If you had a big baby

Follow up appt not till Monday so I'm agonizing until then.

If you had a big baby and were aware based on sonos before delivery, did doc discuss induction or csection early?

Trying to think if induction at 37+ weeks will be an option and can't really discuss till next mon appt. wondering if doc will just wait and see what happens naturally?

Dd was born naturally 2 days early and was average size. DS appears to be a beast

If you had a big baby

Sonos are notoriously incorrect in determining size. DD measured over 8lbs at 37w4d sono and she was born 10 days later weighing 7lb5oz. My dr never discussed CS or induction due to size and I personally wouldn't have felt comfortable doing so. I ended up w/ an induction due to low fluid/high bp anyway. I'm hoping to avoid an induction at all costs with #2.

If you had a big baby

I begged for an induction early, but was denied! They can be wrong- how good is the equipment they're using?

They are definitely wrong often, but it is good to be cautious. I had the opposite happen. They told us my son was going to be 7.5 lbs and he ended up be 10lbs! I had him naturally and it was dangerous. He almost broke his collarbone coming out and I had significant tearing. If they had known he was going to be so big, they probably would have done a C. I don't want to scare you, but if there is a possibility that your baby will be big I would air one the side of caution.

Re: If you had a big baby

i was told DS would be over 9 lbs.
He was 6 days late and under 8 lbs.

the doctor did suggest a c-section only because she said he had big shoulders and i have small hip bones. she was afraid he would get stuck. however, she was will to try for natural if i did.

i ended up with a c-section anyway. i never went past 3 cm and after 19hrs of labor we decided to just do the c-section.

I had a growth sono with bad equipment that put DS2 at 7lbs and 3 with good equipment that put him at 9. The day I got induced I was measured 2x one tech said 9lbs 3oz, the other said 9lbs 1oz- tech 1 estimated correctly! They can be off- get a second look and go from there!

Doctors cannot legally induce you for a big baby, so unless your doctor is willing to work around that then that's probably not an option. If the baby was too big for you to deliver, they would schedule a C-section after 39 weeks, not early. I had this discussion with two different doctors for both my kids. I understand how you feel, but unfortunately delivery before 39 weeks carries risks and isn't legally done unless medically necessary.

If you had a big baby

My sister gave birth to an 11 pound baby vaginally last month. All her sonograms said the baby would be big (10.5+). They induced her one week after her due date.

With my first, he was measuring 8lbs 6oz at my 37w4d appointment. At that point my doctor said we could wait and see if anything happens naturally. She said if it got to the point where the baby was measuring over 9lbs 4oz she would not let me labor because of the dangers mentioned by the pp and go straight to CS.

She offered me the option of having an amnio to determine if the lungs were fully mature and if so, induce to have a chance at a vaginal birth. I chose that option at 38w1d and I'm glad I did. DS ended up being 8lbs 1oz. I had significant tearing, his shoulder nearly got stuck and the cord was wrapped around his neck so it was a bit traumatic. Thankfully everything ended up being ok, but had I waited to go into labor on my own, it could've been a different delivery situation or just ended up with a CS anyway.

Everyone has a different circumstance - go with your gut and put trust in your doctor.

Really? This is very interesting. I will discuss with my doctor just have to wait on these tests so of course mind agonizing with the wait.

This is pretty surprising that there is a law preventing an induction but encouraging a c section which has greater risks. I guess surprise is law makers involved not doctor decision. Not sure that I agree a baby born before 39 weeks is riskier than csection but I'm no expert.

Thanks for sharing. This board is always very informative.

If you had a big baby

Almost eight years ago, my SIL was told she was having a 9 lb. baby.

My nephew was 6 lbs 14 oz. My brother had to run out and buy newborn clothes because they brought a lot of three month stuff and the poor thing was swimming in his clothes.

Not certain my terminology was completely correct using the word legal, but basically I was told they can't deliver electively prior to 39 weeks bc the baby is not considered full term until 39 weeks as of recent. My first was 9+ lbs, I tried to work every angle to get that baby out early, but the doc said no way. Worked out fine though, she was smaller than they estimated.

