Godfather responsibilities
What is the god father responsible for at the christening? Dh was asked to be godfather for his friends Dc and the christening is soon. I am a Jew so am obviously no help. Just don't want to do the wrong thing because this is a friend that is very close to dh!!! It will all be on me because dh has a lack of etiquette skills lol.

there should be a meeting at the church beforehand with the parents and god parents to go over the ceremony.
at least this is what my church does

The only thing my child's godfather is responsible for is buying the cross. Godmother buys the outfit but every family is different so I would just ask the parents.

Buying the cross and just being at the house beforehand to help the godmother dress the child. My DS godfather bought him the cross and then came before church to help my sister (DS godmother) get him dressed.

This is what I thought. I'm not close enough with the wife to really ask and dh would never.
I really think one of you has to ask them. Though its customary to purchase the cross, they may do something different in their family. I would probably just call the wife myself and say something like, "I just wanted to check in with you. DH isn't exactly sure what he needs to get for the Christening, and since I'm Jewish, I'm of no help." But say it very lighthearted. I'm sure she'll be forthcoming with their expectations.

Send a text from dh's phone to the bf if you are uncomfortable calling. Every family is different so its better to ask then step on toes.

my brother is DD's godfather. He bought her cross for her and came over early the morning of her christening to help dress her and take pictures with DD's godmother.
ETA - DD's godmother is young(er) 24. This was her first real dealing with a christening (or, being a GM) so we had to talk to her about what was 'customery' and there was no problem! She purchased DD her gown, even passed down her cross from when she was christened

Same here.... it is nice if he offers to buy the cross, but for us it wasn't expected (in fact, my sister, the godmother ended up getting both the cross and the outfit!)

I would ask. Every family is different and has different expectations.
I didn't expect anything from either godparent on her christening day but, I do expect them to be a part of her life forever and to make an effort to have a good realtionship with her.
But Im godmother to my bf's child and I was expected to buy the cross.

I think it's cultural. In my family, only the mother is allowed to get a cross for the child.
That said, DS's godfather got him a chain and a saint's medal. We also made him give the toast at the reception (that's mostly because neither DH nor I like to and he does a great "Godfather" impersonation)
During the ceremony, I believe he is the one who brings "the light of Christ" (the lit candle) to the baby. He also answers the questions for the child along with the godmother and the parents.

For both my kids the godfather gave the donation to the church the day of the christening...so i would ask sometimes they have different thoughts on this.
