genealogy and DNA: some stupid questions, some not-so-stupid questions
Bear with me..! I'm interested in learning about heritage and relatives and have some questions. Any advice or tips are appreciated.
1) what service or databases did you use ? If you pay for anything, was it worth it?
2) did anyone do a DNA test? If so, were you surprised at the findings? Was it worth it?
3) if you have a very uncommon last name, could it mean that everyone who has the same last name is somehow related? I know this sounds like a stupid question… But I guess I just don't understand how last names were assigned. Not sure if I'm making sense. But if the first Smith family were the Smiths.. How did others end up with that name? Do you know what I mean? Like my last name is very unique. But I see some people live in Iowa and have the same name. Would I be wrong to assume we are somehow related?
4) do the paid geanology sites only work or give info if others have added to your family tree?
Thanks :)

My Parents did it. It was with Ancestry and highly accurate. Cost was 99 bucks I believe.
My Mom's wasn't surprising but my Dad's was. He had a Grandmother who was adopted. Turns out, my dad is 25% Saudi Arabian! He was very surprised b/c he thought he was 100% Italian. It is so cool to do and definitely worth the money.
ETA: Also, the site connects you to relatives that have your DNA. My cousin did the test and she was linked to my Father as a Niece- we didn't know she did a test but that's how accurate it is!

Don't have the answer to all of these but I can give you my experience:
My aunt is very into Ancestry.com and I use her log in. She pays for it and it's wonderful, we have access to so many interesting things including news articles about our great great great grandparents.
I can't speak for the DNA test but I have a very uncommon last name and can say that everyone I've ever come across on social media or on Ancestry.com with my last name is a distant relative. I haven't confirmed with each of them but a few years ago my Grandma Facebook friended a bunch of them (yes, at 91 years old she's all about her Facebook) and they discovered they were cousins of my Grandfather.
I'm not sure if I'm answering your question correctly but you don't have to add someone to your tree to see their information. Prior to adding my DH to our tree, I found information out about his grandfather and send it to him. He was pretty shocked as he didn't even know his Grandfather's story---when he was born, where, etc. So I'm not positive if it was only because my aunt has a paid account but I was able to see facts about people that were not in my family tree.

My cousin did the DNA Ancestry thing and found out our family was linked to Napoleon...I don't know if it's BS or not!

I did 23andme and the national geographic genome 2.0.
Paid $100 for the first and i think $200 for national (cant remember exactly.)
I really like 23andme because it will send you emails of people that are related to you. For instance, found a 3rd cousin that happened to come from where my mom grew up. They find your relatives based on your genomes (which you can share.) Also, 23andme will tell you what countries make up your background. For example, if you think your italian, it may have 30% italian, 20% greek etc.
This was important for me to know as ny family doesnt have much info on our history passed our grandfather/grandmother.
National Geo on the other hand, will tell you what country your bloodline most resembles. Somehow i ended up with Greek because of my high Mediterranean %.
Hope this all makes sense:)

Ancestry DNA gives you a breakdown of your ethnicity... 30% German, 20% English, etc

Crazy question for DNA testing.
Can a DNA test be done with just siblings to prove they have the same father?
I can't find anything online. Everything I found says the mother or father has to be tested. The father has passed away so it's not possible.

Re: genealogy and DNA: some stupid questions, some not-so-stupid questions
My husband and his sister both took the test...and did not include that they're siblings, they have different names, etc and ancestry.com told both of them in the report that they were siblings based on 100% Dna match.
