Help me plan my Disney trip

My family will be going to Disney World at the end of January for 5 nights. I have 3 girls. When we go my oldest will be 5 and my twins will be just shy of 3. What are the must see attractions for little ones? What restaurants should we make reservations at? What should we skip?

Plans so far are....

-We are booked at Port Orleans Riverside

-We have a reservation for Chef Mickey's for breakfast one morning.

We have a reservation for breakfast at Cinderella’s castle (I really wanted dinner....but everything is already booked)

-We booked hopper passes

Any tips, suggestions, opinions are greatly appreciated!!! I don't want to make mistakes when planning...although I’m sure I will Chat Icon

Help me plan my Disney trip

Do your kids like Disney Jr? Then, I would check out Hollywood Studios one of those days and look into Hollywood & Vine restaurant where some Disney Jr characters come to your table while you dine. There is also a Disney Jr Live show at the park. I love Hollywood Studios!

Chef Mickey's is a great choice!

Are you basically looking for character dining or just recs for restaurants in general?

I personally LOVE breakfast at O'hana...which is at the Polynesian Hotel and has characters Mickey, Pluto, Lilo and Stitch!

Re: Help me plan my Disney trip

I just went to disney world this past april. I have a 2 and 1 yr old.

Magic kingdom was the best bc the majority of the rides I can bring both kids on. And parked my stroller and brought my diaper bag on the ride.

I brought my dblestroller with me. If you are bringing a stroller put soemthing on it that sets it apart from all the others. I have a city mini GT dble. I sewed a huge batman symbol patch on it. Looked like a batmobile LOL I got so many compliments on it plus I can spot my stroller in a stoller parking lot!

You are going to have the best time! I cannot wait to go back!!!!!!!!!!!

Heard chef mickey is awesome. WE had a character breakfast at cape may since we stayed in the beach club resort. Plus we tried to get a reservation and it was all booked up so great that you got that!

Re: Help me plan my Disney trip

Try Aketshus easier to get than cinderellas castle and we enjoyed it more...the interaction was slightly better.

What about garden grill? We had the best character interaction there. We saw Mickey, chip and dale several times in one meal. They took pics the 1st time and signed our book. Then they came back 2more times and played peek a boo, danced, tickled them. One covered the girls eyes when we tried to get a photo. Very goofy with them. The girls said it is a must do again. Also nice to not have a buffet.

Disney Jr Show is great at HS. Princess Sofia is finally greeting too. Toy story mania and the muppet movie and honey I shrank the kids play area are great too. There are a few other things but it is my kids least favorite park, especially when the girls were younger. It offers a lot for older kids but less so for younger ones.

My girls like the parks in this order...MK, EPCOT, AK then HS.

Try to grab counter service at the new BOG. The girls loved the ballroom and the rose room.

Make sure to hit enchanted tales with belle. My girls were chip and the spoon/fork. If you are in the show you get a picture with belle and a bookmark. Our show she did go to two very shy kids but I have had friends who said if you didn't volunteer you don't get a picture. You just hold something and belle helped the little ones out. Great memory.

It will be important to read up on magic bands. It is new and will be in full force when you go. That might make for some big changes. Too new to know the full effect now.

Try easywdw.com. great blog site that is very helpful.

Renting a stroller is big help if you can get by at the airport without one.

You can rent swim vests at the boat dock. Free to rent just show your room pass and you get it for the week. Your kids can even wear them on the slide at the main pool. My girls loved the POR pool and slide. The parents all waited at the bottom and played catch.

Re: Help me plan my Disney trip

We were just there 2 weeks ago. My suggestions after going: take a day in between each park to relax at the hotel. It is too much to be at the park late each night and then try to be at another one for opening each day. Use those "off" days for doing the character meals, as long as they aren't in the parks. We spent way too much time at the character meals on park days, and hence, missed too much of the park. For the character meals, I recommend Chef Mickey (Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy); 1900 Park Fare (Cinderella, Prince Charming, stepsisters, and stepmother); Crystal Palace (Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore). We ate dinner at Hollywood & Vine, but there were no characters there; but we did get preferred seating for the nighttime show in the amphitheater.

My DD loved Hollywood Studios. In addition to the Disney Jr. show, there was a Toy Story ride that we went on about 5 times, plus tons of other stuff for her there. There were however, a few things that scared the bejesus out of her (she's 7)...the Studio Backlot Tour had what looked like a movie scene of a tanker on fire...too close and too hot for her comfort; and there is another ride that takes you on a tour of various famous movies (I don't remember the name of the ride), but there are real "actors", including your tour ride guide who participate in a gun fight; plus there is a fire scene in there too that can be scary for the little ones. After those two, she was too scared to watch the nighttime show, which included pyrotechnics, fireworks and lasers.

Animal Kingdom was great. DD LOVED Dino Land. She will tell you AK was her favorite park b/c she loved this area so much!

