Sweet air for cavities?

DD (4.5yo) has cavities and the pediatric dentist says he wants to give her sweet air. I am not familiar with this and don't like the sound of it. I had tons of cavities as a kid (thinking poor DD inherited by bad teeth) and always just got Novocaine.

Is this a normal practice? I really don't know what to think and want a second opinion before I do anything.

Sweet air for cavities?

My friend's 4 yo DC had it done at That Broadway Smile and was fine. I obviously can't speak to it first hand but it seems like a common practice.

Sweet air for cavities?

Our dentist has laser dentistry for cavities and said they can do without it no problem, no pain but some kids are apprehensive and it makes it easier for them to relax.

Depends on your kid.
Mine (almost 4) is very good, but still freaked out when having a procedure under local (stitches on face). I had to hold her down. It didn't hurt, but she was terrified when they started & it was hard to keep her still. She would not be able to tolerate cavity filling.

Sweet air for cavities?

My son had it 2x. There's NO WAY he'd be able to not have it. It just helped him relax enough to not flip out when they started work in his mouth. They Apap use novicaine on just the tooth they're working on (Kidd smiles in merrick )

For us, it's not covered by insurance, but it's well worth the $ IMO

I had a bunch of cavities growing up and always got sweet air. I would have been a nightmare without it. Totally normal.

Re: Sweet air for cavities?

My 3 year old just had a cavity filled with Sweet air. I called the Ped to double check it was ok because I was feeling uneasy about it. Ped said its very safe. My dd sat on my lap while she had it filled and was very relaxed. As soon as the mask was off she was back to her normal self. No needles and no numb feeling which was really nice.

My daughter had cavities filled when she was 4 with sweet air. She is a terrible patient and they would never have been able to do it without it! She hated novocaine, and sweet air was enough to get it done easily.

Re: Sweet air for cavities?

my dd has groovy teeth and has about 5 filling. Each time the dentist recommends the air but I always tell them no. There has never been a problem with her not getting it.

eta-how bad is the cavity?

DS (at age 6) had a cavity filled without it and DD (at age 5) had one filled with it. LIGHT YEARS difference. DD didn't cry one bit and was so calm but not loopy at all. I will never make them get a filling without sweet air again.

My kids are older now, but have had quite a few cavities filled between the two of them. We've never used sweet air. I guess it depends on your kids. While mine were apprehensive, they always did well without it.
