How did you decide between one or two embryos?
I'm 32 and we have MI issues
My husband is all for twins but that's scares me for multiple reasons
My doctor is not helpful at all. Just quotes statistics at us! No professional opinion
Just curious as to others thought process on this

With my first round a few years back, I was 26 with pcos. I wanted twins so bad for multiple reasons one being the obvious of the one shot type deal and not going through IVF again... I transferred 2 each time (one fresh and two frozen cycles) and my daughter was a result. IVF number 2 now, (31 years now) we transferred a single embryo because I cant afford 3 kids. you and your hubby have to sit down and talk it over. Would you be willing to go through IVF again if needed? Can you financially afford to? (Especially if paying OOP) can you afford twins now? There's a lot to think over and a lot to talk about, but only you two can make a decision! Best of luck to you!!

I figured I would be lucky enough if one took and if two did it would be a "high class problem"! After transferring 2 each time, 3 times.....no baby yet.

I was also paying out of out pocket. I will continue to transfer 2 each time.

I suppose if u really really only want one, then u should only transfer one to eliminate the risk of it.

While pondering the same question on the board, another poster told me to be prepared to take home however many babies from the hospital as the number of embryos I transfer. It sounds like you are hesitant to have multiples, which IMO means you transfer a single embryo.

I just did ivf in Nov. we decided to put 2 back in because of a better chance and I am 37. Only one took so I am very happy we put 2 back in!! We also had MI issues . We did ICSI.

What honestly helped me decide is cost of IVF. Even though I have insurance coverage an IVF cycle (fresh) when I went to North Shore LIJ was $12,000. I had $20,000 plus an additional $10,000 if I use a Center of Excellence facility. I ended up having a fresh cycle and 3 frozen none resulted in a BFP(actually I had my first cycle
Cancelled then had to have another). That milked most of my insurance coverage. I switched to RS of NY which is much cheaper than NS. I had 1 fresh and 3 frozen (just transferred 2 Thursday). My first frozen with them resulted in a BFP and I have a 15 mos old DD.

I've always transferred 2 back. Some ladies on here had 2 stick and have twins some had 1 or none stick. I think the odds of at least 1 sticking is greater if more than 1 is transferred. If they were day 3 embryos (a few were when I was with NS) and due to my now age I would transfer 3. Reason being they have a little more developing to do before they implant.

I did Ivf twice. First time I was 32 and the second time I had just turned 33 the week before transfer. Both times we transferred two. First time bfn. Second time resulted in dd. We were unexplained. For me it was about odds. You have a much better chance of it working with at less one if you transfer two. But honestly, don't transfer anything you're not comfortable with it taking.

My first, I was young & implanted 2 (it does give the best odds of 1 child and hypothetically 25% chance of twins)

I recently had a very close friend have a complication with IVF twins. I decided that I would never implant 2. It's rare (I know 3 others well who had healthy kids), but I just couldn't take that risk.

I would be willing to go through another IVF or frozen transfer. I'd find the $ when my insurance runs out. Id be ok not getting pregnant vs twins.

My RE, though not suggesting it, really agreed with my decision (but I have kids & am older).

Totally up to you and your husband! He is all for twins but you do seem hesitant so I would be prepared if you transfer two that you could have twins. I have a son that's going to be 2 in feb so when I went through my first ivf two months ago I decided to only transfer one bc I knew going from 1 to 3 kids would be too much for us. Good luck!!

Though I wouldn't mind having twins, theoretically, the idea of going through a high-risk multiple pregnancy at my age terrifies me. If I ever make it to transfer (damn it), we'll only be transferring one.

we put back two perfect embryos and ended up pregnant with twins for a hot second. one ended up being blighted ovum so the pregnancy continued with one baby. i ended up with preeclampsia and delivered a 3.5lb growth-restricted preemie at 33w. she's perfect now but to say the entire experience was life-changing is a crazy understatement. had the twin pregnancy moved forward the results could have been devastating for both myself and the babies.

at this point now if i had perfect embryos i would probably just put back 1, but thats also with already having 3.5 year old at home. i feel like going from no kids to twins is hard but you learn because you have no prior experience anyway - going from one kid to a set of twins might feel like you've entered crazy town since you already know what its like with one kid. i might lose my mind having twins after a singleton...

so, here are some (certainly not all) factors to think about:
-can you financially and are you willing to do IVF again if this one fails? - if so put back 1
-are your embryos perfect quality on paper - if so put back 1
-Are you ok with the risk of twins - if NO put back 1
-are your embryos poorer quality AND are you BOTH ok with the risk of twins - if so put back 2

I think it would depend on your financial/insurance situation and the quality of your embryos. I did 4 transfers and transferred 2 every time. In my opinion 2 gave me a better chance than 1 and I couldn't pass that up. I transferred 2 on my 4th transfer and I am pregnant with 1. I never had a grade 1 embryo until this last cycle. I was also on a different protocol with a different RE.

I would say if you are unsure decide when you hear the quality of the embryos. GL

I haven't gotten to IVF (hopefully won't need to, Fingers Crossed) but I am reading through everything the girls have written and there are so many good points.
If twins scare you then you put back 1. However, if you are looking for more then 1 baby then you need to understand you may need to go through IVF again. I will be paying 100% for everything related to my infertility so I am already considering putting back 2. The chances of 1 taking are higher; however, I could walk out with 2 babies, but personally I'm ok with that.
I am 34, will be at least 35 when I become pregnant, so I don't know if going through IVF again will be an option for me (especially with the cost). My point is that you need to do what you are comfortable with and what you can afford. But looking at the future is very smart and great points of the girls to make!

I read a great article once about women putting back two embryos to save money in the immediate however spent 250,000 dollars more raising the 2nd baby.....something to think about! Short term gain but long term repayment plan!!

As I said earlier, i am ok with having two but I get if it terrifies you, then go one at a time. I read ladies on this board having triplets from having two put back!

We were dealing with MFI and had 2 poor quality embryos on the day of transfer so we put both back. Neither took. You don't actually need to decide until transfer day, so if you have a lot of good embryos, and you're only dealing with MFI, then you may choose at the last minute to just put 1 back.

I transferred 2 and for a short period I was pregnant with triplets. I am 37 weeks with twins now.

I just had my water soon today and speaking with the dr he suggests one since everything is looking good on my end. But I do want to take quality into my thought process on the transfer date

Ugh all this makes my head and heart hurt. All you girls give me hope, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your stories
