How'd you tell your first child(ren) about the pregnancy? Any special way? Were there any little gifts involved? Of course it depends on age. I mean if they were old enough to understand.

My DS is only 2 1/2 and we told him because he jumps on me and kicks. Thinking he wouldn't fully understand. Well a few days later we're on face-time with my mom and he said "grama, there's a baby in mommy's be-ye" I'm only 6 weeks. Thankfully, she already knew. We were hysterical laughing.

My son was not even 2 when I found out I was pregnant. We told him but it was not a big deal. Now he completely understands about the baby, talks about her all the time, kisses my belly and hugs her. He also likes to tell her secrets. I know he is going to be such a good big brother. I'm lucky he is so excited about this.

DD is just about 15m old so she obviously doesn't get it but we do talk about her being a big sister and how she's going to have a baby sister soon.

Re: telling the big sister/brother

My daughter just turned 4 so I KNOW she's going to be psyched about it (she's been wanting to be a big sister for so long - almost as much as I'VE wanted her to be a big sister). I'm telling her tomorrow night. Was curious how others did it. I got her a pretty little music/jewelry box and inside I put a little toy baby, which is a replica of the size of a preborn 12wk old (which is what I am). Figured I'll tell her there's a baby this big in my belly that's going to grow, etc, etc. I just figured she'd like something physical, rather than only being told some cool secret. I keep thinking back on when my mom got pregnant with my little sister. I was 3 yrs old and my big sister was 6. My mom told us she had a big surprise for us and we were so excited all day. When my sister got home from school she sat us down and said she was pregnant, etc and I just remember being soooo disappointed! I was a kid and thought she got me a barbie doll or something cool like that. haha! A baby in X amount of months is not so exciting to a kid. Once she came, I was psyched, but beforehand we were just kinda neutral on the subject. I feel so bad for my mom who thought we'd be as excited as her. I feel like younger kids are more about the 'here & now' though. Like how I'd rather have had a toy than to have to wait for a baby sister for another 6 or so months. haha (so silly). So that's why I'm thinking bringing in a small physical gift with it might help. I guess we'll see. I wonder if anybody else has done anything like this.

She has one. She wore it for our announcement pic, though I didn't tell her what it said or why we were taking a family picture. haha. I can't let her know until we are ready for everybody to know. I think she'll wear it when we tell in-laws this weekend (finally knowing what it's all about). So giving her the shirt wouldn't really be 'special' in our case since she's already seen & worn it before and didn't think much of it. Chat Icon

We told our 3 1/2 year old the morning we told the world. We gave him a Planes t-shirt (his favorite movie) that said "Big Brother in Training... Co-pilot arrives December 2015". And we gave him books about Mommy being pregnant and being a big brother. It was all totally over his head, but it's such a funny video to watch. He just keeps saying "My very OWN shirt?!?!" (as if he doesn't have any shirts) - and "My very OWN book" (he has a million books...). lol Later on in the day, he was asking more questions about it and we talked about it some more. Since then, he's been saying what songs he's going to sing to the baby and how he's going to help him learn to walk. Chat Icon (He wants it to be a little brother...)

We told my 3 year old as soon as we found out as we were super excited! He was very aware and had been saying since xmas that he wanted a baby brother so this worked out well! He of course ran into school the following day and told his teachers right away! LOL. So we had to dodge our parents and friends until we felt comfy to share at the 12 week mark! We now know he cannot keep secrets!
