Just curious, if you do direct sales appx appx how much do you make per month/year profit (after expenses, etc)? If you feel comfortable sharing, which company?

I'm not necessarily looking to sign on with one, but keep hearing people say how they are changing their lives selling this stuff but my close friends didn't make much and many didnt really make anything after their friends and family bought from them when they first signed up. Curious how many of you are more successful with it!

I haven't been in direct sales for about 15 years. I had a full time job at the the time, I made sure I didn't spend money on products, I always won them. I was earning about 24k a year doing parties once or twice a week.

I'm fairly certain 97% of people who do this don't make much at all. The ones who do are really hustling, and devoting every free moment to it. Far too many people doing it now, and most of these companies are scams.

You don't make much as a part timer. But last year I pretty much committed my weekends to pampered chef from March through June and then a few more parties the rest of the year and I made just under ten grand.

It's hard to make money but I disagree that most companies are scams. It just requires a lot of hustle to turn a decent profit.

I don't get why people say DS is a scam.

DS is Multi Level Marketing. In order to do good you need to have a downline and that downline has to have sales as welL as you. That's where your money is going to come from. Building a team is KEY in DS.

getting into a company now is hard, especially on LI. All the markets are saturated and even the new companies that come out are quickly saturated. I joined a new company before it was even publicly launched and within 2 weeks there was 3 other woman from my town who joined (and not under me)

I feel like if I got into DS 5-7 years ago I would have been able to build a team and have a better income. Now, I use the 2 companies I'm with more for the "discount" for me and my family .

My two friends sell younique mascara. Both have full time jobs. At last check one was making 1k a month and the other $600. But the $600 girl was under the 1k girl. It seems like it's minimal work but they advertise constantly on Facebook and whatnot.

Re: Direct Sales

I sell Tastefully Simple and I will say you get out of it what you put in. If you choose to do it as a hobby; you'll get hobby like returns. If you treat it like a true business and make the calls, have the parties & put yourself out there, you will be successful. You also have to stand behind the product you sell & believe in it.

If you build a consistent party schedule and have good client care skills; it makes it easier. Also like others said, having a team does make it easier to have bigger checks and earn a larger commission.

i think scam is the wrong word but its almost like a pyramid scheme. no matter how you want to twist it and present that's basically what it is. its seems to truly make tons ($$$$) of money you have to have people signed under so that you are getting a portion of their profits.

I know its also about promoting a lot getting people to have parties and buying your products. but it always seems the way to make lots of money is by having people under you. my friend got rope it to one of these DS and swore it was not like any other one and that soon she would be making tons of money went to a party heard the speech to try to get you to buy and sell their products and knew it was just like every other and guess what I was correct.

I applaud everyone that does it. I know I would never have the patience to do it. I hate attending these parties so I know I can never try to host or run one of these.

Maybe it's not a scam in the legal sense, but several aspects of their operations strike me as borderline unethical.

I've heard many spiels over the years from friends, acquaintances and strangers about why I should "join their team." Every single one of them contained promises of riches that were clearly exaggerated based on not only my research at the time but also my knowledge of those people's own economic circumstances. No one who was promising me the world was clearly anywhere near the pink Cadillac or able to quit their full time job. I also find that people would use bizarre, cult like words like "financial freedom" - words that are commonly used by scammers trying to sell get rich quick schemes. Financial freedom? Like that's a new concept - being able to earn one's own living?

Also, there's something wrong when someone has to work to sell an "opportunity." If a job or opportunity is that great, no one will have to convince anyone to do it - it'll sell itself. One person - the wife of my ex's friend - hounded me to the point where I just had to avoid her, even though I had previously enjoyed her company. But she became intolerable.

The pyramid concept is really the opposite of what a healthy economy wants. It's normal and necessary to have some middlemen - that is how we procure goods from overseas and that is how retailers stay in business - but there is nothing good about layers and layers of people taking a cut of the profits from the sale of someone at the bottom of the chain. Why do you think prices are so high?

Re: Direct Sales

I am a Director with Thirty-One and have been in my business since 2012. Last year I made over $15k including income, gifts and earned incentives.
I do agree that the more you put into your business the more you will make out of it. I have built a team which helps my income each month. But before I had a team I could still bring home $500-$1000 a month on my own.
I actually have a P/T job during the week so this is my extra.
I think the idea of "making good money" depends on the person. I'm not looking to buy a Jaguar, I do it for the enjoyment of getting out of the house and to have a little extra spending money for kids sports and catching a night out for dinner with no guilt.
I think I could have picked a hobby that costs a lot more. This is my hobby and I make income doing it so that's pretty cool.

