Sorry to rehash- Developmental Ped recommendation

DS's school wants him to see a developmental ped. We're in South Shore Western Suffolk. Marci Silverman is closest but I've been reading mixed reviews. Dr. Patricia Quinn at Cody is a neurologist, correct? The other one on my list is Dr. Elice. I'm willing to travel. Thank you!

Dr Elice is not a developmental ped. He is an integrative ped who is MAPS trained ( it's essentially Medical Academy for Ped Special Needs). I would recommend him but I am not sure what exactly you would be going to the doctor for ?

His school wants him to see a developmental ped or a pediatric neurologist for a diagnosis. He is only diagnosed with a speech delay at this point.

I really don't recommend Silverman. I thought she was terribly unorganized, made a huge mistake with my child's medication, and refused to write up a report after diagnosing my son with PDD-NOS. I had to call a million times to beg for something in writing. I finally got ONE sentence on a letterhead. Joke. But, the school accepted it. I honestly would stay far away from her.

Sorry to rehash- Developmental Ped recommendation

I agree with the above poster about Silverman. Many people like her but I would never recommend her. She was one of the worst doctor's visits I have had. I use Dr. Adesman at LIJ and I think he is fantastic. I also was just in contact today with Dr. Hillary Gomes, she is a pediatric Neurologist, and I was highly impressed with her by just talking to her on the phone. She comes with great recommendations and really knows her stuff. She is in St. James.

I highly recommend Dr. Robin Smith if you are looking for a wonderful child neurologist! After doing extensive research and based on recommendations from other parents we found Dr. Smith. He was extremely kind, caring, knowledgeable and thorough. He was not quint to recommend invasive testing or unnecessary medications. He also listened to our concerns and treated my son with respect as if he was a human being and not just a number! He was also very responsive to messages and phone calls and really took his time to listen very attentively to our concerns. He is a true gem!

Thanks to the recommendations! I've heard great things about Dr. Adesman but he doesn't take my insurance. Does it matter whether I take him to a neuro vs. ped.?

Same... I love him. He actually sits with you and takes the time to read any and all reports you bring as well as listening to your concerns.

someone here can correct me if I am wrong, but a dev. Ped. Is just looking at development....so they can tell you where your child should be with skills at certain ages and stages. Many people who have kids with ASD find them helpful as autism is a developmental disorder.

A neurologist can do much more in terms of neurology and brain chemistry, so kids with ADD/ADHD, Tourette's, OCD, epilepsy, seizures, etc. need a neurologist.

Granted many conditions could fall under either Doctor, so I think some of it is what you're most comfortable with and/or what the underlying issue is.

Sorry to rehash- Developmental Ped recommendation

We use Dr. Tarnok at Cohen's Children's Hospital. Any of the Development Peds are great, but they all have long waiting lists. My daughter was diagnosed with DCD and she has been amazing with her.

Thanks, this is great to hear. I just started the process of booking an appointment with her before reading this.

ASD is actually considered a neurological disorder and many parents I know with kids on the spectrum have consulted with both a neurologist and a developmental ped. I think it usually comes down to which doctor you feel most comfortable with and which one has the experience to meet the needs of your child.

Adesman is a developmental ped who is pretty well known for treating ADHD, he's written books and does lectures on his work.

Exactly what the pp wrote. Most of my circle of friends have been to both types of doctors but then continue with the developmental pediatrician for continued services. We see Adesman every 3 months. Dr. Adesman is very well versed in most disorders or knows someone that is. He use to be on the Board of CHADD (not sure if he still is) and has written many books about ADHD, autism and adoption.

This is all great info. Thank you all so much for your insight, especially because I'm new to all of this as a parent. Chat Icon

Re: Sorry to rehash- Developmental Ped recommendation

I was hesitant to see Marci Silverman based on reviews. I saw her yesterday, and I really liked her.

We did not have a good experience with Silverman although she was nice. I am taking my DS in January to see a neuro, Dr. Robin Smith, based on reviews.
