Complaint about a medical office

Not to get in to too many details, I am having a big issue with a medical office. I have raised concerns about a procedure I was given, and now I'm being billed twice and it is not right. I believe I have very valid legs to stand on with this. I have tried unsuccessfully twice now to deal directly with the office, but have gotten absolutely no where, and in addition, have been treated extremely poor. I am very upset, as I have been a patient of this office for 20 years and actually truly like my doctor, I just can't get past, a. the issues I have with this procedure, and b. how poorly I am being treated as I try and rectify this.

What other options do I have? Like can I file a claim with the better business bureau??? Or should I just write this off and have to find another doctor (which I am going to do anyway). Thanks!

without more detail its hard to give you direction. You can call your insurance company and file a complaint I did with a Dr who runs 3 hrs. behind and books 2-4 pts for the same time slot. She was over booking the allowed amount ( based on insurance policies) I called my insurance company when I noticed another office billed for x-rays and I never took the x-rays, with that one they suggested I speak to the office first, so they can correct otherwise it would have been a fraud case. I did, the billing dept billed by mistake.

did you speak to the Dr since you have been his/her pt for 20 years.

Thanks for the response...I didn't speak to the doctor himself...to make matters worse (this is a big practice), I saw another doctor there this one time and she ordered the procedure. Do you think I should talk to one of them? Either my current doctor or the one that actually ordered the procedure?

without knowing details, yes you should speak to your regular Dr and the office manager. If this practice is related to NSLIJ you can speak to someone from the medical directors office, I have.

If you tried speaking to someone at the management level without success and you can reach out to the NYS Office of Professions. They handle enforecement and discipline.
Good luck!

Is there a way to reach out to the doctor him/her self? Office staff is not always representative of the doctor. Some are great, others not so much. Before a complain is made, especially to the Office of Professional Discipline, I would reach out to the doctor (since you've said you like him/her). Can you leave an urgent message to call you back?

Re: Complaint about a medical office

DH's hospital has patient advocates where you can file a formal complaint. Is the medical office associated with a hospital? You may want to discuss with the hospital.

I can't speak for the procedure but I can speak for billing. DH sees and operates on many pts. It is hard enough to get through his notes. Billing is outsourced at his office. I know the billing company kicks back insurance codes all the time. DH will then fill out codes again. If you are double billed, I am sure you can get that fixed. It was probably not done deliberately.

Was it actually the same invoice twice or are the invoices different?

Thanks everyone! It was a sonogram...when they made the appt., she told me it was abdominal and come with a full bladder. When I got there (bursting at the seams LOL), the sonographer told me, no it was a vaginal one and to empty my bladder. As she was doing it, she realized, 'Wait, I can't see what I'm looking for and then had me do an abdominal." When I questioned the office, they are now claiming both sono's were ordered?????? If both were ordered, why wouldn't she have done the abdominal first while my bladder was full and then the other one. When I did ask this, all they could say to me was, "This is a seasoned sonographer and she knows what she's doing." They were not even willing to listen to my concerns.

UUGGGHHHHHH, it's just so frustrating! It's not so much the money of having to pay for 2 sonograms, it's more the principle of what has been going on behind the scenes, y'know.

What did the script they gave you say? It would indicate which one. If they did 2 separate procedures they did not double bill you.

Thanks!!

Without the details I can only venture to guess as to why you might think you are being double billed. Yours insurance company would have most certainly caught it and denied all charges were that actually the case. This is what I have done for my entire career, so if I can assist in any way I will. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss further. There are so many intricacies when it comes to medical billing, it is extremely confusing to anyone who hasn't been doing this for years (even confusing to those of us who have been at times).

Sorry! I read the rest of the thread. I would have to agree with this... Get copies of your office visit note for the visit where the sono was ordered as well as a copy of the original script for the sono and that will tell you more. There are numerous situations where both Transvag and abdominal sonos are warranted.

I'm also curious who you have spoken to thus far. You say it's a large practice and to be honest someone in the billing department can only go by what procedures were performed and the records. If you are questioning what happened in the office, you are better off speaking directly to the office manager at the location you were seen and not the billing department.

I agree, at work the first sono would be the abdominal and if they cannot see what they need they go for the vaginal sono.
