Who to call for a "dip" in the ground in backyard?
Our backyard has always had this dip in the grass in front of our deck. We've added dirt over the years to try and flatten it out but it doesn't work. The past few weeks we've been using one of those inflatable pool with a water slide and when we drain the pool some of the water goes to that area that dips. It looks like it is sinking more now. We have sewers so we don't have a cesspool. Who would we call to come check this out? I don't even want to take the kids in the yard now until it's checked out because I'm nervous that area of the ground will collapse. Anyone know who we would call and have any recommendations? TIA!

Our landscaper is here now. DH just went out to ask them but the owner is not here so I'm not sure these guys would know.

Re: Who to call for a "dip" in the ground in backyard?
We had one in our backyard. Our neighbors told us that when they first built the complex the builders cheaped out and just threw old trees and put dirt and grass on top. So after many years (60 years now) they decompose and the ground sinks.
We also tried to just throw dirt there, but it was never enough. Our dip goes to the property line, so we ended up building a wall at the property line under our new fence and backfilling with dirt. It takes 5x more dirt then you really think once you compact it down - that is probably why what you are doing now isn't working. It's helping, but so little that you can't tell.

Who to call for a
We just called someone and he is coming in the morning. He said when our village converted to sewers a lot of the cesspools were not abandoned correctly and it sounds like that's what it is. DH dug some of it up before calling and found slate pieces. The guy said it sounds like the old cesspool covers.

That's so crazy. My parents have a dip like that. In the 90s it wasn't as noticeable as it is now. Supposedly it's been looked at and is "nothing" I am going to make them investigate further.

I have that in my front yard. Before towns converted to sewers they had cesspools and guess didn't always fill them correctly.

We have sewers but, we had a cesspool collapse. We didn't even know the house had a cesspool. I would call a sewer company to come look at it.

Good for you to check it out. Old cesspools are very dangerous, especially of they were made of cinderblocks, as they can cave in.

The guy came this morning. He said it is the cesspool but it was filled correctly. It's a settling problem. Whoever tried to fix the dip on the ground didn't do it correctly. He told DH to stick a broomstick handle down the hole of the cesspool cover and move the dirt around and then fill it with water and keep moving the dirt around and filling with water until it won't do it anymore then fill it with about 2 years of dirt. He said he can have his men come do it but it'll cost about 500 and DH had already dug the hole. So DH is working on it now.

Evergreen cesspool service 631-360-9633. Seemed like a really nice honest guy and so far everything he's told DH seems to be true. He told dh what would happen as he was filling the hole and mixing the dirt around.
