You can try reading books with him on his belly or even letting him watch tv on his belly. Our PT said to put DD on her belly every time we put her down and she didn't roll or sit up from there so she hated it and was stuck. Once we started to push the issue more she tolerated it for longer stretches and would play longer or stay there through a whole show. At that point it didn't take long for her to start getting to sitting from her belly although getting up from her back took much longer. We also learned to encourage twisting activities bc she didn't have that motion down and it was really limiting her ability to move around. I would sit her on one side of my legs and give her a bucket and then put a bunch of little toys on the other side that she had to twist and reach for to put in her bucket. It's so hard when you're not a PT to know what motions and strength they are missing and how to build that. Hopefully you qualify and get some help with that!

As someone who has a child who started receiving services at 16 months, I wouldn't be so quick to call the doctor an idiot. 9 months is early to be walking, but I suspect the ped saw a few other things that caused her to be concerned enough to tell you to get an eval. My doctor told me to get an eval at the 15 month visit and said it might be premature, but that if he didn't qualify, no harm done. IMO, it's always better to err on the side of getting the eval done and not needing the services than to ignore any warning signs and miss valuable time to get the services if your DC needs them.
Even if he ends up needing services, it's not a bad thing. I know kids that got services and after a few months, they caught up completely and were discharged. You are a great mom for looking into it and doing what you can for him.
The way elgibility was explained to me is that they have to be 2 standard deviations from the mean score in one area to qualify. If they already qualify in one area, they only have to be one standard deviation from mean in another area to be eligible.

My older DD didn't crawl till 10 mos (and didn't walk till 15 mos) and she's a great athlete now at 7, so take that for whatever it's worth. 
Same milestone ages for my DS as well. He is almost 3yrs and he is perfect!

My DD never crawled, she scooted until 17.5 months she didn't start walking until almost 18 months. We did an EI evaluation and they felt she didn't qualify. At 9 months I wouldn't be worried at all, you are doing a great job!

I'm a speech therapist. the way eligibility is made is, like you said if he is 25% below the average in 2 areas, or 33% below the average in one area.
SOOO lets say the average score is a 10 ( just an easy number to work with LOL ). a 25% delay would be about a 7.5. so if he got a 7.5 in TWO areas of testing he would qualify. a 33% delay would be about a 6.5- so if he got a 6.5 in ONE area of testing he would qualify (no matter how he did on the other 2 areas).

Final Update.........QUESTION ADDED FOR EI FOLKS -- Having tough time -- need some input

Ds turned 9 months about 2 weeks ago. When i went to doc for his well visit i left upset. First doc was concerned that he is not crawling. Ive been concerned too but knew this was going to be a struggle bc he hates being on his stomach. Whenever we do tummy time he just rolls himself over. Doc told me to call early intervention right away which i did (waiting for eval). Then i told her i just started giving puffs cheerios and some other foods like eggs pancakes etc. i told her that ds is still working on picking up his food with pincher and can do big things like crackers but has trouble with small pieces like cheerios. She told me to no longer feed him and just leave the food on tray and walk away. I left her office feeling like i did a bad job and havent done enough to get him eating and moving. She kept saying she was sure nothing was wrong and he is just being lazy but it made me worry.
I guess im just venting - but im hoping someone might have been in my spot and can offer some advice!
I feel like ds is doing so well in all other areas and that joy all went out the window with this appt!

NEW QUESTION-- I just had my eval done yesterday. They said I should have the results in a few days. They said he would qualify if he ranks 33% in one area or 25% in two areas. Is the higher the number the better he is... or vice versa? Im assuming the lower the number the worse off.
Final Update: Got the results and DS did qualify in the one area of gross motor skills - "large muscle skills". Have to wait for an appt with a coordinator before we can start therapy. Dreading receiving the actual report where it shows his percentages. They tested everything!

Don't get caught up in the numbers at all! DD tested in the first percentile in gross motor. Within a few sessions and with a few changes she improved so much. By the time the reevaluated her 6 months later she barely qualified. In fact, she tested in the normal range but they let her keep one session a week and added a group once a week. She did so well with it and just tested out after another 6 months. You'll probably be so glad that you got an early start and he'll likely improve quickly bc of it!

Thank you SO much for posting this. You do not know how much better it just made me feel. My family is very supportive and they can all say "it will be fine" etc...but hearing this coming from someone who has BTDT makes it better. I really appreciate it.
