TIA! Chat Icon
I think my OB has rights to deliver here as well and after my experience in labor and delivery a couple of weeks ago at the hospital I planned to deliver at, am seriously considering possibly switching...
Specifically wondering about what level NICU, your experience there, as well as regular specs. Thanks!

My son wasn't in the NICU so I don't have any information there.

I delivered my son there in 2011 and cannot say enough good things about my experience there. Every nurse I had was wonderful and helpful. One of the nurses stayed with me an hour and a half in the middle of the night working with me to get DS to latch. They were happy to answer any question DH and I had.

Any other questions, feel free to FM me, but I recommend Southside to everyone. Good luck!

I had DD at Southside in September. She wasn't in the NICU, so I can't comment about that but I was very happy overall with my experience. If you have any specific questions, feel free to FM me! Also, they do tours every Saturday at 9 am, and you don't need an appointment if you're interested in checking it out for yourself.

Re: What do you know about South Side hospital?

I delivered my baby 1 month early at south side, she was in the nicu 7 days. I thought they were outstanding from the minute I walked in until the day I took the baby home. Every nurse was fantastic and knowledgable, I was told everything that was going to happen before it/as it was happening. The nicu staff was wonderful. Baby was in there because she was 1 month early and for high bilirubin counts. It really felt like my husband and I got a crash course in parenting from the staff of the nicu. From feeding to bathing, to things to do when the baby was home they sat and discussed everything with us it was great (we went to every feeding between 8 am and 12 pm after I was discharged from the hospital so it was our home away from home) even when i went home for the night i would sometimes call in the middle of the night and they would give me a full update on everything. The nurses up on the maternity floor were just as helpful. Obviously no complaints from me! I was also a little nervous to deliver there because for some reason this hospital has a bad rap, yet everyone I talk to that has actually delivered there vs "heard about delivering there" have had nothing but wonderful things to say.

Re: What do you know about South Side hospital?

Thanks ladies! My SIL delivered my nephew there 9 years ago and though her experience was fine I hadn't heard great things about it (though nothing specific). But one of my drs sono techs mentioned my going there instead. I guess the biggest thing ls are obviously their nicu as w twins there's a good chance one or both could end up in there as well as of both my OB and Perinatologist have rights there...
I also know its not fair of me to heap my feelings toward the original hospital i was planning to deliver at to every department in the hospital as i only dealt with 2 nurses and 4 residents over the course of 2 days (9:30 sat night to 2:00 sun afternoon).... And I have so many friends who have delivered there as well as had their kids in the nicu and had great experiences...

I delivered in Southside and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the entire L&D and maternity floors. Especially when I went in for contractions early, they were very kind and underating of my neurotic tendencies. They even called in an order to a local diner for me.

My sister and SIL both had babies in the NICU and they just adored all of the nurses in there. They both had to leave them there for about a week and had no issues with anyone there.

Re: What do you know about South Side hospital?

Had DD at Southside and LOVED it. Can't say enough good about the care there from the L and D staff to the maternity ward nurses. All so nice and accommodating
DD wasn't in NICU so I can't speak to that.
You do have to pay if you want a private room. I did and it was the best money I ever spent
I would go back there if i was having another in a heartbeat!

Re: What do you know about South Side hospital?

I had DS there...no NICU experience....in 2008 and was very happy. DH and I paid for the private room and the nurses were great about showing us the swaddle and calming DS when he was screaming his head off in the middle of the night when we chose to have him room in. The lactation nurse was great and the delivery nurse worked well past her shift to stay with me until I delivered my DS.

A friend of mine recently took the tour and was not happy with the nurse who gave it's attitude and lack of information when she asked questions. This friend is a very detail oriented person and she is a planned C-section so she had particular interests in certain procedures. Though I told her my experience was great and I plan to deliver there again this July she chose to switch OB's and deliver at Stony Brook instead.

I am going to take the tour again soon since I have heard things have changed there in the past 5 years, for the better, but everyone I know who is asked about South Side, and has had personal experience, has nothing but good things to say despite the negative reputation they can't seem to shake.

Re: What do you know about South Side hospital?

I believe a lot of the bad rap came from before it was taken over by Northshore/LIJ. It is now considered a great hospital for not only maternity but for med/surgical as well.

I don't have any experience with Southside. I am currently 34 weeks with twins and my OB delivers at both Southside and Good Sam. I chose Good Sam because it is a level 3 NICU and Southside is a level 2. This may help you decide

Thank you! I just found out my Perinatologist doesn't have rights at south side, so I may not really have a choice anyway. My OB does but not my peri, so I want to talk to him & see what he says... I'm sure if anything it'll depend on when I deliver but since he treats me too I may have to stick with one he has rights at. Thanks again! Chat Icon
