Anyone NOT have a safety gate on their stairs?

DD is 14 months & hasn't really gone near the main staircase until now.
We have one at the top of it, going down, but not going up.
The way it set up, we would have to get one of those wrap around gates (I don't know if that's what it's called but the ones that go around the area) because the window is across from the banister post.
Has anyone just not bothered to get a gate & just made sure DC never went up it?
I keep thinking I'll just watch her but I dont want to be stupid & have an accident.

Because of the way our banister is in thickness & design we just got a cheap wood one & I tied it to the banister. It did the trick & they never bothered with it cause they couldn't get past it, yet I could step right over it.

I would just worry too much about her somehow ending up at the top of the stairs and falling down. Kids have a way of getting places even if you are vigilant about trying to keep them away. I've had a gate at both the top and bottom of my stairs since my DS was cruising and we still have it up 3 years later now for DD. IMO, I'd get a gate, you don't want to kick yourself if (God forbid) something happened, kwim?

we have not put a gate at the bottom of my stairs- but i have a high ranch so we are mostly upstairs and the toys downstairs are usually engough of a distraction - but i will also allow them to climb the stairs when they want to - my twin boys are 14 months and i have a 3 year old

when my 3 year old was 1 - he never went by the stairs and if he wanted to go down he raised his hands for help so we never closed the gate at the top - it all matters on your kids - one of my twins wants to go down the stairs- so it is closed now

DS is almost 12 months and until about a week ago, couldn't climb the stairs by himself.
He was on the floor a few nights ago and all of a sudden, he was 5 steps up and i went running over and caught him just as he slipped off the step.

So, we now have a gate at the bottom of the stairs.

We don't have one at the top yet because we're still trying to find one that will fit there (we have a very awkward area to use and have to do something custom)
When we're upstairs with him, we don't let him out of our sight for a second.

I'm actually hoping that this weekend when my Dad is visiting he can help us rig something up for the top of the stairs

i dont' want to take any chances!

Re: Anyone NOT have a safety gate on their stairs?

We don't right now, DD is 1 and has been climbing for a few weeks now. The stairs are a little out of the way so I know when she is heading there. The way our stairway is, we don't have a bannister on the bottom 4-5 steps so it's tough to get a gate that works. I really should find something because this child is nuts. With DS we had one of those super playard gates that worked ok, but I know DD would push right past that lol. And nothing on the top of the stairs. If she is upstairs I am with her and she is in her crib. I may end up getting one soon though so she can play up there with DS.

We never put one at the top of the stairs. We had one at the bottom, but it was usually open. I mainly closed it if DH was downstairs with DS and I was doing something upstairs like ironing and didn't want him in the area.

Anyone NOT have a safety gate on their stairs?

We didn't until about 2 weeks ago because I found 14 month old DD playing upstairs in my bedroom while I was cutting her dinner. She left my sight for maybe 3 minutes. She never really had an interest in the stairs. Thank God she didn't fall backwards, get the gate

when ds was in our room, gate went on door.... when ds was in his own room, gate when near top of stairs in hallway..

before ds was steady going up the stairs we use to have a gate at the bottom we'd put up when needed.

We don't and never have. I just taught the kids to stay away from the stairs. If they wanted to go down or up, they were told to stand near the railing and not the opening and call for me.

DS is 10 months and loves to climb the stairs, so we bought these really cheapy wood ones that we can climb right over.

Get the gate! I always worry, what if you're home alone with your DC and you fall or get sick? You can lose sight of them for 30 seconds and they can get halfway up and fall backwards and hit their heads badly.
A cheap $20 gate is well worth it.