Magic Kingdom was my favorite. DD didn't love it as much as I did. It was VERY HOT the day we went (which won't be a problem for you!). And we spent too much time during the day going to Chef Mickey (11:00 reservation) and Crystal Palace. So we lost 6 hours out of the day in the park, and ended up not doing many of the things I think she would have loved. Plus, it made the day too herky-jerky for it to have seemed like a seamless day of fun. One piece of advice...if you do the Jungle Cruise there, do it during the day. We did it at night, and in the dark, it TERRIFIED her...the sounds and the darkness made the fake animals look more real, and I guess I would have been scared too if I were a little one! After that debacle, she was in no mood to be scared again by the sound of the fireworks, which began about 5 minutes after we got off the Jungle Cruise...not a happy ending to our day in the Happiest Place on Earth! LOLOL!!!!

Epcot...eh...I could take it or leave it. My suggestion, if you go, skip the countries. There really not much to entertain them there, IMO. I know ladies who will disagree with me, but I hated it! There is this "explorer" thing the kids can do...they get a cell phone and have to complete missions in each country. But unless you're willing to do the sh1t with them, forget it. If you're not standing in the EXACT correct location and position, it doesn't work, and you can't "skip" one and move on, and YOU won't be able to enjoy what you're looking at, browse, shop, etc because you'll be too busy trying to complete the "mission". I wanted to smash the darn phone into a million pieces by the time we got to the second country!

The above commentary is of course, just my opinions. I do want to go back soon, so I can let my girls experience what we missed the first time, and repeat what they did enjoy. What do they say...live and learn!

Re: Help me plan my Disney trip

I want to add and comment to what pharmcat had to.say...

See I agree and disagree with her on HS. I think 7+ even 6+ is good for that park bc they are .ore willing to.sit for show after show and are tall enough to do most of the rides which are 40 or more inches. But for younger kids with the exception of about 5 things there isn't as much. I knos on here many like HS and dislike EPCOT but IRL all our friends and people around my town that I speak with like them in the order we did.

My strong suggestion is to not pick parks on my or anyone's opinions. I think the key is to read the unofficial guide, watch with your kids youtube ride videos and see what appeals to you and your kids bc every family is differeng which is why disney is great bc it offers choices.

As far as EPCOT.IRL my friends kids love that park. The rides in future world and they enjoy parts of world showcase.world showcase is filled with disney princess meet and greets. My girls love the ride in mexico and haveto do it several times. They my younger one loved the Norway ride. My older DD has some motion issues and didn't like getting wet on rides so that was was not a hit. They loved meeting mulan in china. Loved the acrobats there and wanted to see them twice. My older one liked the movie and both girls liked seeing the terra votta soldiers. Not every kid will but my kids enjoy museums so I think that might be why they liked EPCOT. They also loved seeinv the drum show in Japan. They played drums in the small african section for quiet a while too. They liked the trains by Germany. They liked the belly dancer in morrocco. They wanted to see the movie in france and canada bug we ran out of time. I would not suggest dragging them to all the countries or to the shops. But they enjoy wandering and seeing what catches their eyes. Each country has a kidcot station where they can decorate a mask. Future world will have the most to do. Check out spaceship earth; finding nemo ride, turtle talk with crush and walk the living seas; my girls surprisingly loved living with the land; journey into your imagination and the play area after. The two innovations pavillions have some fun exhibits as well. There is an interactive water play area to run around in. The princesses are pretty much all there as well around world showcase...usually the only place to meet mulan.

As far as character meals. I agree with pharmcat. I always tell people do not do 2 in one day. I also do not recommend breakfast on a touring dsy unless you will be done before rope drop AND you and willing to get up that early. Most are not and you will lose valuable park touring time when lines will be short or nonexistant. I normally say do an early character dinner in the park then finish with rides or a parade or a character dinner out of the parks on a non park night. Lunches I only suggest for later when the parks get crowded this way you are ready for a break and can sit back and relax. I actually don't recommend 2sit downs on park days bc you lose too much park time unless you do not plan to take any break and then you use those as your sit down time.

Honestly character meals are ok but the nice thing is if you play it right you can see most favorites that way the avoid waiting in lines for those, then you only need to wait for the ones you didn't see. Saves time during busier times of the year. There are also character meals... and meals. I find the interaction at some very rushed and some more relaxed. Chef mickeys was always rushed everytime and loud crazy time. Whereas garden grill was more relaxed and the characters actually played with the kids. Crystal palace was loud but everytime we went the characters sat on the floor and spent a little time with the kids. Chef mickeys everytime it was like take apicture give a hug and maybe sign and move. Crystal palace didn't stay long but they did interact and we got 1-2 mins versus like 30 sec a character. Akershus they would hug, sign photo and then talk with the girls a little bit. Havs them curtsey or dance, slin. Ariel went into a huge thing about her starfish hairclip etc. Cinderellas castle felt more like a cattle call and rushed. Yes it was nice to eat in the castle but the characters had no personality. Cinderella downstairs was the highlight. She had my DD#2 dancing and had her curtsie etc. My older one she had a conversation with her that had her eyes bugging out in amazement. But upstairs they just signed posed and said jasmine said you are wearing my favorite color to my older girl who wore ariels human dress (as she calls it). Otherwise they were barely interacting with any of the tables and seemed very rushed. The girls said in the future they want to do Norway for a 3rd time but not the castle (also didn't help we waited 45 mins past our adr for the table). I have heard good things about tusker house over chef mickeys and 1900 park fair (different characters at dinner over breakfast). The dinner is a hit IF your children won't be scared of the step mother and sisters who really get into their role. My friend says they ask her son how many palaces he has. Hollywood and vind is a mixed bag. Friends who ate there say the food was the worst of the meals. We don't go bc they don't have characters my girls like. If it was little einsteins, princess sofia, izzy, and doc they might like it but they saidthey did not want to see Oso or handy manny and were eh on the others. But people I know with younger boys enjoy that one.

