Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Watch it, obsessed! We DVR because we are typically in bed by the time it's on, and we're pretty behind. I usually agree with him 100%, there was ONE topic that I didn't fully agree with him on, and it had to do with the pharmaceutical reps and doctor lunches - mainly because he presented the information in a way that it is perceived by outsiders and NOT what the reality is in 99.99% of practices. After watching the segment you would easily believe that the reps and drug companies are taking these doctors out for lobster and steak lunches all the time... that's just not the situation, and to be honest, the people who benefit most from these lunches, are the office staff - and they are Panera sandwiches, Chipotle, sometimes (if you work in a small enough office) japanese.

But I think 10 years ago that was the case (taking doctors out for dinner). I used to work pharm. dinners at an upscale restaurant 10 years ago, and some of the bills were insane! I used to make a fair bit of $$$$ working these dinners. I believe there was a law passed to stop this a few years ago.

Yes, however he presented the material as if that was still the case now. The law passed about 10 years ago. And there are parts of the law that make sense and are good, and there are parts of the law that are ridiculous - such as the ban on advertising products - i.e. PENS, like, seriously, pens? Allegra used to have the BEST pen, it was my favorite pen, it wrote so well, felt good in the hand, etc.... stupid thing, I know. But that part just seems so stupid to me, I get the lavish dinners, I get the big vacations masquerading as an educational seminar.

I'll have to watch the episode. I think because he's British, the whole pharmaceutical advertising is just crazy to him.

And yes, the pens were great!

Working in Pharma Compliance I can tell you the laws and regulations in the last 10 years have changed drastically. The days of expensive dinners, all afternoon lunches and anything branded are long gone. And the UK (really all of Europe) it is all much stricter. All branded items are hard to come by now, even for Internal employees. I have a drawer full of pens that can't be used outside of my office.

I'll see what good ones I still have left. The newer ones aren't nearly as good because they couldn't spend as much $ on them!

Seriously, I'll take them Chat Icon

The ones from the facilities are crap 90% of the time.

We get lunches catered twice a week, and we look forward to it.

I watch! And I also rolled my eyes at the pharma discussion. That doesn't happen anymore and he made it sound like doctors were prescribing unnecessary drugs because a rep bought them a steak. While I'm sure some crap doctors did that, the VAST majority did not. And obviously no one is doing that now, unless they're easily swayed with catered Subway.
