I'm 24 weeks and am really suffering from bad sciatica. Ive always has back issues, but made it through my first pregnancy better than expected. However this time around is a whole other game. I can hardly bend and am in pain when I sit and stand. I have a 2 1/2 yr old who certainly isn't make my back any better lol

Any suggestions on what to do to help myself or alleviate the pain???

Re: Major Backpain

When I was 20 weeks I had horrible lower back pain, and no position gave me any comfort. The only thing that helped that week of pain was a heating pad when I slept. I started taking metamucil (My mom suggested it was constipation-I was skeptical that it was), and it has since gone away. I keep taking the metamucil just in case…because that was HE**!!!!

That's too funny about the Metamucil.
I would have never thought that too. I'm going to use the heating pad. I'm assuming it can't be on for too long though??? And I doubt I can use it at night since I'm so damn hot all the time!

I have DH massage me at night and in the morning it is a little better. My sciatica reared its ugly head at 6 weeks and has been consistent since then. I am almost 35 weeks and cannot wait to give birth just so the sciatica goes away

Re: Major Backpain

I also have my husband give me a massage almost everynight because of my back pain. Also, using a rice sock heating pad works well (seriously a men's tube sock filled with rice, then tied. Heat in the microwave until hot. It hold's the heat for a while and molds to your body).
Another weird trick use a baseball, stand against the wall and use the baseball to massage the area in your back that hurts you.

Re: Major Backpain

my physical therapist told me when i had bad issues to to roll up a towel and put it in the lower part of your back. do it when you sit or drive . it makes you sit straight and can relive pressure off the nerve.

Re: Major Backpain

Same thing for me. I had no real issues during my first pregnancy but this one....omg the back pain gets so bad especially after a long day of chasing a 2 yr old. I can sometimes barely move by 7 or 8pm.

The only thing my dr said I could use was tylenol and warm compresses. I went to the chiropractor when I could and that helped too, but my schedule didn't allow me to go regularly.

I'm sorry, I know what you're going through. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Walking around a lot has been causing me excruciating back pain lately. I use a heating pad on my lower back. Keeping it on Low is warm enough to help.

Re: Major Backpain

Hot baths, heating pads, and massages with a little icy hot have been my lifesaver. I've had terrible sciatica for years and it's only worse now with this pregnancy. In fact any time I do a substantial amount of physical activity like cleaning the house it seriously kicks in.

My OB recommended yoga and stretching and they have really helped.

Just be careful witb the icy hot. It is not recommended for use in later stage pregnancy, I.e. 2nd/3rd trimester.

I used to use it often until I did research on it.
