Very nervous and a bit sad- Dr. told me I'm having baby this weekend!

So I went to the hospital yesterday morning because I thought I was leaking amniotic fluid but false alarm. Seems at 38 weeks I's just leaking clear liquid in decent size qty's. OK!

I had my regular OB apt at night so I went to see him and I told him that the hospital kept asking me if I had gestational diabetes because the baby was measuring 8 lbs 12 ounces according the PA who did the sono. He had the girl in the office do the sono because "shes the best" and would let us know. Well her measurements came back at 99th percentile for head measurement and the baby measured at 9 lbs 7 ounces for her. My due date is not until the 17th and I'm completely closed and with my first birth I could hardly push my son out who was 6 lbs 15 ounces.

The doctor said that my pelvic bones are in no way pushing out an over 10 lb baby and that because of the facts they got with my first birth and that the baby's shoulder could come out dislocated so he scheduled a C-section for this weekend. I asked if he could just induce me and let me deliver vaginally but he said no that they cannot induce a baby of this size and a C-Section has to be done because I am risking my health and the baby's health if I try to go naturally. Obviously I don't want to risk anything at all but I'm just a bit disappointed and scared.

The last thing I ever wanted was an epidural because I just cant stand the thought of a needle in my back and no a full C-section. I go from being happy to crying and I know it's not a big deal to get a C-section these days but I just wasn't expecting this and I wanted skin to skin so bad and I don't know if they let you do that with a c-section. Thanks for letting me vent a little bit. I'm glad I'll be meeting my baby in a few days though!

i can only imagine how you are feeling - i would be hesitant to have a csection bc of a growth scan since those things are not always accurate (which is clearly noted since you got weights that are 1lb off from 2 diff technicians.)
but the fact that your first came out with a dislocated shoulder and was much smaller, i would understand the doctors concerns.

Re: Very nervous and a bit sad- Dr. told me I'm having baby this weekend!

I had 2 c sections - the first after forever in labor, and the second scheduled.

I didn't hold my first son immediately b/c I was exhausted and just couldn't - but I did have him at 12:00 AM - so when I got into my room at 3AM, he was ALL MINE Chat Icon All to myself, w/o even my DH there (I sent him home to get some sleep) and the nurse immediately unwrapped him and put him on me - Seroiusly, best moment of my whole life. And it wasn't in the delivery room

With my second, I got to hold him immediately - but honestly, I was disappointed, it wasn't the same (for ME, anyway) as getting that quiet time, all to myself so late at night w/ that new little man. MY OB actually laughed b/c I wanted to schedule my c section at midnight and send everyone home after !!

Try not to stress. You will be surprised. In the end, it doesn't matter when, or how that baby gets there ......all that matters is he's there and he's yours - Best of luck !! Chat Icon

I had the c/s news delivered to me like you had now. It is ok to be a little sad about the fact that you are not going to have the labor and delivery you envisioned for yourself and your child. But after that moment, you must focus on all of the good things that will happen. Namely, that both you and your DC are in good care, and you must focus on a healthy mommy and baby outcome. No one receives a medal or a monument for how they delivered their child. It is a means to an end.

With that said, pre c/s make sure to poop. It will help you as pushing later will be a little uncomfortable. As soon as you can do so after delivery, try to pass gas. The same day of delivery, please walk. It will be a little uncomfortable, but you will heal so much faster by walking. You will still bleed after a c/s - that was a shock for me. Before your c/s take a nice shower as it might be a day or so before you can take one after delivery. If you can freeze some meals or have a meal train after you come home, that would be good too. After the c/s have your older DC sit next to you as it might be a few weeks before you can pick the older DC up. Feel free to FM and best of luck to you!

I just had my 2nd c-section, and having it scheduled was a MUCH MUCH better experience than having it after a failed induction (which is how I had my first.) I know you are disappointed, I was too the first time around. But if they don't think the induction will be successful, and you'll probably wind up with a C anyway, scheduling it and skipping the induction/labor is the way to go, IMO.

The needle for the spinal was not bad at all...and better than an epi bc there is nothing left in your back (like with and epi)..just a one shot deal.

I was wide awake this time, vs last time when I was very groggy bc of all the drugs I had for the induction/labor. I was back in my recovery room and breast feeding within the hour.the surgery started at 7:59, he was born at 8:08, and I was in recovery by 8:45.

Good luck. And try to focus on the positives. Chat Icon

Thank you everyone. This is all very, very reassuring to hear. Thank you so much for all the tips as they are great to hear!

Does anyone recommend a strap that goes around your belly to cover the incisions? I read this online that they are like support belts?

The hospital gave me an abdominal binder ...they put it on immediately after surgery. I wouldn't cover the incision directly with anything as nurses & doctors will need to check it. They will tell you how to care for it at home, but I was just told to let the water run over it in the shower, and then keep it dry.

I went thought my 1st with 24 hours of labor…ending in a section…..

At the end of it all my baby and I were happy and healthy!!! :)

With my 2nd I will have another section, although very stressful as long as i know we will both be healthy and ok…thats all that matters to me….

Just keeping thinking of your unborn baby…:)

Your post gave me the chills! I'm having my second c/s very soon (we have the same dr) and I loved what you wrote. I didn't get to do skin to skin with mybDD so it's something that's important to me this time

Very nervous and a bit sad- Dr. told me I'm having baby this weekend!

I had skin to skin contact with both my C-sections as soon as I got into recovery which was like 20 min after the baby was born (before that he was cleaned and weighed right beside me).

I was just told by a stony brook maternity nurse- that they are changing that and soon the baby will be given straight to us....

I had some complications with my first and they decided to take him early, but because my cervix wasn't soft, I wasn't dilating and it was clear my body just wasn't ready; my OB strongly felt that inducing would be unsuccessful and it would ultimately end in C-section...
My son ended up flipping anyway- so regardless, it would've ended that way for me BUT everyone I know who was induced early with no "signs" of being ready- labored for hours and ended in a C-section (which ultimately ended in a harder recovery)... This is JMO.... if you really wanna wait and see- then tell your Dr you wanna try labor on your own... People do give birth to 9-10lb babies all the time....

I know how you're feeling. Chat Icon Chat Icon

When I had my DD they INSISTED she was going to be "well over ten pounds". They told me about all of these scary things that could happen like she might get stuck in the birth canal and they would have to break her collarbone. They kept saying how a C-section would be my best option and I was SO torn and SO upset because it's not what I wanted. At all.

I ended up listening to their advice and I scheduled the C-section. My DD ended up only being 8lbs 8oz. They were sooooooo off...........and I could've likely delivered her on my own.

While it was a tremendous disappointment and took me quite some time to come to terms with the fact I didn't deliver her on my own I finally realized that I did what was best for my baby at the time with the information I was given. It was heartbreaking to have had the C-section but my DD was healthy and that's all that matters in the end.

I know it's not what you want but you have to do what's best right now with the information you have. Ultimately, it's your body and you can push for the birth you want but you have to weigh what you want against what's best for your baby. It's a hard decision, I struggled with it too so I completely understand what you're going through.

Best of luck with everything!!!! Chat Icon