I am an R&F Consultant too. There is a lot of money to be made with this company. It takes a good year with some commitment but it's there.

Not true. im part time and work a full time job and do very well.

Maybe its my natural selling ability.
Def what you put into it and yes some months are better than others.

It will never be my f/t job but I enjoy the products and the extra $ is nice and something i strive for every month.
I def dont devote every waking moment to it.

For those that do this and make decent money, how do you go about setting up the parties? Do you just ask friends? Host them yourself?

I was thinking about joining a company for the discounts and DH said "hey maybe you can sell stuff too!" And then I reminded him that we don't know anyone on LI and none of our friends were hauling their cookies in from the city to go shopping in our living room.

I have done jewelry and currently doing wine sales. I have to say, I really enjoy it because its more for fun.
I know people that do sales and make about $1000 a month and some who do a few hundred. You put it effort, you can get results.

Like I said it's been quite a while since I've been in DS, I started in 1996. I was a group leader for partylite and loved DS. When it became totally saturated I helped a company from Chicago come to LI ( they are still not saturated if anyone is looking for something different let me know) I consider myself to have been pretty successful and I think there are some things that set the successful people apart from the rest.
-You have to sell something you truly love but it needs to be things other people also want or need
-Find a company that is not completely saturated in your immediate circle because that is where you start
-Do not spend a fortune before you earn any money, buy the kit and keep it simple until you are sure you can earn money. You don't need $200 of stuff from staples to get started, you use the device you use for LIF
-Each company wants you to have maximum profit, earn samples instead of buying them, win stuff it's always available.
-If you're not someone that is assertive, or if you can't stand rejection it's probably not for you
-Don't drink the kool-aid, you're family is not going to believe that you will be making 6 figures after 3 parties. Keep it real, it's work and only a very small percentage of people get to that level.
-try to have fun with it, as a single mom it was really my social life. I made friends that I still have, met great people, Sometimes at parties that only had $20 in sales. Going to national conferences were my vacations during those years and I use things I learned there in my current business
-If you have a choice, sign up under someone that is successful. Having a great mentor makes a big difference. Go to trainings in person or online if available.
-it's true the prices can be higher on DS products, but you're selling an experience as well as the products you have to build your own experience brand that will make people want to host parties.

For the record, it's not a scam. Most products have many layers that profit before the point of sale to the consumer. Everyone by now is clear on how direct sales works and how the prices are impacted.
Good luck to those thinking about getting started!

Re: Direct Sales

I don't think these are a scam - I do think they are a pyramid scheme. I HATE when I hear ppl say "I do it b/c its fun!" You know who it isn't "fun" for? Your family and friends who feel guilty and feel obligated to have parties and buy things that they probably would NOT buy otherwise, and put THEIR friends/family in the awkward position of attending a party, just so someone can hustle and make some $$. I HATEEEEEEEEEEEEE DS and I despise when I'm invited to a party, and I don't think I'm in the minority here. If I need housewares, candles, baking mixes, jewelry, purses, etc, I can easily go to the store and pick out something that is comparable and probably cheaper.

100 times this. I will not go to any that I am invited to.
The stuff is generally WAY over priced.
When I need something I buy it. Preferably online. Sometimes in a store.
Never in someone's living room
Sorry.

Most times...ppl come to me. That is where I am lucky. Hosting parties generally allows the host to gain on free products or discounted. So inviting some friends over to have some food, cocktails and a little shopping never hurts. :)

At the parties, I meet new ppl who then friend me, because they fall in love with product and then want to host.

I've never encountered a DS product that was so special and wonderful that I need to have.

Jewelry, purses, scents, makeup, etc.

You can find much better products out there. I do not go to any DS parties, there is nothing there that I need or want.

I don't disagree. It's very difficult to go and not buy anything- not because you want the stuff but because you feel obligated. The only one I've ever bought useful things from is Pampered Chef and I admit Avon has some nice products but I've only ever ordered from a catalog.

This is why I considered joining a company strictly for the discounts....no way am I going to guilt people into buying things from me!
