Credit card fraud question

A few weeks ago, we were away for the weekend. We got a call on our home answering machine (which gets forwarded to my cell) from Capital One who wanted to verify unusual activity on our card. The guy had a heavy accent, but I managed to get the phone number and what he said were the last four digits of the card.

We have not used a Capital One credit card in what has to be 10 or more years. We weren't even sure the account was still open. Because of this, we didn't have the card on us (we don't even have the actual card at home anymore either). Dh called the number and they wanted his ss# over the phone. He was reluctant to provide it. So they went through a series of questions to verify his identity, like challenge questions you might put online. Once done, they still would not tell him how much or what the charges for, they just confirmed the charges were not ours and would stop any further charges.

We got home and looked for the card, but we no longer have it and ds remembers cutting old cards up. But weeks later, we never got a statement or anything from them about the charges. I'm finding it all very fishy. We've checked our credit reports and they seem fine. Should I not worry about this until I get some kind of bill?

I would call Capital One customer service. You can get their number from their website.

I once received a call like that from Chase which I thought was odd. I asked if I could call them back and they told me to call the number on the back of the card (which obviously meant it was legit but, I still called them back).

If you call Capitol One customer service and explain, they'll definitely have a record of the call and actions taken if its legit.
If not, then i'd put an alert in with them and then possibly keep a close eye on your credit report. Do you remember what info they got from you?

Dh was asked questions (like multiple choice). Like: Which one of the following was a previous address that you lived at? She would list choices and one of them was a previous address.

I guess what made me most uncomfortable about was that after all that trouble verifying his identity, she still wouldn't tell him the amount of the activity or what type. And if we were disputing it, wouldn't they send something in the mail for us to sign? He seems to think its all good now, if we get a bill I'll worry then...

I would be 100% concerned.

I get asked questions like this when they're running my credit to buy a new car.

I'd contact the credit bureaus.

Sound 100% like fraud.
I don't remember exactly what I was signing up for but I think PayPal. I remember getting ask questions about what street I grew up on and I know some multiple choice answers were none of the above.
I've also seen these questions when I signed my boss up for something.
Call Capital One and run a credit report asap.

Same. Never call the number they give you, instead call the number listed on the bank's web site or on the back of the card. The call you got could be phishing for personal information and answers to challenge questions to open up a fraudulent account somewhere else. I'd call Capital one using a number on their web site to see if the call you got was legit or not.

Re: Credit card fraud question

The same thing happened to me the end of March with Capital One. It sounds like from the same guy from the fraud department. I thought it was a scam too. I then called the main number and got a manager on the phone and was told that it wasn't a scam. I had a $25 charge from CA and something else small that weren't mine. They immediately closed my card and reissued one with a new account number. I have a small balance on that card and rarely use it. It took two months, but they credited those charges and the interest. It's scary!

Definitely call the capitol one customer service number. I got a weird call once from someone saying they were calling from a specific chase branch, so I just googled the main number for the branch and called there (turns out it wasn't a fake call).

Re: Credit card fraud question

I would call Capitol one and put a stop to opening new credit on you credit reports. Just because they asked you the questions, you gave them all of he answers for them to prove you are you to someone who is asking them these questions.

For anyone else, the rule of thumb I go by is that I thank them for the call. Ask for their number, their name, their identification codes and then I hang up with them and call the number listed on my card. Then I ask them for their fraud department and explain that I was called. I do not volunteer personal info to someone who called me.

PSA TO EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!

If you get a call from a credit card company saying ..ANYTHING. ASK THEM FOR THEIR NUMBER.

1. Look on the internet for that phone number, does it exist?
2. What you SHOULD do: Call the number on the back of the card.

I almost always all them back. I almost NEVER give m info. I ask for the number to call. compare that to the back of the card. remember, they can give you a fake number to call back.

My DH and I got a call from Home Depot. Seemed pretty scammy to us. We asked for the number to call back. Googled the number and it SEEMED legit actually. Called the number on the back of the card. Ends up someone used my DH info to open a new credit card. But we called THEM back.
