"Shaming" is out of hand
What is with the rise in popularity about having a negative view on ANYTHING "shaming". Why do we have to agree with EVERYTHING and when we don't you are shaming someone?
There are definitely cases where it is a totally appropriate and true statement, but its EVERYTHING.
Today alone, I saw on article on "makeup shaming" and "only child shaming".
Since when did we start "shaming" everything?

Re: "Shaming" is out of hand
I think it's like with anything else. We (meaning society in general) tends to swing WAY far in the opposite direction with things.
So bullying is bad, yes. Shaming is bad, yes.
So we want to put a stop to it. And in the process, suddenely EVERYTHING is bullying and shaming.
Same with political correctness. Racial Profiling
Everything.
For example, I was watching the news today and they were talking about some robbery spree in a neighborhood in Manhattan. They describe the suspects as tall, slender build in their early 20s, but dont' say their race. Now to me, race is a pretty big identifying factor. I asked DH about it and he said, oh yeah they aren't allowed to say the race when describing a suspect anymore. It's considered racial profiling
That's what I mean. Everything is taken to an opposite extreme these days..

The whole world is full of fckin Causeheads from PCU lately. Anyone with a keyboard and a few buzzword-filled links is passionate about something...for about three days, then it's on to the next cause.

Very annoying. My 20 year old niece is very vocal about "skinny shaming" - which is FINE, but then she makes fun of other women for being "fat." um...?????

Seawolf, I think you hit the nail on the head there.
So many people are angry about a specific type of shaming, but they are find with other kinds. The hypocrisy of it all is what bothers me the most.

I could not LOVE this post more!!!!!!!! I feel the EXACT same way!!!! I am so tired of hearing the word, "shaming". It's honestly stupid and isn't even used in the right context half the time.
I knew I heard it all when someone on here actually used the term "$lut shaming"!! Really, we now how to be sensitive to a $lut's feelings????..............we shouldn't make her feel "bad" for sleeping with a million people??? I just can't.

I am not who you are quoting but since I agree I'll jump in.
We've discussed this before on here. We'll have to agree to disagree.
The word "slut" is a symptom of the larger problem of misogyny in society, where women are held to a different standard than men. When anyone uses this word they are demeaning women in general.

Not even a little bit.
You don't think there is something wrong with shaming, demonizing and judging a woman who expresses her sexuality in a way that does not conform with the traditional, patriarchal worldview?
There is a serious double standard in our society, and things like this create real problems.
I could go on forever but I find it disturbing that people think its ok to use a persons sexual choices as a way to define and demean them.

I'm sorry but I can't get on board with this. We'll have to agree to disagree here because it's not worth the back and forth.
ETA - There is a difference IMO between someone who sleeps with a few people, especially if they are in a relationship AND someone MALE or FEMALE who whores around sleeping with EVERY single person that moves and can barely keep track of who they have been with. So, you can make that "sexual choice" to sleep with everyone under the sun but MOST people won't look favorably upon you. As for myself, I wouldn't want to be with a man who has been with countless women. Gross.

For the slut shaming record, I refer to men as wh0res too. If the shoe fits.... I don't discriminate.

"Shaming" is the new trendy phrase, can't stand it. Makes me cringe. I saw something the other day about makeup shaming. So stupid.

Girls are called sluts if their shorts or skirts are just a little too short or if they're wearing a halter top or a shirt that shows a little belly. That's wrong and that is a reason why this term exists.

Re: "Shaming" is out of hand
If a girl is dressed provocatively or has been sexually active with a number of partners and is raped, people are likely to say "oh she is a slut, she was asking for it".
While people use the term occasionally to refer to men it has a completely different effect. Its not the same thing societally.
You can have whatever criteria you want when choosing a partner or living your life, but its dangerous when you start demeaning people who don't live their lives in the same way. People's sexuality is completely personal.

Regarding "slut-shaming," I think the difference is that the reason "slut-shaming" is objectionable is that very often, the woman in question is not a "slut." Just a normal woman who is exhibiting normal sexual behavior, which to the "slut-shamer," means she is a "slut." Slut-shaming is not calling someone out for being a slut, it is calling someone a slut when she is not. It means having a very very low threshold for what is considered slutty, and castigating perfectly non-slutty, but non-virginal women for crossing that threshold. As opposed to "fat-shaming" or "makeup-shaming" for which the "victim" is in fact, objectively obese or wearing makeup.
