, I can say that Southwest is doing something right. Their planes board MUCH quicker for some reason. On my last trip on Delta last month, it was over 45 minutes to board the plane for EACH leg. It was ridiculous!

Yes A's board before the families with young children. And that line gets crazy. I alwasy pay for the early bird but I hate flying SW bc it just feels so stressful - waiting in line, trying to get seats together. Then there is alwasy the people that one person pays for the early bird and then gets on to "save" 8 seats.

I thought the entire party had to pay for early bird if you booked under one reservation number?

I have seen people do the family boarding, then save seats for their entire extended family though!

I hate Delta as well- for other reasons- but all i care about is I want to know WHERE my seat is and that if i want to sit with my party, I can.
I'd be willing for the plane to take longer to board than to deal with this cattle call boarding bullshitt

One of the many reasons I won't fly Southwest...I'd rather drive to JFK or LGA to avoid them...and I live 20 minutes east of Islip. Every flight I've ever taken I have had to worry about whether or not my family can be together.
