Book Jackets

My husband and I disagree as to whether to keep book jackets on our children's books. I like to keep them but he says it makes it cumbersome for the kids to grab their books and have to deal with the jacket slipping off while they read. I feel bad getting rid of them.

Opinions?

Re: Book Jackets

I hate taking them off but my kids (2.5 and 7) are ALWAYS yanking them off so I've given up. I have most of the book jackets in a pile in my DD's closet.

I would love to keep them on but dd has always pulled them off and left them everywhere. Eventually I gave up and now any time I see one off it's book it gets tossed in the recycling bin.

I take them off and have a pile - not sure why I am keeping them - they do get in the way

Ditto. And to me, they are unnecessary. 9 time out of 10, they have the exact same picture on the cover. I throw them out immediately.

Re: Book Jackets

To me, a book jacket is a part of the book.Something designed and approved by the author (and the publishing house) to be a part of his hard work. So it always stays on! When the kids were little and would take them off and throw them around we would have discussions about how we treat books. Eventually it stopped. But no part of a book is going in the garbage in MY house!

No kids here but I love your response. Books are so precious and I won't even put one on the floor, let alone throw out a part of one. Chat Icon

I have to agree here. From day one we have taught DD to be gentle and respectful of her books. She is almost 2 now and does great. She doesn't rip the jackets off and if it does come off she will put it back on before putting her book away.
