A Dumb question Regarding Water
I'm a big water drinker - right from the tap. Is this really THAT terrible? SHOULD I really switch to a Brita? I personally don't mind the taste of tap.

I'm wondering this too. I live further east in Suffolk and I drink a ton of tap water. The other day someone saw me and acted like I was drinking poison.

Re: A Dumb question Regarding Water
If you are in Suffolk:
SCWA Water Quality by Distribution Area
I'm in Area 1 and it seems that the only possible concern is Iron. I guess I should buy some more Brita filters!
ETA: Doesn't seem like Brita does any good against Iron
Brita- What we Filter.

Re: A Dumb question Regarding Water
I'm not a brita fan. I think a lot of people don't clean those pitchers and those germs/bacteria are worse than the tap. We have a brita and I try to make DH clean it since I didn't even want it in the first place but even we are guilty of forgetting to empty it and sterilize it from time to time. JMO

I live in East Islip, if that matters. We also have a place upstate, but up there I do filter the water.

A Dumb question Regarding Water
My mother had a breast cancer scare (turned out to be nothing) a few years ago and the doctor told her he would not be drinking the water on long island she should have a filter. I lived in the city for several years and drank that water but moving out to Long Island, we now have a Brita-- would like to eventually get one for the tap. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Re: A Dumb question Regarding Water
Unless there is an issue with your water supply (for example: my friend lives near the Bethpage plume), tap water is fine. Some bottle water is actually *gasp* tap water. Plus, you are helping the environment by reducing the amount of plastic you use.
Food for thought:

This was a very small blurb on the news in early May but it was enough to get my husband to insist on bottled water again .... Can't say I blame him.

Re: A Dumb question Regarding Water
I drink tap, or filtered from the fridge. I don't worry about whether it's filtered or not.
http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/water/bottled/bottled-water-illusions-of-purity/
In 2009, almost 50 percent of all bottled water came from municipal tap water supplies.
According to a 2010 survey, only 3 companies provide the public with the same level of information available for tap water. This includes where the water came from, how it was treated and what the results of the water quality tests were.
Independent testing of bottled water conducted by the Environmental Working Group in 2008 found that 10 popular brands of bottled water, purchased from grocery stores and other retailers in 9 states and the District of Columbia, contained 38 chemical pollutants, with an average of 8 contaminants in each brand.

My best friend tests groundwater for a living and uses a Brita filter. That's what we do, too.

A Dumb question Regarding Water
It's probably a mental thing but my parents always used bottled water so I use the Brita or bottled water. Howeverrrr... When I make iced tea and lemonade type stuff, I use tap water. I'm not afraid of tap water, just don't like the "taste"

I use bottled only. And FYI if you read the label it will tell you the source. Poland spring is a real spring. Dasani and Aquafina are bottled in NJ or something like that.

Yes if it says Spring water, it's from a spring. Dasani and Aquafina is" purified "water. ...meaning filtered tap water

Re: A Dumb question Regarding Water
We have a filter hooked up to our sink. I just refill a jug from the sink with water that has come from the filter. Once the filter is dine, a red light comes on to tell me to change it. Have been using it for years.

LOL. That's why we got a Brita pitcher. I can't have that big contraption on the faucet. It won't even fit on my type of kitchen faucet.
We use the Brita and/or the water dispensed from the fridge. That has a filter as well
