What's the deal with "Inside Out" ?
I'm hearing a lot of negative feedback from parents of young kids, like they've walked out of the theater because it was so depressing & sad.
Have you seen it? And what's your opinion on an age appropriate range for this movie?
Thanks!

Re: What's the deal with "Inside Out" ?
I saw it last weekend with my 6 year old DS. He was invited to a movie party for a classmate. All of the parents there really liked the movie, including me. I think it was really cleverly done, and it really emotionally resonated. I definitely teared up at parts of the movie, but I think some of the depth went over the kids' heads, as they don't have the perspective of an adult. My son is not huge into movies, but he liked it. The kids all seemed to enjoy it.
I had also heard some negative feedback on Facebook before I went to see it, about how the movie was so dark and not appropriate for kids. I did not find it particularly "dark" -- there were some sadder moments, but the whole moral of the story is that it's ok to feel sad sometimes and not try to cover up your true emotions. That's a good message for kids. And the sadder parts had to do with things like moving to a new town, feeling out of place at school, outgrowing certain things.
Personally, I think it wasn't as dark as a lot of Disney/Pixar kids' movies... At least there was no death! When my son first saw "Frozen," he kept asking me when the parents were coming back! And "Finding Nemo," with the family dying? Ugh, so sad. And a child's worst fear!

We went last weekend and loved it. DD, 8, is high functioning autistic and loved it too. She actually said at the end, I guess it's ok to be sad sometimes because it helps you to know what joy really is. She totally got the concept and I think it's a great thing for all kids to learn : ).

Re: What's the deal with "Inside Out" ?
All 4 of us loved it. DS is 12, and DD is 9. It IS rated PG, not G, so there's a reason why it's not G.....
Yes, there are some sad parts, just like in real life, but overall, it's a very funny, happy movie, and it just explains that it's OK to be sad sometimes.
This is one of a handful of movies that I can see myself watching several times. There's not many movies that I would watch over again. Even if I like the movie, I rarely watch it a 2nd time. This had so many good scenes, you can't pick up on everything the first time through.

What's the deal with
I feel like so many people try too hard to shelter their children from anything that is remotely sad and that is why the negative feedback. Personally, I think that that only stunts their emotional development. If you never give a child the chance to learn how to be sad, mad, grieve, etc, I don't see how you expect them to do so in a well-adjusted manor as an adult.

I LOVED it This is from a person who HATES disney movies, hates anything animated. I went saying- ok I"ll suffer through it for DD and because it's a rainy day. I ended up loving it more than she did. It was funny, and yes it was SAD. I cried...quite a bit.
But it's the only kids movie I have seen that I really remember and think about.
It wasn't depressing like death- like Bambi's mom dying. There were just emotional parts. Kids probably won't even get the emotional parts. DD didn't think it was sad.

We took our almost 4 year old to see it and we all liked it. Some parts were sad, but it didn't make me cry. I actually got more sad with the Lava short movie in the previews!

That's just it, I feel like there is so much sadness in older movies, and they don't even tough upon that nowadays. Bambi's mom, Dumbo's mom (oh man, that scene at the elephant cage, cry every time), etc.

Exactly - I LOVED it - Pixar is always clever, but I think this movie particulary was perfectly appropriate for kids to see and understand a little girl dealing with something that maks her sad .......... KIDS GET SAD ......it happens, it's reality. If you don't teach them how to cope with the sadness they end up completely incompetent, emotional disaters as young adults.

Same here.
I took my 3 and 5 yr olds and we all liked it.
I didn't think it was very sad at all. I LOVED that it took a look at emotions and how it's important to feel all different emotions and not just be happy all the time.

I agree with this 100000000%. You can't shield your children from life. That's also the message of the movie - you can't avoid sadness, sadness has it's place in life.
I saw the movie last weekend and I really liked it. I totally teared up. As an adult I think it went far deeper for me than for my 7 year old.

Re: What's the deal with "Inside Out" ?
It was extremely sad and somber to us (parents). It was not really amusing IMO for a child, there were barely any funny parts to laugh at for kids. I was being hugged much of the movie, out of sadness. We found it to be very depressing and I said that I think it's best for older kids, even then though, I sort of compare it to UP. Another very sad movie. It was a great movie with a great message, but it was no comedy by any means in the scheme of things.

But it had a happy ending. I found it more emotional than sad.
That's how I viewed it, too.
I found certain scenes, such as when particular aspects of the girl's childhood memories/personality were gone, to be very emotional (I have one child and he's growing up so fast!). But it's an inevitable part of life, growing up, maturing. And the emotions I felt were from the perspective of being an adult and a parent.
And I think a lot of the young kids who saw the movie who wouldn't grasp the deeper points would still find a lot of the surface interaction funny. The characters that represented the different emotions were funny.
But in the end, everything worked out for the girl, DESPITE having gone through as a sad time.
I do disagree that a lot of kids' movies today don't have sadness in them, though. As I said, Nemo and Frozen involved family members' death, and -- aside from death -- I remember my DS being sad/scared by "Toy Story" when he was younger because of the neighbor boy was very "mean" to the toys and some toys were neglected and lonely/sad. My DS's school had a movie night and showed "Big Hero 6," and my DH took him, but said that had a lot of dark issues crop up (I think the brother died?). I have to say, while death is a part of life and something that we can't shield kids from, I don't want to have to discuss/explain it/answer questions about it after every kids' movie we see. I do prefer something like "Inside Out," which shows sadness as a natural part of life but wasn't "death focused."

I thought Cinderella was sad too. The mother dying, then the father. Ugh
