What to do for parents of baby in NICU?

Family members just completely unexpectedly delivered their baby at 27 weeks. I can only imagine what they're going through and I'm sure and have a long road ahead of them. I'm wondering what, if anything, I can do aside from prayers. They are OOS, so I would be sending something.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Look into what's around or in the hospital. Stonybrook had a Starbucks for example. Gas or restaurant gift cards. A journal. Shutterfly gc.

What to do for parents of baby in NICU?

Food (delivers meals, restaurant gc) after long days at the hospital they're not going to want to come home and cook.

Offer to help. When my mom was sick our neighbors just came over and took our laundry. We put up a fight but they did what they knew needed to be done and was the last things on our mind to do.

Edit. Just saw oos. Disregard the last part.

I agree with this! also it would be helpful if that restaurant delivers in case they don't feel like eating at the restaurant, they can just go home and order the food, and have it delivered.

Re: What to do for parents of baby in NICU?

One of my triplets were in the NICU for almost 10 weeks and two for 7 weeks. The BEST thing people gave me and my husband were gift cards to restaurants around the hospital. Also people coming to visit me during the day. My husband went back to work, so I was literally at the hospital from 9am until he got there at 6pm usually by myself. It helps me so much when friends and family came to visit around lunch. We would spend time with the babies and then we would get out for an hour. Freezer meals were also great, bc the last thing that is going to be on her mind is cooking so if there is a day she is home just something she can pop in the oven quickly. Lastly a small basket of things like a good lotion (your hands become so raw from washing them 100 times a day), a sweater or warm shawl (NICU can get chilly), a journal so she can take notes, a light read book that she could read when taking a break, a disposable camera that she can leave with the baby (one of my favorite things- the NICU nurses would take pictures when i wasn't around or if something cute happened over night), preemie knit hats and preemie onesies.

Re: What to do for parents of baby in NICU?

Food food and food. My DD was in the NICU for 39 days and the LAST thing I was thinking of doing during that time was cooking. DH and I had A LOT of take out, but some of our friends and family made us meals and froze them so that we could come home from the hospital and have a home cooked meal here and there. It was a lifesaver. So whether you do a gift card, send pre made meals, or have a restaurant deliver to them, send food.

My son was delivered at 31 weeks and he was in the nicu for 44 days.
Last thing on my mind was cooking and eating. Since you are out of town, gift cards would be the best. Maybe gas cards as well. I was driving back and forth to the hospital twice a day.
Prayers for your family.

What we needed when my babies were in the NICU was food. The last thing we wanted to do or even had the energy for was cook while going back and forth to the hospital to see the babies. We live in Lindenhurst and my babies were in Winthrop in Mineola. I forfeited my disability and went back to work 2 weeks after having the babies so I could have 10 weeks home with the babies when they came home from the hospital. DH and I both worked in Melville and by the time we got out of work, we had to come home and let our dogs out and feed them and we didn't get to the hospital until after 7pm. Having someone to let the dogs out would have been a huge help. We had my brother who lived down the block but he didn't get home until later a lot of times so that was hard. Those are th two things we really needed and appreciated.

Food, food, and food. Mayve those travel pillows, I'm sure my DH could have used one (I know I would have had I not been a patient as well).