Re: If you had a big baby

All of my kids were between 8.9 and 9lbs. I am a tiny 4'11". My Drs kept pushing to induce bc of the size. Now, I have to say, my Drs were spot on with all of the weights. However, I felt no need to induce. I am a FIRM believer that unless there is a danger to the mother or baby, the baby will come when and how it is ready. I feel the same thing about c-sections, unless medically necessary to schedule in advance, FOR ME, weight was not enough of a reason.

I am a TINY 4'11", with NO hips, and I gave birth vaginally to them all JUST fine. I was not opposed to a c-section, but I decided that was a "cross that bridge when we come to it" scenario.

My one Dr, for my first, after pushing for almost 3 hours said, lets do the section, this baby is not coming out. I still said no, had them turn of the epi bc I felt I wasnt pushing as effectively as a could and it worked.

So, no, for me personally, I say let nature take its course, unless medically necessary and if the time comes you need to have a c-section, then cross that bridge.

37 weeks is not really considered full term anymore. It's referred to as "early term" now. Studies show better outcomes for babies born after 39 weeks. Doctors are very reluctant to induce before then. I have late term preemies that I was assured were "far along enough" and still have some developmental issues. The article below explains the research and the current thinking well. Good luck!

Re: If you had a big baby

When I was a few days past my due date, I was told I was having a 10lbs+ baby and a c-section was suggested. I was like WHAT?? When? How? I agonized over what to do. So my doctor sent me to a high-risk doctor who did a more detailed sono in the hospital and also told me my baby was over 10lbs. Based on that info and the fact that I was not dilated at all and baby was still very high, I opted to schedule a c-section. My baby was born 8lbs 2ozs.

Knowing what I know now, I would never base a decision to have a C off sono measurements alone.

Also, I would never have opted to induce early, and certainly not before 39 weeks.

Re: If you had a big baby

what are you considering a big baby?
Both my kids were measuring big at their last growth sonos. my doctor allowed me to wait to go into labor on my own - with dd i was 8 days late, with ds i was 2 days late. they were not pushing me to get induced or schedule a c-section as long as the baby was healthy (once i hit my due date i was monitored every other day).
dd was born 8lb 5oz (they said she was going to be 9+lbs) and ds was born 8lb 15oz (they said he was only going to be 8 1/2lb

growth sonos are not always accurate, and are impacted by the babys position during the test. if you are not comfortable being induced or scheduling a c-section i would tell your dr that.

If you had a big baby

DS always measured in the 97th percentile. My dr did not induce and I went into labor naturally the day after my due date. Unfortunately, after over three hours of pushing, I wound up with a c-section because he did not budge at all. Honestly as stressful and upsetting as it was at the time, I have no regrets about how it went down. I am glad I got to at least TRY to have him vaginally and that I was able to go into labor on my own. If I went a week or more past my due date I would have been induced I am sure but my dr did not feel the need to induce me based on sonograms that may or may not be accurate.

DS wound up weighing 10lb 9oz at birth.

Re: If you had a big baby

Mine was born last Tuesday at 39.3 and an induction and he was 9lbs 11oz!

The sono tech was pretty close to being spot on. She had been telling me the baby is big since 30 weeks. My dr offered the induction only after 39 weeks. My baby's shoulder got stuck, had I waited to go naturally I very well could have had a 10+ pound baby and ended with a c section! My first was 8.1 at 41 weeks, and was a way easier delivery, so it wasn't like my body wasnt used to it, and it was still hard!

Goodluck! If you can be induced after 39 I would do it to avoid a c

I was in a similar situation.

They kept INSISTING my DD would be over 10 lbs and they made me SO nervous with all of these stories of the baby getting stuck in the birth canal and then having to break their clavicle bone to get them out. I agonized over what to do because I did NOT want a C-section AT ALL. After much consideration I scheduled my C-section for exactly 39 weeks however, my water actually broke the morning I was due in the hospital for my section. I still had the C-section but my DD was born at only 8 lbs 8 oz.......way less than OVER ten pounds like they told me. In all likelihood I could've probably delivered her myself. My decision haunted me for YEARS, it still bothers me 6.5 yrs later, but I made the best choice I could at the time.

With my son (repeat C-section) they kept telling me he was going to be so small, maybe 6 lbs and change. He was bigger than my DD at 9 lbs 4 oz!!!!!!!

Moral of the story, take the sonos with a grain of salt, they can be SO off. They were completely wrong in my case!!
