Bad Allergies and Behavior

DS has terrible allergies. He sees an allergist and on strong medicine. He gets puffy and very itchy. There's only so much the allergy meds can do and he isn't very good when we try to do the allergy drops in his eyes. They're all red and swollen.
The other day we were outside all day. Hard to tell a 4 yr old boy to stay inside bc he has bad allergies when everyone is outside. By the later afternoon he was moody, itchy and getting very bad.
Last night even after a shower, meds for his hair (allergist gave him a prescription bc he gets so itchy) and lotion he woke up miserable and we were up most of the night together.
This morning I gave him more meds and he has been sooo bad. I know the allergy medicine probably adds to it along with being uncomfortable. It's just so tough and gotta keep telling myself a couple more weeks. He's highly allergic to tree pollen.
Not sure if there's anything else I can do. I do punish him and I do know a lot of the behavior has to do with how he feels and the meds. Anyone relate?? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes I have noticed with my 2nd son who has allergies he has been miserable and not himself since the allergies have kicked in full gear. Claritin does't seem to be giving much relief and eye drops are pretty impossible to get in.
I can't blame him for being irritable as he is very uncomfortable.

I don't understand...why would you "punish" him for something for he can't control? I would try and cut him a break, and just deal with th behavior as best as you can. It's hard, my 4yo has multiple food allergies and reacts weekly during food trials. His behavior is affected tremendously when he's reacting. Also, have you considered local honey to help with his allergies? Also, bee pollen and propolis is supposed to help too.

Do you give your ds a probiotic? It has helped my dd with her allergies.

Ok. First off I meant "punish" loosely. Not letting him play his computer or wii for a day bc he's yelling and being fresh. Again, I understand he's worse bc of the allergies but I am not going to support bad behavior either while he's mean and pushes his younger brother. He was lectured about being fresh and being nice to his brother. He is a sweet boy but he's also a kid who knows right from wrong. He'll be 5 soon. Not a toddler. I do cut him a break though and when he is calm he's back to playing but still needs to apologize.
Thank you for the suggestions.
