Help with first time pumping

No advice other than to make sure you have your phone, iPad, glass of water and the remote. Lol

Also, use a hands free bra

I just hooked up the pump last week and hoped for the best! I will say that I am now getting more milk when I pump but still not that much (17 days out). I get the most (a few ounces) right after I nurse him in the morning.

Help with first time pumping

Yeah this is harder than I thought. I think EBF is easier!!! Plus it doesn't help that DS is a total arm baby. And pumping now takes forever!!!

Help with first time pumping

Massage your breasts for about 5 mins before you begin pumping.

If you're home and its convenient, take a warm shower prior letting the water run over your chest.

Drink a BIG glass of water before you start.

Relax and don't look at the bottles the whole time!!!!!

Help with first time pumping

As an Exclusive Pumper, these are my tips:

Get a Simple Wishes Hands Free Bra --- I live in mine!
Massage your breasts during pumping to get the most milk you can out
Get some Lanolin or Coconut Oil b/c your nipples will hurt... a lot. Put it on before and after.
Get Lansinoh Cooling Pads (Medela and Ameda make a similar product)
Make sure you have the right size flanges
Have something to keep you occupied - remote, phone, tablet
Make sure you have everything you need before you hook up
You do not need to wash your pump parts after every use if you refrigerate them. It saves time!

If there are any others, I'll add!

I had a problem with supply with DD. Two things I found that really helped were:

1) Fenugreek

2 ) Lactation cookies (it didn't hurt that they were DELICIOUS). This is the recipe I used , but I left out the chcocolate chips

Re: Help with first time pumping

don't freak out if you don't get as much as you thought! some people dont react to the pump as well as baby.

pump for a few minutes after you stop seeing milk flowing...sometimes you get a second letdown!

and i like to have my phone on me so i dont concentrate on how much milk im getting.

i never had an issue with letdown but if you do they say to look at pics of LO

after i pump...my left breast always has milk left (right reacts well to pump) so i hand express a few minutes after and can get up to an additin half ounce doing it...it also prevents me from getting lumpy from a full day of pumping

ETA: as PP suggested, i also sort of help it along with a little massagin along the way

HTH!!

Make sure you are relaxed when you pump. I found my supply really suffered when I was tense. Especially when I am in an "oh my god I have to pump really fast why is it not coming out fast enough" situation.

Normal pump output when doing so in addition to nursing is .5-2 oz combined, so don't freak out. Your supply is fine!

Clean and DRY yourself after each pump - I WISH I would have done this from the start - the breast pads are not enough to dry the area.

Re: Help with first time pumping

Keep your back & neck muscles relaxed during pumping & maintain good posture, sitting in a supportive chair if possible. Keep your neck straight & don't stare down & watch what your doing the entire time. I learned this the hard way. I used to spend 3+ hours a day pumping (I didn't bf)... It really took a toll on my body (well, it wasn't the only thing that hurt me, poor sleeping habits & heavy lifting hurt me too). I ended up injuring my neck & back, and now I only pump twice a day & I'm really mindful of how I'm sitting/standing while pumping. But the damage is definitely done from all those months of being careless & not paying attention & hunching over.

You can always combine as long as the milk is the same temperature when combined. So either both room temp or both chilled.

Help with first time pumping

Crap I combined room temp to a refrigerated bottle. I won't do that for now on then.
