Not a fun topic, but how long does...

How long do you have that scary/really heavy bleeding after you give birth?

I have my best friend's wedding 12 days after my due date, so for all I know I will miss this wedding, but if I give birth in time, I'm so worried about how to do this day. I don't have to stay the entire wedding, but I need to at least get ready, take pics and do the ceremony.

Any info on how long that really bad bleeding occurs? I know in general it lasts a few weeks, but I don't care about period-type bleeding.

Thanks in advance. Chat Icon

Really horrible bleeding: a few days.
But I think having the newborn baby will be your bigger issue.
You will be wearing pads anyway.
You may be leaking milk (I got it all over my dress even though I was wearing pads at a wedding).
Guess the point is change all pads frequently.

Thanks so much.

Yes, of course the baby is another issue, but my parents will be with it only 15 minutes away from where the wedding is, thank god, so between pics and ceremony, and between getting ready and the pics I could always go home, feed baby, pump for bottles, etc.

Definitely not going to be easy but I'm dying to know if it's do-able since it's just the one day. Hmm...

Not a fun topic, but how long does...

Maybe 3-4 days. I remember it only being an issue maybe a day or two after I got out of the hospital.

Recovery and baby would be my more pressing concerns.

So for the recovery, any thoughts on whether or not it's do-able to have the day, knowing it will be HARD, but is it doable? Ah, so hard to know.

This is very hard to tell. It's a very personal experience. For me I wouldn't have been able to do it. I had a natural birth but I was still experiencing a lot of discomfort and having a tough time with the recovery part. But I know plenty of women who were in great shape two weeks out and it is doable. My only advice is to be flexible and be kind to yourself Chat Icon

Not a fun topic, but how long does...

I had heavy bleeding for the first few days, then spotting, then nothing, then it came back at about 3 weeks PP. I don't think there would have been any way for me to have been comfortable enough to have gone to a wedding, even for a short time 12 days PP. I was so tired, and still uncomfortable, and I had what seems to have been an easy recovery, especially for a C-section. I have family who 2 months PP were still having issues with discomfort after their vaginal delivery.

Maybe about a week for me? The passing of blood clots was so gross. Between the stitches and the bleeding, it would seriously take me about 5-10 mins just to pee, change padding, use the peri bottle, dermoplast, blot with TP til dry, clean up, etc. All pp bleeding stopped around 3 weeks for me.

yea I agree with this. I had bad blood clotting with my 2nd dc...like golf ball size clots! It took me a while to feel back to my old self.

Re: Not a fun topic, but how long does...

The heavy bleeding for me lasted about a week but the pain and discomfort I was last far longer (with my first) I had a 3rd degree tear and couldn't sit straight for a month. It was really painful for me. I couldnt imagine all that standing and moving around 12 days later BUT that's just me.
If I gave birth to my 2nd child, yes I prob would have been able cause I didn't bleed as much and only needed like 1 stitch afterward and my recovery was SO much easier that time around

So it really depends

The heavy bleeding lasted a few days to a week... I did bleed for a few weeks PP though. I also had an episiotomy that was a pain to deal with since it healed incorrectly... but everyone's experiences are different (not trying to scare you!)

For me only about a week for the really heavy stop.
It slowed down SOOO much after that and was really light .

It's going to depend. I had a relatively easy, non complicated vaginal delivery. I did tear a little and needed "just a few" stitches. (dr never told me how many)
I was 100% fine and back to normal with no pain in a week.
Like I could have done anything at that point.
I know others though, who couldn't walk right for a month or more.
So it really will depend on how your delivery goes, and how your body heals etc.
And if you need a C section for any reason, that's a whole other ball game.

I never had any scary/really heavy bleeding. Nothing that would have kept me home! You just wear a pad.

Okay good! A couple of positive stories to add to the mix...So basically if I go early or if my delivery is relatively easy on my body then I have a chance of going to the wedding.

About a week - I will never forget, I had my baby 5 weeks early on dec 23 and i was out of the hospital dec 25 - the baby stayed for a few extra days so on Christmas we went to a relatives house for about an hour. It was his single cousins house which he just redid the entire house and everything - i mean everything - was WHITE! I walked in and was afraid to sit down - I did sit on a white kitchen chair and wouldn't you know it, I bled through the pad that i had on right on the chair - sooooo embarrassing!

This. I never , even in the hospital had to wear anything more than a normal pad and never bleed through or anything

Same here. By the time I left the hospital it was pretty light both times.

However if this is your first it's so common to go late. With my first I delivered 13 days late so I would have had a whole different issue with a wedding 12 days after my due date. I do think I was pretty comfortable walking around a week after with both my vaginal and my cs but every person and every pregnancy is diffrent.

Your big concern about committing to a wedding 12 days after your due date is 1) going late, as many women go a week or so late with their first 2) ending up in an emergency c-section.

I don't think you are going to want or be able to stand that long 12 or less days after a c-section.

Re: Not a fun topic, but how long does...

Hopefully this will make you feel better, but I only had the scary heavy type of bleeding you're talking about during the actual delivery & maybe the day of... afterward it was pretty light & lasted 5.5 weeks in total. My son was born 11 days late, so that could be a consideration that you may not be able to make the wedding if you're still in the hospital, but I think most people don't go that late. So you'll probably be okay physically for the wedding.

I BF all three of my kids and I stopped bleeding by the time I left the hospital. Anything past that was staining and didn't last past 5 days. I had vaginsl births.

At least a week of heavy bleeding and then bleeding up until a month. I am 6 weeks PP and still spotting. Just bring lots of pads in case. I was also very sore due to tearing so I had trouble just getting up off the couch for weeks. That was far worse than any bleeding. You may be sore so take it easy. GL

Same. I remember leaking through in the hospital the first night, but after that it was like a regular period.

I think I had bleeding for a total of 3 weeks. "Really bad" for like maybe a week from what I remember.