I think the key is reading reviews, looking at menus, etc.

My girls would not have liked staying out of the parks every other day but definitely work in quiet times. We stayed out one morning and didn't hit tge MK until one ouf last day. We plan some night outside the park. We tour those days until 2 or 3. Come back and swim and enjoy the resort. In January you won't want to sit around the resort that much as opposed to the really hot days. But unless you are going a holiday weekend that will be mobbed maybe plan midday breaks. Be there at rope drop, you will get much more in during the slow time that it will be easy to leave at lunch and rest at the hotel then go back around 4 have dinner and a few rides. You don't have to close the park or stay late to have fun. I try to plan a later night when we see the parade or fireworks that we don't get up early the next day. We would often leave the park around 8. When the girls were younger and still napped we
stayed later bc they would still get up early and nap later. But this past trip they didnt nap so they crashed earlier.

I think the key is finding the right balance for your family
bc what works for some does not for others. This trip we ended up canceling some adrs and eating at the resort bc the girls enjoyed it.

POR btw has a nice carriage ride you might like to plan for one night. I saw some girls dressing like princesses for it. My girls didn't dress but loved it.

We didn't see ANY of this! Could be because we were there in July and it was just too crowded for us. (I really don't do well in crowds...get very overwhelmed very easily, and I just shut down).

Crowds are definitely a problem. Some of the countries
are more fun than others. Some offer nothing much more but a restaurant and shops/drinks. That is why it is good to know what is offered so you can skip those...lol. see the girls liked the a cappella group in america but Madelyn didn't like the show but Kaitlyn did.

Mulan -china
Aurora france and Marie too
Jasmine and aladdin in morocco
Snow white by germany
Belle by france
Mary poppins, alice and pooh (forget if it is eyore or tigger) in britain
Duffy in the entrance to world showcase
Donald by mexico.
Mickey and friend in future world.

World showcase ones are not always out but rotate.

I highly recommend this app called character locator ( google play) by kenny the pirate. He lists every single character, what park, what restaurant etc they can be found and the times they can be found. Also tells you some questions or comments you can ask to get a reaction from the specific character.

I found trips were more fun when I planned a lot at home and then we could relax and enjoy there and be more spontanious than when we planned less before hand which made it more stressful bc it is not fun to try and figure things out down there when your kids decide they have to do x and you don't know where to find or the times don't line up.

We went in March. We did Magic Kingdom and Epcot. Ended with Chef Mickey's breakfast.
The past few years we've flown into Orlando, do 2 parks in Disney and then finish our vacation in Boca (we have family down there).
It's perfect for us.
I LOVE MK. Epcot was great too. My DS loved going to the different countries and getting his "Passbook" stamped.

Next year if we go, I'm hoping to do MK & HS OR HS & AK.
I love Magic Kingdom though. LOL To me, MK IS Disney. Chat Icon

It isn't that complicated. I borrowed the Unofficial Guide to Disney from the library for our first trip to Disney. We went with a 1yo and 3yo and spent only 3-4 hours per day at the park. We knew we were only seeing about 1/3 of the park or so but we were totally fine with that. We just followed the itinerary from that one book. It was really easy and we got to do so much in a short period of time.

We had so much fun that we went back in the same year and did everything we didn't the first time we went. We also went a different season and enjoyed all the holiday decorations.

We are now going on our 3rd Disney trip with a 2yo and 4yo. Our kids absolutely love Orlando. Everything is so kid friendy. The pools are great at the hotels. Surprisingly our kids ate real well unlike most all of our other vacations.

I think everyone has their own style of doing Disney. I know some people go at rope drop until closing to maximize their time at the parks. I have friends who vow never to go back because of the long lines and all day walking.

We enjoy the resorts, restaurants, downtown Disney, celebration area just as much as the actual parks so we don't mind not spending all day at the parks. I know many may think that we are wasting our tickets for only 3-4 hrs at a park per day.

Yes I was hoping they had a Disney for Dummies type book- or Disney for Lazy-ass parents type book! Chat Icon
I just have ZERO patience for all that kind of planning.
But like you- I don't need to spend 12 hours in a park. In fact 3-4 would be more than enough. I'd rather be more relaxed and less stressed. But thankfully we are going to wait a few years before making an attempt at this!
