[Old photos, but you get the idea.]

Our dining room tree is mostly European glass ornaments (with a few "Made in China" ones that I couldn't resist. Chat Icon )

(This photo shows an old pre-lit tree with clear lights, but I've since gone multi-colored for this room.)

I figure my kids can split them up down the road if they want them for their trees when they get older.

The family room tree is glittered shatter-proof ornaments (Kmart & Target) and sentimental ornaments from over the years:

But I have boxes upon boxes in our crawl space with "themed" ornaments: gold, cream, pink, bronze, victorian style, etc. Chat Icon (I don't want to part with them because I got them on the cheap at Harrows back in the day and the same items would cost 4-5 times as much today.)

Just in case anybody is interested: Tuesday Morning had a lot of Christopher Radko ornaments when I was there this past weekend. Chat Icon

Re: thinking ahead: how do you decorate your tree for christmas?

No theme for ours. I'm not into because I can't afford to buy a new theme each year. I would get bored with using the same colors each year. Plus, I love being able to buy an ornament that catches my eye that season.

Our ornaments are a collection of ones from when we were growing up that our moms passed onto us when we got married.

Also, we had a tree trimming party with our closest friends and family the first year in our new home and they all brought ornaments for our tree.

Each year we purchase one ornament together to place on it.

We enjoy looking at them and knowing that each has a special meaning.

We always use white lights - I'm not a fan of colored lights.

As far as ornaments go, I have been collecting ornaments for over 20 years. I refuse to buy "boxes" of ornaments. I buy one or two unique ones at a time. DH and I also buy at least one Christmas ornament from every vacation we take - I have some beautiful murano glass ones from Venice; a Beefeater that I bought in Harrods, etc.

I love decorating our tree because it brings back so many amazing happy memories.

Same with us, I love putting our tree up because it brings back memories of our childhood and many vacations we have taken together

Our tree is a reflection of our family - Old and new ornaments, stuff from when DH and I were kids, stuff from our kids -
We have a collection of beautiful crystal and glass ornaments I would buy before the kids, now the spiderman and trains and stuf the boys want ......pictures, etc.
I have one of those giant 3 peice snap in and plug in deals. Chat Icon
There's no color scheme or anything like that, it's just a jumbled mess.

But it's hilarious how every single person who walks into my house comments on 'how beatiful the tree is' .....Um, it's a mess, but thanks !!

Re: thinking ahead: how do you decorate your tree for christmas?

I was waiting for Chatham to post her trees-always gorgeous and a bit of inspiration for me.

Our tree is heavy on the red with a base of red beaded garland, red shatter proof glitter ornaments and big red bows. The rest of the tree is sentimental ornaments-we get a new ornament for the family and one for each kid every year.

Re: thinking ahead: how do you decorate your tree for christmas?

I always have white lights. The ribbon & balls change, but it's typically in the red or golds.

Last year I did buy a 6' for my girls upstairs & it'll probably be pink & purple & butterfly, fairies, Disney.

I also bought a 6' for our bedroom sitting area & it's going to be silver & blue, like our bedroom. Maybe make peacock feather ornaments too.

I've always wanted to try a rustic themed tree...with burlap and pine cones etc. but then my glass ornaments will be too shiny and glitzy for that, I think. I stick to traditional christmas colors...pearly white, gold, red, burgundy. Although the ornament we got from our anniversary in montauk has sky blue in it and sticks out like a sore thumb lol.

last year my mom did a "mardi gras" theme. She had a black tree with teal, purple, silver and pink decor with some peacock feathers in it. It's not something I would have considered but it did look pretty cool when we were done decorating.

See I think Burlap and pine cones would be such a nice contrast with the shiny glass ones.

Colored lights and cute ornaments with some bows. I hate garland.

thinking ahead: how do you decorate your tree for christmas?

The large tree in the living room is mostly red, green and gold ornaments along with family and centime tail ornaments. Big ribbon topper and some picks scattered around. My second tree in the office is a 4 footer peacock themed all white lights, lots of green, teal and glass ornaments. Feathers lots of feathers !

Always the same. Red and gold are my color scheme. White lights. And then we have the special ornaments that color doesn't matter for, but in general the color scheme is always red and gold.

Same here.

I'm loving the idea of burlap this year too. I'm thinking of using it as garland.

I had a very victorian styled tree for years, now its pretty basic.
When my kids were younger & lived home we had a second tree in our family room that was all blue, white & silver to match the room.

We had this tall pre-lit tree but my lovely dog decided to chew serveral of the lower branches including the lights so now we are back to a live tree.
This is a blurry pic from 2 years ago. most of my glass ornaments are gold, off white or clear. we also have a lot from our childhood and tons from our kids.

I love perfect theme trees, pinterest has so many I drool over.

I just can't get over that people have MULTIPLE trees going on.
I barely have the motivation and strength to decorate and UNDECORATE one tree- let alone several! Chat Icon

We always do two because of the layout of our house. I do a smaller one (6ish ft) in the formal living room so you see it when you enter our house and so it's festive during Xmas dinner since the dining room is attached.

Then I do the big awesome tree in our den. That's where we always hang out all the time and open gifts. I love being in the den with the lit Xmas tree, so cozy. The nice part...........you can see both trees from the kitchen. Chat Icon

I thought I was the only nut who did two..........guess I'm not alone. lolol Chat Icon

Re: thinking ahead: how do you decorate your tree for christmas?

we have more ornaments than we need, so sometimes i try to stick to one color and others i just mix and match.
we have a few favorites we always put up (like ds's first christmas ornaments. he has about 4) and others we just choose each year.

we also make sure to put up the plastic ones on the bottom (we have a 3 year old and a cat) and i have not put up my heirloom ones (glass 30 year old ornaments form my grandmother) since ds was born.

same topper each year - a star

ok...maybe i'll just go for it and try mixing the rustic burlap and pinecones with what i already have. hope it works out bc i don't want to negate the ornaments i love just to get the theme i want and i certainly can't afford to buy a full trees worth of ornaments to accomplish that either.

What about printing out sepia or B&W photos and hanging them on your tree with the burlap and pine cones?

I always thought this looked pretty (the photos on the cardboard/cardstock):

Same here. Although I do want an old-school white christmas tree (decorated with blues) for our bedroom.

Last year I barely even put up indoor decorations. It's such a pain in the ass to me.

No theme and its basically a hodge podge of everything.

We buy a new ornament every year and once my DS is old enough to pick it out he will be the one deciding.
