Re: Random ?: Home birth

I ended up in a C Section because I simply didn't progress with baby #1.
Baby #2 I was in the hospital for a while on bed rest and she was born 7 weeks early due to complications.

For me, I'd feel more comfortable at the hospital, simply because if you (or your child) need emergency care, it's right there.

As moms-to-be our number one priority should be the health and well being of our babies. That being said, I think if you chose a home birth over a hospital birth you are putting your own needs ahead of your childs.

But to each his own I guess.

I respect that a home birth isn't for you but that 1st statement is uncalled for. You are suggesting to have a home birth is selfish and neglectful. It is none of those things. I think that birth is no exception t the saying knowledge is power. Are there horrible things that can happen? Yes, but if you look at the research and all the data from say your ob's office and the home birth midwife you choose you may be surprised to see that in most cases, not all, more intervention is "needed" in a hospital birth. Women have been having babies forever, and it is actually in our "recent" history we went to a hospital, and in fact a lot of women in other countries do home birth with midwives. I believe Denmark was ranked #1 for mother and baby health and guess what over half of those babies are born at home with midwives. Also there are a few women on here who have delivered to quick to make it to a hospital and they did just fine.

My point is....it's not for everyone and you have to do your research, but it can be a safe wonderful experience. I would just make sure you have an ob that knows the plan incase you go in, and you can do that. It's not like you can't change your mind or go if the midwife sees a complication.

Re: Random ?: Home birth

I think the problem is hospitals need better ( & more) birthing options. All should have birthing pools. NUMC has a birthing tub , i was sold on my midwife with the promise i could have a waterbirth then she changed her tune 1/2 way during my pregnancy saying VBACs are not allowed to have water birth. I felt conned. She promised all these other birthing options and in the end i was treated like a animal at NUMC. They told me if i literally moved my body that i would be wheeled into OR. The ONLY thing i wanted to do so bad was stand up or walk around during labour but that was forbidden. My midwife barely checked on me so i had a bunch of random Dr.s sticking their hands inside of me and i ended up with an infection due to that (I went from 4cm to cervix swollen closed, which is like WTF ) They wanted to convinced me my daughter was 12-13 lbs ( she was 8lbs) so they could force a c-section so they wheeled me in a wheel chair outside of the ultrasound room, left alone for 2 hours in a abandon hallway in active labour, my water breaking even more so flooding the floor, me screaming for help for god knows how long to the point where a patient had to get me help to bring me back to the maternity ward. It was a VERY inhumane neglectful experience so alot of woman end up very traumatized, even PTSD after c-sections and the only way to get over it is to do the opposite.Thats not even talking about horrible physical recoveries in the aftermath. I lost all trust in Dr.s and even midwifes that work in hospitals. Even though i have no choice but to try a VBAC again in a hospital , all i can do is hope my new Dr. doesnt try to make me crave into the pressure of a c-section when the time comes and if he does, me and my husband already decided- I'll walk out & have the baby in the car in the hospital parking lot LOLChat Icon

I find this shocking!! I had such a different experience there. I used Gaia Midwives and Susan didn't leave my side the whole time!! However, there was a midwife there from a different practice who went home to sleep during labors. I overheard the midwives sounding shocked about this. They said, "I guess that is how she handles such a high caseload". In the end, I had a very very long induction due to pre-e. The midwives asked for a section but, the attending doctor came in and said "no way!". he alterted the plan and the next nightI had my baby pain med free.

I will say that there were issues with how my DC was responding to pitocin. There was talk that the baby was having "lates" after each contraction (A dip in the heartbeat, I think). The doctor would look at it and say it wasn't a true a late. They would up the pit. The minute he left the room, the nurse would say that she wasn't risking her license and lower it. This went on like 10 times before I burst into tears. It was very un-nerving. My midwives and I were pissed at the nurses. They wouldn't speak up to the doctor with thier opinion but, then didn't listen to the doctors orders. Crazy.

In the end, Pitocin didn't work for us and we used other methods of induction. I felt like NUMC was VERY dedicated to lowering the section rates (at least my midwives and the doctor were.. not so much the nurses).

I may totally get flamed for this.. but it is my honest opinion..

God forbid there is an unforeseen complication and something happened to my baby (and it DOES happen).. I could NEVER forgive myself. Just because I didn't want to give birth in a hospital? It's definitely not a risk I would ever be willing to take.

But to each his own I guess.

Sounds like you need to do some reading on the topic before jumping to such conclusions.

Don't be so defensive. It's my opinion. You made your choice and it worked out for you. Great. It wouldn't work for me. No need to be presumptuous and assume I haven't looked into the topic.

Exactly, you are 100% judging based on you OPINION. Show us the facts before you judge. That's like me coming here and saying that if you have a baby in a hospital (for all the reasons I did NOT choose a hospital birth) that you are putting yourself first, or women who get epidurals are putting themselves 1st. I would NEVER say that.

That def sounds like my midwife- she is a one person practice and takes on more patients then she can handle ( and has no patience!) The nurse were very unsupportive and annoyed with me trying for a VBAC. 2 of the doctors were supportive and the other 2 who had more of a upper hand were not. My water was broken for nearly 24 hrs and the midwife ( who just told me my cervix was swollen shut) wanted me to wait another 24 hrs so a Dr. she is friendly with can sneek Pitocin which is a bad no-no with VBACs so i knew this chick was batshit crazy and that point anything else would endanger my daughter so i threw in the towel. I heard good things about Gaia but i had to go with what my insurance covered.

I used a MW at NUMC in 2002. I wonder if it's her. My experience wasn't horrible, but def. led me to have the HB the 2nd time around.

