Stuttering
This is a weird one, so please bear with me - I'll try to make it short
DS is 3 & does the normal stuttering that you expect at that age (when he's too excited or distracted, etc.) - I'm not concerned about that. What's weird is that we recently noticed that he is seriously stuttering with one phrase ("remote control"). He can say each word on its own quickly, clearly & without hesitation, but when he puts them together he cannot get the first word out & he gets hung up on the first syllable & slurs, stutters & repeats it.
It's been going on for a few weeks now & he's big into RC cars, so we notice it all day every day. Has anyone had this happen before? Is it another weird, but age-appropriate type thing?
My dh had a stuttering issue when he was young & received speech therapy for it. He still occasionally gets stuck, but has it so under control that you wouldn't even notice unless you know that he has an issue. Is stuttering hereditary? I think not knowing is why I'm probably noticing this more...Thanks!

Re: Stuttering
I would guess it's normal. We went through a stuttering phase with my daughter when she just turned 3 over the summer. It was severe, had us all completely freaked out, and went away after a month. Every now and then she'll have a few days of stuttering but it quickly passes. I usually notice it comes on during a time where she's putting together more complex thoughts and language, so pay attention to that.
Who knows why they stutter and on what words/combos, it's still largely a mystery and a guessing game we have to piece together. I have started to relax now when she does it and chalk it up to something that has to give, momentarily, to make room for new growth. Then, when she's ready, she puts it all back together again - the old skills that have taken a back seat, and they new skills.
Good luck. I know what a terrible feeling it is, and also had a stuttering experience myself similar to your husband's.

Re: Stuttering
my son is 2.5 and recently started with "excited stuttering" and not being able to get certain words out. He will then repeat the sentence over and over again from the beginning until he gets the word out.
I spoke with our ped about it at his 2.5 year well visit. She said it is totally normal. Not only are their brains working harder and faster than they can get the words out but some compound sounds are just tough at this age.
She said not to draw attention but rather ask him to "whisper" whatever he is trying to say. This way, he focuses on the whisper and slows down and it works!
Give it a shot

Re: Stuttering
I think it's pretty normal, their minds are working faster than their mouths. I can see the wheels turning in DS's head when he repeats the same word over and over until he can finish the sentence. We just patiently wait for him to finish and answer so that we don't bring attention to it.
I would just wait it out and see if he corrects it on his own.

Re: Stuttering
Thanks everyone
He's been doing that excited stuttering that all kids do for a while now, but I don't count that since I know it's normal & it's very common. This is different...it's hard to describe, but you can actually see it in his face that he's physically struggling to get the word out.

Kelly, thank you so much for sharing this/your experience. It makes a lot of sense to me & I will definitely pay attention to that!
DH & I had originally noticed it together, but didn't really talk about it. Last night I asked him to tell me more about his stutter & he said that there's one phrase that always gets him too! He can also say the words fine on their own, but put them together and he struggles. I never knew that! I also learned that boys are more likely to stutter and that it can be hereditary, so we've decided to pay better attention now to see if it's a one-phrase and/or temporary deal or if it's the start of a bigger issue.
Thanks again everyone!
