Preventing lice?
Now that my DD started Kindergarten, I'm concerned she'll come home with more than good grades
Are there any tricks to prevent things like lice? Maybe something natural to spray in her hair?

Re: Preventing lice?
My mom always had us put our jackets inside our back packs and she braided my hair everyday, after I got it she tried everything to avoid getting it again.

you can spray her hair with lavender, rosemary or eucalyptus - lice do not like those scents.

Hair up and hairspray. I'd be scared to death if I had a little girl. My sister and I both brought these wonders home from school when we were little. The thought of it still makes me itch until this day.

I haven't purchased anything....It just dawned on me. I never had any issue in Preschool or PreK....& figured prevention might help keep it that way.
DD1 hair is so soft & fine, that braids look a mess by the end of a day...plus I can't imagine her hair in them every day.

Re: Preventing lice?
There was a HUGE lice outbreak at our schools last year. I always put my daughter's hair up, or in braids, from day one. I remember the lady at the desk laughing at me when I said I wind her hair up so she doesn't get lice. She said "we have never had a lice outbreak here" LOL....right. She was eating her words a month later!
I also use the Suave brand Rosemary mint shampoo and conditioner. Lice don't like those scents. This stuff flies off the shelves during the school year, so stock up! It's cheaper than Fairytales, I find it at Target. I used the Rosemary Repel from Fairytales (the leave in spray) last year. I have to get more. I spray the backpack, coat, her hair, shoulders and neck. Coats/backpacks get taken off and immediately hung up in the entry way, no putting them on furniture etc.
I had lice as a little kid and I remember my mom wanted to shave my head
My child doesn't ride the bus either. I'm a firm believe that sitting shoulder to shoulder on those buses spreads the lice once it's there. Of course that isn't the sole reason she doesn't ride the bus, but I think it helps!

Re: Preventing lice?
My son just started pre-k and I've been using the Fairy Tales preventative hairspray on him every day. When I was teaching, I always had gel and hairspray in my hair. Lice like clean hair, they have a hard time clinging to "dirty" hair that's full of product. The best prevention is hair is a bun or braid and loaded with spray. No sharing hats, brushes, combs, coat hooks. If they don't have designated hooks or cubbies, have her put her jacket in her backpack.

Re: Preventing lice?
I'm a teacher and deal with this every year. We have our students bring in those XL ziplock storage bags at the start on the year. All bookbags, jackets, hats, ect go inside the bags and the bags are zipped and hung on the hooks. We have not had lice in our room the last three years we have done this( knock on wood).
Also, tea tree oil/shampoo... I use that when lice starts in our school....
Hairspray, gel
Hope this helps

Thank you all for the tips!
My kids are showered daily....I'm getting stuff tomorrow!!! Good idea about the spraying backpacks/coats/ETC!!!!
I need to ask about the cubbies/hooks. I didn't notice at open house.

Re: Preventing lice?
We use the Fairytale Rosemary detangling spray. My SIL sent my niece to South America last year for a school trip with the spray and instructions not to share brushes or combs with anyone and my niece was the only kid who did not get lice in the program. Maybe just lucky but we use the spray just to be safe.

Def fairy tales products! And lots of hairspray buns and braids and ponytail - my dd never goes to school with her hair down - after the awful lice experience last year !!

Showering daily doesn't help. As has been said, putting long hair up and putting in some product can help. Being clean is the worst thing you can do. Clean people get lice. Lice are total snobs.
Mostly take a deep breath, and relax. It will happen to you or to a close friend who you know. Yes its yucky to think about, but not dangerous just itchy. And not that big of a deal to get rid of. One day of intense combing and lots of laundry.
The only guaranteed prevention is to tell your children to hide alone in their rooms all day. One hug with a friend and they may be doomed! Ayyyeeeee! hahaha
