Any Doctor Who Fans?

I know it's a long shot- Doctor Who is like the Nerd Mecca, but does anyone else watch?? Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who! It makes me sad. Chat Icon

Here's the article from IGN.

Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor, has announced plans to exit his role on the BBC's Doctor Who after four years on the show. Smith joined the show in 2010 and will depart following the upcoming, highly anticipated, 50th anniversary special and then the Christmas special in which he will be regenerated into what will become the 12th Doctor.

Here is what Smith had to say in a statement:

"Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt."

Smith began his journey with now beloved companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and has continued on in the second portion of season seven with Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman). Executive producer and head writer Steven Moffat will now begin the search for the next Doctor, who will have some sizable shoes to fill.

Here is what Moffat had to say about Smith's exit:

"Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him - sometimes literally - his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.

But great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt - bow ties were never cooler.

Of course, this isn't the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that's still so exciting!"

We will keep you updated as further details on the search for the new Doctor emerge. For now, sniff, and a fond farewell to number 11. You will be missed.

Any guesses on who will be the new doctor? I'd love to see Martin Freeman or Bill Nighy (especially since I know he's a HUGE Doctor Who fan and has wanted to be the Doctor since before the reboot!), but I have a feeling they'll go with someone unknown again.

DH is a longtime fan and he's gotten me into it too. I'm sad to see him go, I really liked Matt Smith in the role. I agree that I think they'll pick another unknown but Bill Nighy would be great! The wait is going to be torture.

Yep. (Obviously I am). I was uncertain about Clara Oswin Oswald when Amy and Rory Pond left but she grew on me. As sad as I will be to see him leave, I'm sure the replacement will be amazing.

Big ol' Whovian over here, and I am going to be reaaalllly sad to see Matt Smith go. Is it too much to hope that David Tennant or Christopher Eccleston will come back?? I know, I know, but a girl can dream can't she?

How perfect would it be if Benedict Cumberbatch was the new Doctor? Chat Icon

I personally would love to see the new doctor as a ginger! I mean...it's the one thing he's wanted for so long!

I was just reading an article today that was saying how the next doctor should be a woman...they were suggesting emma watson. I disagree. I mean, not that it couldn't happen but then you have to reconcile that with his marriage to river song and it could get very soap opera-ish. Plus...I love emma watson but i'm not sure if she's got that high level intelligent wit that the role of the doctor commands. I know she's smart...but I just don't see it, at all.

ETA: also, if they keep it within pattern the next doctor should be younger than matt smith, no?

YES! I had no idea there were so many Whovians here! Huzzah!

I REEEEEEEAAALLY don't like the idea of him as a woman... I just... the thing is he's always the same man- each actor portrays him so differently, but when it comes right down to it- he's still the same man. And I think he just wouldn't be able to be the same as a woman. I'd LOVE to see him ginger- I was actually thinking Rupert Grint (Ron from Harry Potter) would be a good pick!

He does seem to be getting younger as he goes along (I know Matt Smith was the youngest Doctor so far), but I don't know if they are doing that intentionally or it's just the way they've been casting so far.

That was the other one I was thinking- him or Martin Freeman. Two totally different types of guys but I could see either of them being the Doctor!

David Tennant will ALWAYS be my favorite Doctor- they'll be hard pressed to find someone I love more than him!

It's true- I'm always eh about the new characters at first. I hated Donna Noble with a passion. And then I loved her... and then she forgot everything. lol!

I agree. I just don't think having a female doctor is necessary. It's not like the show has a shortage of kick ass female characters anyway. If it ain't broke...

Re: Any Doctor Who Fans?

I love Doctor Who. I have zero desire to see a woman doctor and as much as I love Cumberbatch, I think that casting him would start to really establish a 'type' - Matt Smith and David Tennant were a bit similar in my eyes (although they played the Doctor differently and aren't 'twins').

I'd like to see Hugh Laurie step in. I know THAT is a long shot.. but it's my fantasy. :)

Re: Any Doctor Who Fans?

Another Dr. Who fan here as well. There is an entire subreddit on reddit for Dr. Who that has lots of wonderful discussions and art for those that are interested. My number one Dr. is David Tenant. I have heard rumors that Rupert Grint (from HP) is up for it, but I would love to see Daniel Radcliff try to tackle the role. I think he has the look.

I agree! Hugh laurie is perfect. He has that quick wit, intelligence and also the doctor often shows these moments of a sense of superiority... he KNOWS he's more powerful and smarter than humans and after seeing hugh laurie do house for so long I KNOW he can play that role!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon There is so much awesome in that! Is that the Catherine Tate Show? I would love to watch it- I hear it's hysterical. That was great. And I loved hearing David Tennant with his full on Scottish accent!

I read somewhere that Moffat specifically named the Ood because double oo's are hard to say with David's Scottish accent. They just wanted to mess with him. Chat Icon I love it!

I guess I could see that. I never really watched House- just bits and pieces there. He reminds me a bit of a less refined Cumberbatch. Chat Icon

I still would love Rupert Grint or Martin Freeman though! They'd get my votes!

I used to be a huge fan, but I did not like Matt Smith one bit and the loss of Russell T. Davies as writer really turned me off. I loved Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. I always wonder if some of the British actors who do cameos translated to the US.

This is a clip from red nose day (its a sort of telethon on the bbc for Comic Relief) few years ago, but Lauren Cooper is a character from the Catherine Tate snow

There was a brilliant Doctor Who/ Call the Midwife sketch at this years comic relief but I can't find a good version to link to.
