Considering moving to Deer Park

This is my first time on this forum and do not know exactly where my questions belong, but I'm hopeful that someone could help.

I'm contemplating moving to Deer Park and wondered if anyone lives there and commutes to the city via car, specifically the boarder of Queens and Long Island? What does the commute usually look like and what are the best highways to take?

What is the neighborhood like on a daily basis? I've driven out there for a day, on a Saturday, it seemed nice and quiet. Are there any concerns about safety since the neighboring town has such a bad reputation?

And last, does anyone know about after-school programs for kids? Do the schools provide them or are they provided by outside programs? If so, which would you recommend?

Again, I apologize if this post is in the wrong area, but I appreciate any help that is offered.

Have a good day!

Re: Considering moving to Deer Park

I am live in Deer Park and my kids go to school in the district. It is a very diverse community. The teachers and school seem average.

I commute to Flushing everyday. I take the LIE and it can take about 1 hour without my carpool or longer. I leave about 6:25 am and come back around 3:30.

If you are looking for houses I would east of Deer Park Ave. to West of Commack Rd. in between those areas or if you are looking on the West side of Deer Park avenue go up to about 24th street.

The school does have a before and after school program. They also have free universal pre-k.

Message me if you have any questions.

I grew up in Deer Park- on the west side (numbered streets) right off of Grand Blvd. My parents still love there so I'm there often. The area is quiet. It was a nice place to grow up. It has become more culturally diverse over the years. The school are average. Sorry, don't know anything about school programs. It can get a bit more "shady" on the east side near Bay Shore Road, Commack Road etc.

We live here too. Feel free to FM with any questions. We live on North West Side of DPA. In my opinion, it is a nice middle class town but there are definitely some "sketchier" areas.

We were contemplating Deer Park when we were looking at houses, but were only interested in houses that were zoned to Half Hollow Hills school district. I had done some research and wasn't impressed with Deer Parks schools, which is why we weren't considering that district. In addition, I am a teacher and work with someone who taught at Deer Park H.S. for a few years and he had nothing but horror stories about the experiences he had there. He felt that at the time he was there, many of the teachers were mediocre and just "going through the motions" from day to day, lacking dedication to the the students and their instruction.

Thank you for this information. If you don't me asking how long ago were you looking for a home in the area and how long ago did your colleague work at DPHS? I only ask because I saw the most recent statistics for the school and it seems as though more than 80% of the students passed the regents with 3s and 4s. I have also read blogs were people say that many years ago the school district was questionable but as of lately has become better.

I have been looking mostly at the area, by the descriptions here, I believe I would be on the west side. I've done research about the schools close to this area and haven't seen anything terribly alarming, minus some things about the high school. It's still up for consideration. We are looking at other areas of Long Island too but are very disappointed by some of the older homes closer to the city that are in need of a lot of tlc in other school districts.

Re: Considering moving to Deer Park

Hi, we live in Deer Park for the last 8 years and actually just put our house up for sale. I agree with the other poster, look on the East Side on Deer Park Ave, West of Commack Ave. That is where we are and its a very nice, quiet area. We're a bit up North right on the Dix Hills border which is very nice.

We have a 5 year old son, but we chose to send him to private school, so I cant really comment on the schools and how they are. I have heard they have improved significantly over the past couple of years.

Deer Park is great because it is so close to everything. The Tanger Outlets are right here, lots of restaurants, the Regal IMAX Movie theater, lots of great parks for the kids. We were happy here, its just time for us to move on to be closer to family.

Feel free to Private message me with any questions.

My best friend grew up in the numbers streets. Her parents still live there and two of her sisters live in that section as well and are raising their kids there. They have young kids in elementary and a 10th grader. All of the kids are doing well in school, enjoying various activities. I was invited to attend the 10th graders pre-prom party a few weeks ago( she was invited to the senior prom by a friend) and although I was warned that the party was " on the sketchy side of town" I'm happy to report the neighborhood looked average to me, not sketchy and the party the family hosted was much nicer, better planned and more fun for the kids than the pre-prom parties my kids went to in Oakdale and Hewlett. The kids were also super respectful and seemed really appreciative to have such a nice event planned for them. It was actually really nice to see. I don't live there and never have but it sure seems like a nice middle class neighborhood to me based on my experience.

I grew up near there and still have friends in the area. There's one little section that borders on wyandanch that I would try to avoid, but overall it's a decent area...
