How many cats do you have would be a factor.

I have one and it's fantastic. I love it. Seriously!!!

Re: Scoop Free Self-Cleaning litter box

My mom had one and all three of her cats refused to go in it because they saw it in action after they used it the one and only time and it scared them so they never used it again.

Is scoop free self-cleaning litter box a brand or are you asking about mechanical litter boxes in general? I have a litter robot and I absolutely love it. Not sure if that is something you were looking into. I will say one of my cats is a super slob and kicks out a ton of litter. However other than that, I got it because I was starting to slack on litter box duty and my cats started rebelling and peeing around the house. I switched to the litter robot and they always have a clean box. I use tidy cat for small spaces litter now and I can't tell you how awesome the combination is with this box.

I used to buy 2 boxes of swheat scoop almost every week because my two cats need a super clean box and my dog was eating the litter. I was spending like $25 a week on cat litter. I have tried several different boxes, one that you roll and flip to clean the box and a couple of different open top style boxes. Anyway so then I decide to try a litter robot. It said you could use it with swheat scoop but its not ideal. It didn't work very well at all. It did in the beginning but there was always nasty damp stuff stuck to the bottom of the globe. I had to was the globe out 2-3x a month. I was so fed up with it I decided to try clay litter and hope my dog didn't eat it. He hasn't thank the gods because this stuff is amazing. I buy one container of tidy cat for small spaces for $9 and it lasts me over 2 weeks. This litter and the litter robot work so well together I keep forgetting to empty the receptacle. The robot is in my kitchen and that room opens up to my living room. We spend a lot of time in these rooms and never smell the box! I was getting an error on the robot and I couldn't figure out why. It was because the entire receptacle was full to the top so the robot wouldn't cycle. And because it is always nice and fresh for the cats, they use it religiously.

The instructions tell you how to introduce it to your cat. You are supposed to leave both boxes next to each other. Keep the unit off but fill it with litter. If they do use it manually turn it on to clean it then shut it back off. At the same time, if they are still preferring to use their old box, don't clean that one and let it get gradually dirtier. If they start using the new box, take away the old one. If they do get freaked out, keep leaving it off and then turning it on to clean it until they are used to it. My cats took to it immediately and had no problems.

The only down side to the litter robot is that my messy cat kicks out tons of litter and that is a huge pain to sweep up. I also have a roomba robot so I turn that one and have it sweep the kitchen as well.
