Breastfeeding oversupply and forceful let down any advice?

I have been struggling to manage my abundant supply and forceful letdown. It was getting better with block feeding but the past few nights DD has slept longer between feedings and it is becoming a problem again. The forceful letdown causes DD to have gas and reflux- I am going to schedule an appointment with a LC- any advice in the meantime. I am ready to Cry- DD spit up all over both of us earlier this morning then had to be interrupted while nursing so I could deal with the spray of milk.

Can you pump a little immediately before feeding her to manage the letdown? I would def schedule an appt with an LC.
You could try kellymom.com or bravado.com also.
Hugs!!

I wouldn't pump before since that will encourage the milk production. What about manually expressing a little before she nurses?

Manually expressing definitely helps- I only pump once a day and it is usually after my daughter nurses. The kellymom website has been so helpful!

The LC I went to said you can pump before - it's only pumping for a couple of minutes so its not so forceful.

This! I dealt with (and dealing with now) oversupply and forceful letdown with my DDs. Don't pump if you don't have to (only to replace a feeding when you've given her a bottle). It only stimulates your milk production more. I always nursed her with a burp cloth or hand towel next to me and as soon as I got a let down, I'd unlatch her and spray it all into the towel. Then put her back down. If you're like me, you get multiple letdowns, so I'd have to do this a few times. Putting her back on the same breast multiple feedings also helps (which it sounds like you're doing). Also, laying back as you feed her. Side lying also helps—just put a towel underneath you because they tend to let the excess dribble out. DD is almost 4 months and it does seem better. I think she is better at handling it now, too. When she is really hungry, she'll deal with the letdown. If she is just looking to soothe, she'll get fussy. She is still a gassy baby but it's much better than it was.

This. I had to do this with my DD. I used a disposable diaper burp cloth, and waited til I had my letdown and then popped her off my nipple, basically let it flow into the burp cloth, and then had DD latch back on. By the time DD was 2.5-3 months it was no longer a problem.

This time I have it, but not as bad...DS can handle it as long as he's in more of an upright position. I also give Mylicon for gas.

I wouldn't pump until your oversupply corrects itself.

I was making enough milk for OCTOmom when I had DD2. It led to 2 bouts of mastitis. The pump was not helping. Trying nursing "uphill", that seems to have helped with the letdown. Also, I only pump when I absolutely have to. It led to her getting 1 bottle of formula a day, but its also kept me bfing- she is 5 1/2 months and we are still going strong.

Oh man! Can you send some of your oversupply to me? I barely make 2oz at a time. Chat Icon

I'd definitely try pumping for a few minutes before nursing.

Hope it helps!

Re: Breastfeeding oversupply and forceful let down any advice?

DD was in the NICU for 6 weeks, so I was a freaking pumping machine. My supply was so abundant that I was told by the nurses to pump before feeding to get rid of some of the engorgement so she could latch easier. I still need to do this sometimes at home because if I get too full, DD won't latch and if she does, she often chokes because the flow is so fast.

I had the same thing. It would cause my baby to have huge spit ups all over both of us at least once a day., creating an annoying laundry problem. I block nursed and only needed to do one side per feed, alternating the side each time (as opposed to using the same side for multiple feedings in a row) and it worked itself out within a week. I also remember dealing with it around the time my DC was sleeping longer and I was getting super engorged again. If you keep up with block nursing, your body should regulate within a few days of the new sleep schedule.

Re: pumping or hand expressing before a feed - keep in mind that any kind of stimulation, pump or hand, is a signal to your body to make the milk to replace what was expressed. My LC recommends to use non stimulating ways to let milk relieve itself like taking a warm shower and letting milk drip out or leaning over a bowl of warm water with breast submerged. I never was able to commit to those solutions though because who has time for 1 shower let alone many in a day with an infant, and leaning my boob into a bowl of water was kind of cumbersome.
