DS crying out at night... Update -

DS is just about to turn 14 months old.

The last two nights he has been having trouble during the night -- every few hours, he'll cry out, it sounds like he's in pain but we gave him motrin and orajel, figuring it was his teeth... and he will still cry. During the night he stays asleep, we just left him after we made sure it wasn't his diaper or anything. Then, just this morning, he woke up screaming at around 4am and hasn't gone back! So, this is way out of character...

Did anyone else have a child who had teething come back real bad at around this age?

Or, do you think it is something else? Is he testing us to see if we will take him, pick him up? He is normally an amazing sleeper - twelve+ hours a night without a peep. So, this is definitely odd behavior.

We only had to do CIO once with him, at around six months, when he outgrew his beloved swaddle (lol). It worked after one or two nights and he was good.

We are taking him to the ped this morning to check his ears or see if anything medically might be bothering him.

Any ideas as to what's wrong with this kid??

I think this is the age night terrors begin. He may just be having a bout of bad dreams and can't fall back asleep. Hope it is short lived.

I'm going through the SAME thing. Last night he went down at 7pm woke up at 11pm and throughout the whole night it was a disaster. This is highly unusual for my guy who has also STTN since about 5 months (he's 11 months now). We think it's teeth too although I can't help but wonder if it's some kind of sleep regression.

He wouldn't go back to sleep unless we held him... he'd fall fast asleep and then as soon as we'd put him down he'd jump up screaming again.

I have no other ideas on what to do but I really hope it passes soon

Thats about the age they say they start to really dream and have night terrors. We went through this and my dr recommended we go in and comfort bc they can be really scared. It did pass. Would still happen every now and again.

Usually happen for us at 2-4AM.

we have gone through this for a few days in a row here and there and it almost always seems to be teething related. i do think at one point he was having some nightmares also. It usually works itself out in a few days/within a week.

So timely! DD just turned 15 mos and we are going through the same thing. Lots of rough nights around here lately. Been racking my brain to think of what it may be - still getting over being sick (but this was almost two weeks ago), teething, sleep regression, growth spurt.

Today, my mom who watches her, told me she thought DD was having nightmares during her nap. Totally unprompted and never discussed. I think the PPs may be right.

Update - we took him to the ped and it turns out his teeth in the back are starting to come in so that was bothering him AND, more than anything, he tested positive for strep!!! Poor thing!! No wonder he sounded like he was in pain.

It's so sad at this age when they cannot communicate what is wrong or what is bothering them.

Doc put him on an AB (this was Tuesday) and he is MUCH better today -- and has been sleeping fine at night, like normal, since we started him on the AB.

Makes sense. Hope he is better soon. DD will on occasion exhibit the same behaviors. It's always comfort related (teething, big poop or sickness)
Otherwise, she always sleeps for 12 hours and wakes up happy.

I swear by the amber teething necklace. I had no idea she my dd cut her first tooth until I saw it! And several times when I didn't put it on her I saw her obvious discomfort. If you don't like the idea of around the neck, double loop on leg or they make bracelets and anklets.
