What would you do? Any HR peeps in the house?

So I am moving to FL at the end of June Chat Icon My DH has a fantastic job opportunity and we are in the process of selling our house and getting our ducks in a row to go.

I was going to give my job 2 weeks notice and leave it at that, but now things are changing...

I found out on monday my boss is leaving and there is a lot of movement in my department. The person replacing him is my neighbor 3 doors down from me that I don't really like to begin with! Also, we are in review time now and we are talking about our yearly goals, etc....it all seems disingenuous of me to sit through these meetings talking about the future of my job and train my new boss all with this in mind.

Do I tell my current boss now and give 12 weeks notice? Or suck it up and stick it out and just give the 2 weeks notice?

If you give more than 2 weeks notice, do you run the risk of them replacing you sooner and then being out of a job?

If you know you are leaving, with no chance that the move will fall through (and you'd therefore want to stay at your job), I'd definitely give longer than 2 weeks notice. You HAVE to give 2 weeks notice, but it's nicer if you give more. They may even have your interview your replacement.

I don't know that I would tell them 12 weeks in advance.. like the PP said I would be afraid of them replacing me and being stuck with no job...

Agreed, that is the risk. It would be great if I could work out a severance package and train the new person that they would hire.

Sometimes being upfront and honest bites you in the azz!

I'm in finance. I have no problem with giving 4 weeks, I just feel a little uncomfortable sitting here talking about my future role with a new boss only to be leaving in 3 months.

Re: What would you do? Any HR peeps in the house?

I would probably give more notice bc I'm sure it would be hard for me to keep quiet about moving.. but I've always had really good relationships with people at work. It would stress me out about the whole replacing you before you leave but I'm an optimist. LOL.

Unless your contract specifically states, i believe NY is an at-will state, meaning you can walk out without any notice.
i'd give what you feel comfortable with.
I would NOT give 12 weeks for fear of getting fired earlier.

This. Higher level position this is standard anyway. 2 weeks is too little in your case. With 4 weeks you can relax and they can help you enjoy your soon to be move!

Does the new boss from three doors away know that you're moving? Would he have seen the sign on the house?

I would give 4 weeks and leave it at that.

He knows I'm moving and has asked me where. I blew it off and said we are still looking. the tough part is that my other neighbor knows and i'm worried he's going to find out BEFORE i give any notice at all.

Just give 2 weeks. They can tell you to go home the day you give notice, can you go 3 months without pay?

Eta I see your in finance. Absolutely do not give notice early , and only 2 weeks. I've watched people give notice and be walked out the door by security.

Re: What would you do? Any HR peeps in the house?

If you don't need the $$$$ now or the insurance, give notice and if they terminate you earlier, then you have that much more time to get your life together before the big move.

When I moved back to NY after living in FL for 5 years, I gave my principal notice (granted, different industry) so that I wouldn't have to worry about it slipping, having to pack my things quickly, etc. It was easier to let everyone know and gave us time to have get togethers and such before the big move.

If you need the $$$/benefits, wait till 4 weeks - but otherwise, why not give it earlier. It's not like you're leaving for a new position in NY -- you are relocating for your husband...I'm sure they'd understand & be supportive, especially with all of the change.

If you give written notice with a date in which you plan to leave they cant get rid of you sooner without terminating you. They will probably appreciate the notice.
