Inconclusive Gender Determination Updated w Picture

Anyone ever have an inconclusive gender determination sonogram? I'm just shy of 16 weeks pregnant and I went in for an elective ultrasound with my parents and sister today. I did the same thing with my DD at the same place and at the same time in my pregnancy with her. We knew within minutes she was a girl. Today we must've been there for forty five minutes and the baby had its legs closed at the knees almost the entire time. The two instances where the baby opened its legs were only for a few seconds and the tech was leaning towards boy at one point, girl at another, and ultimately concluded that he couldn't determine the gender and that I need to come back. I'm so disappointed and also confused.

What we did see when the baby very briefly cooperated was three dots in sort of a triangle shape. The tech said usually with a girl you see three lines like a hamburger (which is what we saw with DD). He said three triangle dots at 12 or 13 weeks would be consistent with a boy but by 16 weeks he'd expect to see an actual penis. Any one else go through something like this?

ETA: this is a picture of the one peek we were able to get

Inconclusive Gender Determination

Nope. That's probably why they wait til 20 weeks since 16 weeks can be too early in some cases. I guess you'll have to wait 4 weeks!

At my early anatomy scans with both pregnancies, the baby didn't cooperate but did so at 20 weeks with no issue.

Never went to one of those places and definitely don't recommend them. I tell patients all the time to save their time and money. Wait until 20 weeks with a certified ultrasound tech.

Even then it's not 100% sure. I was told at my anatomy scan (19w 4d) that I was having a girl, I even asked the tech how sure she was and she said "oh, I'm 100% sure". At my growth sono (at a different practice), I was told "no, u're def having a boy." So yeah, sonos can also be wrong even at anatomy scans. Oh I must also add, when I was told I was having a girl, u could clearly see in the sono pic the three lines (the hamburger) that shows it's a girl.

That's why whenever I go in for a sono after finding out, I ask them to double check the gender.

Angle is off... Can't really tell.
With DS, was obvious at 12 weeks.
With DD, it was only at 20 weeks that we could tell by US.

its really hard to tell with the pic, when is your next ultrasound? My doctor was able to tell me at 18 weeks, I confirmed it at my anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

My OB REFUSED to even take a guess before my anatomy scan because of situations like this. It's just too inconclusive. I even had a sono at 17wks because of some silly fear I had about some pressure I was feeling (all was fine) and she still refused to slide the camera down to take a peek at gender. lol. Gr! Then at 20wks when we WERE looking, baby wouldn't cooperate! It took so long, but technician was 80% sure it was a girl. I had to go back again so they could finish measuring, etc, and we peeked again at gender and the percentage went up to 95.

She was a girl. Chat Icon

So in your case, I think it's just too early to be absolutely sure. I mean, I would GUESS boy from that picture, but I'd only be like 60% sure. I think you'll just need to wait it out until anatomy scan.

You def can't tell from this picture. If you went to an elective place, they should've had you come back next week to try again. If this was your OB, they'll check again at 20 weeks.

Agreed. 20 weeks is much more accurate. Lots more developed to see very clearly. Not something you want to be wishy washy over.

Hahahhaa, it's a little different when you're having a boy - that first 20 week u/s with the gender pictures, those were some money shots she got of him, there was no denying that he was a boy. But girls are different.

Edited, sorry, don't know why I read 14 weeks at first.
