What helped your child learn the alphabet?

Repetition. They sing the alphabet while pointing to the letters on the wall every single day at school. I then sing it with her numerous times after we get home.

This. DS LOVED letter factory. His preschool couldn't believe that he knew all letter sounds, and we owed it all to the leap frog video.

Re: What helped your child learn the alphabet?

That's funny so many other people love the Leap Frog Letter Factory. It's really great, DD LOVES it!! But honestly, I got her this video when she turned 2 and at that point she already knew her alphabet, it just reinforced it.

What REALLY helped her learn her letters in such a short amount of time was http://www.starfall.com/ AMAZING website! You can get it for free on your computer, but we paid the $3 fee to get it on our ipad so that she could press the buttons herself. It has each letter, their sounds, videos, songs etc, etc. So many other things though available if you pay the full price, but I forget how much that is. What you get for free or $3 is more than sufficient. She had a lot of fun with that. Was knowing her letters between 1.5 - 2 yrs old.

Re: What helped your child learn the alphabet?

Cheapest and easiest way....Get those foam letters from TARGET for the bathtub...I threw them all in there and as he played with them, I would just name the letters! He picked it up quickly. I Still leave them in there and now he likes to "spell" words.

Also, letter magnets on fridge

We put DD's initial up over her changing table around her first birthday and she quickly learned the letter C. That got her really interested in letters. She's 14 months and can pick out a few letters and repeat most of them pretty clearly. She has letter blocks, we sing the alphabet song all the time and now I stop and let her fill in a few of the letters. She also loves the dr. seuss abc book and repeats the letters when we read it. It's more fun than most alphabet books. I also just have her practice repeating the letters to me whenever, riding in a shopping cart or while she's swinging, etc.

What helped your child learn the alphabet?

The foam bathtub letters, Leap Frog letter factory toy, books, alphabet puzzles, and believe it or not, the TV show Super Why on Sprout. He loves it.

Re: What helped your child learn the alphabet?

first we worked with letter magnets and he watched super why. then we used fridge phonics which he loved. I would ask him to find the letter and he would pick it off the fridge and give it to me or just point to it. He also has the leap frog letter factory DVD but he knew his letters before then. Now he can identify all the letters and pick them out even if scrambled...BUT when he SINGS the alphabet he mixes it all up out of order. (he's got the tune though! and even says "now i know my...")

I just went to Creative child shop on sunrise in RVC yesterday and bought this stuff to start teaching him at home since I won't be enrolling him in preschool this september (he just turned 2 on monday)

the back of the posters is quartered with 4 different printables that can be photocopied and used as handouts to practice the subject on the front (ie: writing the alphabet, connecting a line from capital letter to corresponding lower case, etc)

My twins are still in the process of learning the alphabet, but they love this new app (Talking ABC). My DD says s ome if the letters and copies the animal sounds associated with the letter.

I am another vote for the Leapfrog Letter Factory DVD. It is on netflix. I found out about it here and it helped both of my kids learn their letters.
