Looking for open minded advice regarding flu and hep-a vaccine- stressed!

I am supposed to bring my 3 year old daughter for the flu shot and hepatitis a vaccine tomorrow and its stressing me out. I got her the flu vaccine at 1 but not last year. She's in pre-school now which is leaving me on the fence. I don't get the flu shot myself and never have.

The Hep-A shot I guess is an "optional" vaccine. I don't really know how necessary it is . . .

Any input on these would be greatly appreciated-

I do not believe in giving LO's Hep A. Flu, I think is worth it, although there is no guarantee she wont get the flu because they basically look at what flus have been predominant in other areas and form the vaccine based on that. Thats a tough one. I have never gotten it and not given it to my kids either, but now that they are in preschool, I am thinking about it

I never get the flu shot for myself either.
NEVER EVER have
But for my DD I do get it each year because she is in daycare which is just a huge petri dish of germs.
ANd I hear flu in young children and babies can be serious.

Hep A I don't recall if we got or not- so I can't help you there.

What are your reservations for not vaccinating? That should guide your decision. We are not vaccinating for the flu. My children did not receive hep a either.

I don't really have reservations per say. I just never got vaccines myself growing up unless they were mandatory. The optional things such as flu I never got so I guess I just am stuck on my decision because I've been fine "knock on wood" and don't know how I feel about exposing my daughter to things unnecessarily. I am concerned about her fear of going to the dr. since she loves it now and hasn't had a vaccination since 2. I am worried about any reactions.

Both of my kids are in daycare and get the flu vaccines. I look at the benefits of vaccine vs the risks of getting the flu itself (although I know it doesn't protect against all flus).

There have been a million things circling around daycare already, and it's only October... I know they are getting sick this week because I'm busy at work and my parents and ILs are away LOL (I'm surprised I haven't gotten a call yet because they usually tend to get sick while ILs are on the plane to their destination...)

I agree with PP. Think about what your reservations are. What is causing you stress? Reaction? Did she have one the first time? If not, then be at peace with the flu shot. If you believe the flu shot is worth it to you and your child’s health then get it.

HepA: I’m not sure its required in NY. It is here in TX. Like it or not, AJ got it. It has a very very very low reaction. I think the most you get is a red spot, soreness and that’s it. Since I had no choice but to give it to her, I have to say it was the least of my issues.

I’m not anti-vaccine but very much against tons of vaccines in my kid at once. I am also not a fan of the flu shot as I see it to be utterly useless and over-done. So much that I believe it’s probably the cause of most of our issues with the flu and a contributor to super bugs.

All that said, I think you SHOULD give both at the same time. HepA is not a ‘biggie’ and the flu as I said, if she had no reactions last time, go ahead. It will make you feel better when all the sneezing and coughing starts.

Looking for open minded advice regarding flu and hep-a vaccine- stressed!

DS has had no reaction to either the flu shot (this year or last year) or the hep A shot that he had at 21 months. I gave the flu shot because he was a preemie and wanted him to be as protected as he could be. He is in a class a few days a week and we do other things so I felt it was a good precaution to take. The hep A shot I gave because getting it cam cause dehydration amd other issues. With him being in class I again felt it wad a good precaution to take.

I guess I really just don't want her to get sick from the flu shot and hate this being "my choice."

"They say" you can't get sick from it, but IMO, while you may not get sick with the strains of flu that are included in the shot there is always a chance that you can still get the flu.

It is a hard choice, but after looking at all the pros and cons you will make the right decision for you and your family.

Re: Looking for open minded advice regarding flu and hep-a vaccine- stressed!

. MY dd got the flu shot when she was 1 and ended up getting the flu anyway, but it was VERY mild...I shudder to think what it could have been like had she not had the vaccine...

I get her the shot every year, I am so nervous of her getting very sick from the flu.
