Daycare and violations?

Is it possible/realistic to find a daycare with absolutely no violations? Every single one that family & friends have recommended have violations, but they are all corrected.

Part of me feels like if they did have a violation and corrected it, they may be more diligent about that area of care?

I think they all have some to some extent- what I look for is

1- what KIND of violation are we talking about?
2- have they corrected it?

If it's something small like- roof is leaking, etc, then it wouldn't bother me as much as something regarding lack of supervision of children or some gross safety hazard, kwim?

i agree with the PP. when i was looking through the violations almost every single facility had one or another. it was almost impossible to find one that didn't.

I would say that it is not the norm to not have at least a violation during a visit. You should be more concerned with whether or not they are repeat violations which would indicate a systemic problem or whether or not they are corrected or not. Depending on the violation area, would make me be concerned or not.

I was a licensed provider and I will tell you it's almost next to impossible not to have violations. For example we were violated because when the licensor showed up the roll of paper towels in the bathroom had run out. we had not even realized it. So we were violated for a health and safety violation. Our correction was to put another roll in the bathroom. So I would really look at what the violation is because the licensors are looking for stuff to find when they show up. Obviously any real safety violations is what I would be concerned with.

Mine doesn't have any within the last 24 months. That's all the NYS website shows. But like the others said, def look at each specific violation and determine if it's really something important. Some of the things can be silly IMO. And if there's one violation in 24 months that's not serious, I'd be ok with that. If there are repeated violations, uncorrected violations, or serious ones, then I'd keep looking.

My daycare does not have any. They have only been open since Feb though. I figure all will have some violations over time but it is more about what the violations are for.

When looking on the State website you see the violations and the section of the rules it violates but you have to really ask for info because somthign may fall into that section but not be as horrible as the section makes it sound. Minor violations I would have no problem with if they were promptly corrected. Repeated violations No I would not overlook.

I'd be more concerned with the kind of violation. We were going to send DD to a site that had one on their record, but the state cited them for not submitting their menus on time I don't care if they serve mac and cheese instead of chicken nuggets, lol. Things like not doing background checks on employees, leaving babies unattended, or going over teacher-student ratios are much bigger problems.

Thank you so much ladies! I am having such a hard time with this. The one we are leaning towards just had their annual inspection on May 25, 2012 and most things seem minor but there was one about a provider not being able to see a child at all times? Everything has been corrected, so I assume that means the state went back after the 25th and reinspected those areas??

I used to work in a center and I've been through visitations.
The state goes as far as checking garbage pail covers. (the cleanliness).
I don't remember any violations at the center I worked for, but, I know the state looks for a lot.
When you see "corrected", I'm almost positive the site was revisited.

For the one you saw (seeing kids at all times), maybe, there was a piece of furniture in the way or something like that.
It may have came down to rearranging the classroom furniture/areas.

actually the daycare i sent my son too had no violations and it was one the things i liked about them - it was in melville- calling all kids again

My daughters daycare does not have any. With that being said, I would send her somewhere where they may have violation but it would depend on what it was.

to me its not so much of actual violations but WHAT the violations are........ some of them seem way more serious.....

I've seen daycare with no violations(it does exist), yet know the inspector just wasn't there to witness the behaviors.

Depends on the violation and if it has been corrected. Don't they have a certain amount of days to correct?
