# of ped visits 1st year

Trying to figure out my healthcare fsa for 2014 and will have a new baby in January. About how many visits to the ped can I expect in the first year? Obviously illness is unpredictable, but I don't even know the typical schedule for well-baby visits yet

Most, if not all, well child visits are covered by your insurance and there is NO copay for them. So it's only copays for sick visits (we have had about 5 of those in the first 11 mos., but dd also ended up with a milk allergy so we may have had more than most early on).

FYI, each ped is different, but we had well child at a few days old, 2 weeks, 1 month, then every month til 6 months, then every 2 mos. after that.

This is the same for us. Well visits are no copay. We have well visits 2 days after discharge, 2 weeks, every month for months 1-6, then 8 months, 10 months, and 1 year.

Ds went for 5-6 sick visits his first year. Dd is currently 9.5 months and (**knock on wood**) she hasn't been in for a sick visit yet.

well, you go 1x (in the hospital), 1x shortly thereafter, then monthly for a little while, maybe 6x at most, and then usually every other or every 3 months until the 1 year appointment. and then 4x per year after that. I would say about 12x a year though.

We also do not pay for well-visits. Only sick visits. Our daughter was never sick her 1st year. Not once did she actually have anything, but we still had like 6 "sick" visits that we had to pay for. We went to get an additional weight/height checkup that they charge you for. Also because we were neurotic first time parents and didn't know better...

If you are going to deliver in January depending on your deductible, out of pocket max and co-insurance it might be worth it to max it out. I delivered in February, had maxed out my FSA and had used almost all of it for the delivery and circumcision.

Interesting. I need to check our insurance to see if baby well visits are no copay. That would certainly be nice!

Every plan is different. My insurance only covers 7 well baby visits in the first year. My doc had us in months 1-6, 8, 10 and 12.

But also check your insurance for this. I paid a total of $20 for my entire delivery/c-section/hospital stay. It was a copay for the anesthesiologist! That was IT.