Random ?: Home birth

nah.. makes no sense to me. The house she would have been born in - I didn't own, she wouldn't grow up with and I couldn't give to her. This house I own now still, wouldn't do it. It just doesn't mean what it used to.

My father and all his siblings were born at home and my grandpa did all their birth certificates. Neat, but old fashioned. Sorry JMHO

Aside from anecdotal evidence, I find it hard to believe you've truly looked into it. Huge studies have shown that home birth in low risk mothers have identical outcomes to women who birth in a hospital. It's one thing to voice an opinion, it is another to suggest that someone is a neglectful mother for choosing something different from you. By your logic, every woman should have a c-section in the 39th week, safer for baby.

This is true. There are tons of studies that show the safety of home births. I would consider it but dh would freak out!

DH works with a lot of medical malpractice and knows way too much about 'bad baby cases'. Knowing what he knows and seeing what he's seen, he would never allow it. He wouldn't even consider letting me be seen by a midwife.

I'm sure a lot of the time home births go very smoothly but when things go wrong during birth they can go VERY wrong VERY quickly. I know people say "Oh, if things get bad we'll go to the hospital". When you're talking about a baby being deprived of oxygen, that quick trip to the hospital could have detrimental consequences. I don't care how low risk I am, I could just never justify the risk. I want the OR down the hall, not down the road (or further) God forbid anything turns south.

I love the thought of it but I'm just NOT there. I want to try a birthing center for baby #2....I had an unmedicated birth at a hospital and LOVED the experience but left early because I HATED the hospital lol. They kept treating me like I was sick or something. I also hate that they took the baby away for a few hours (for tests ect) before bringing him back.

No thanks. Hopefully next pregnancy is without complications and we can birth at a center.

I have researched this and home births do pose risks that would not otherwise be present in a hospital. Many advocates of home births will not talk about the dangers. Because women get flamed for talking against home births, many of the baby deaths and injuries that have occurred are not publicized.

I think a less medical birth would be great. For me, I couldn't consider it, I was too afraid of complications. My younger sister was born after a completely non-eventful, low risk, perfect pregnancy with her cord wrapped around her neck. She currently has a mild case of cerebral palsy, but every dr that has ever seen her has said that the difference between her mild disability and being confined to a wheelchair for her entire life was a matter of seconds longer without sufficient oxygen.

That said, I think many people have babies at home without incident.

I wouldn't be a good candidate for it, but even if I were low risk, I'd never have a home birth. I'd be too nervous about the risks. Even if a pregnancy and labor went smoothly, things could always go downhill quickly. I'd rather be at a hospital just in case extra intervention was needed.

I personally wouldn't do it but know two who have and had no issues. Saved a ton of money on bills and the babies were healthy and fine. I honestly wish they had birthing centers that focus on the mother and birthing the child instead of hospitals.

I wouldn't do it because I'd want to be at the Hospital in the case that there is an emergency. I would also personally be more comfortable with an OB over a midwife.

It's too much risk being away from the Hospital, for me anyway. I'd never forgive myself if something went wrong that could have been prevented if I gave birth in a Hospital.

That being said, a friend of mine recently gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in a pool in her living room and said she wouldn't have changed a thing. She went into shock because she was bleeding so bad and ended up being taken to the hospital via ambulance while her husband followed with the newborn- and they all spent the day in the hospital anyway- but she still say it was worth it for her.

This is not something I understand at ALL -

I can understand why someone would want to go drug free ......but I can not understand the appeal or reason to do something like give birth to another human being and NOT have the best medical opprotunities available to you RIGHT THERE .........I would be TERRIFIED and a total and complete nervous wreck if I had to go through childbirth anywhere but a hospital.

But that's me - I much prefer the white coats and the fancy MD degrees to the midwives and the whole 'natural, trust my body' thing - I'm admitedly not very 'in tune' with my body.

Ds1 would probably be dead if I did a home birth and I had a run of the mill perfect pregnancy. For me I saw how quickly and seriously things can change during delivery (cord compression in our case).

That's why I like hospital-based midwives. You get all the security of having a baby in a hospital, but a better shot of being able to go naturally.

Random ?: Home birth

i had one of the worst births imaginable with DD. i would home birth in a second if i thought i would have support of my husband and could find a midwife with lots of experience.

unfortunately i will most likely be high risk for future pregnancies. even if i am not i will hopefully be a vbac candidate, and i from the research i have done it will be difficult if not impossible to find someone to accommodate my needs. i almost wish i could be with a peri and an OB through my pregnancy, but get delivered by a midwife at home..

i have done a TON of research on this topic and home birth under the right circumstances can be very low risk. we are conditioned by society to believe that birth is a medical issue, when it is really sometng totally natural. obviously woman have been birthing babies way longer than hospitals have been there. and yes i agree that stillborn and maternal fetal deaths have dropped since hospitals have been in play - even those studies are skewed by the way the data was collected. im not saying hospitals are bad - me and my daughter wouldnt be here today without it, but i just think there is so much politics regarding the topic that woman are made to think home birth is "crazy" when it really can be a quite natural, normal, and spiritual experience.

for those interested definitely read spiritual midwifery by ina may gaskin or baby catcher by peggy vincent.

You have to accept 19th century outcomes if you are going to use the techniques.

Lots of women and their babies used to die during childbirth. Not to mention bad babies that were left to die prior to neonatal ICU care.

There are lawsuits in the home birth situation. Problem is, you won't get much if you sue a midwife... And the ob at the hospital isn't responsible if you are not there. Of course, one won't read this on a home birth website.

Random ?: Home birth

A friend of mine did an at home water birth and the baby has brain damage. They don't know if they had her in the hospital if something could have been done, but I feel like why take any chances. If god forbid anything went wrong I would want to be in a hospital, we are dealing with someones life here.
